Apple iPad 2 global launch starts in Australia, New Zealand

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 08:30 AM PDT

Today marks the first day of Apple's international iPad 2 launch, starting with Australia and New Zealand, where massive lines of consumers waited to get their hands on the coveted tablet. It would seem that the process of purchasing an Apple product has become almost as exciting, if not equally so, as owning one. In fact, we recently saw one American consumer walk away from Apple's 5th Ave. flagship location with $900 for her spot in line, and no iPad to show for it. "Ninety percent of the reason I came is for the experience, 10 percent for the product," said Alex Lee, 27, as he stood in line at an Apple store in Sydney. In response to supply issues here in the States, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said on Tuesday that Apple is "working hard to build enough iPads for everyone." The international roll out will continue in 25 countries including the U.K., France, Switzerland, Germany, and Mexico.

Android 2.3 Gingerbread set to land on Sony Ericsson's Xperia X10 devices

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 07:45 AM PDT

Sony Ericsson has just announced it has decided to reverse its decision on providing an OS upgrade for its Xperia X10 handsets. Users can now expect to receive Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS update as early as the end of Q2 or early Q3 of this year, with non-carrier versions hitting first. Sony Ericsson has no time frame for carrier customized X10 device upgrades, and suggests that upgrades might not be coming at all for some customized versions of the X10. The new update will provide all the core functionality of Gingerbread as well as the Sony Ericsson specific user experience and features of the original software.

Verizon slashes first-gen iPad price to $299

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 07:31 AM PDT

Verizon has slashed the price on its original iPad to $299 for the 16GB Wi-Fi only model. That's $100 cheaper than AT&T's first-gen iPad price, for those keeping score. If you're one of many consumers who have been waiting patiently in the wings for that price to drop further, now is the time for action, as we don't see Verizon's stock lasting very long with prices like that. This sale is already underway at Verizon Wireless retail locations. Other versions of the iPad are also seeing price cuts at Verizon, with the 32GB model at $399.99 and the 64GB at just $499.99. Verizon doesn't offer built-in 3G models of the original iPad.

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 06:50 AM PDT

HSN (Home Shopping Network), of all places, has revealed some information regarding the update to Barnes&Noble's Nook color e-reader that adds an application store as well as other features. The new app store should allow users to install standard Android apps on their Nooks. Barnes&Noble showed off this feature at launch of the tablet last year, but it has taken some time for it to hit the actual device. It also looks like the software will be updated to Android 2.2 Froyo from its current 2.1 Eclair since there now is mention of Adobe Flash Player support, which requires 2.2 Froyo. The Nook Color update with the app store and Flash support should be arriving in April, although a specific date was not revealed.

Apple closing gap; drops iPad 2 ship time to 3-4 weeks

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 06:45 AM PDT

There's finally some good news on the horizon for would-be iPad 2 owners: Apple has shortened its estimated shipping times on the iPad 2 down to 3 to 4 weeks in the U.S. This is certainly an improvement from the previously announced estimate of 4 to 5 weeks wait time, yet not on par with international shipping estimates, which is looking to be between 2 and 3 weeks for now. Clearly, the improvement is a minor one, as Apple only shaved one week off of the wait time. However, this is a welcome indicator that Apple is catching up supply with demand, which may relieve some concerns that the international launch of the tablet would only amplify the problem.
