HTC will open up development support for Scribe pen Posted: 24 Mar 2011 12:32 PM PDT HTC has said that it will open up development access for the Scribe pen-based technology that is used with its upcoming Flyer and EVO View 4G Android tablets. The Scribe pen allows users to interact with the touchscreen in a whole new way. Instead of the dumb stylus from yesterday's tablets, the Scribe pen has a pressure sensitive tip that can impact the way the input is recorded on the tablet. Developers will be able to use this sensor for their own apps. HTC has not announced when developer support for Scribe will arrive, but we imagine it will be sometime after the tablets hit the market this spring. Read the full story here. |
Apple iPad set to get Boxee's TV video-stream app Posted: 24 Mar 2011 12:10 PM PDT Just like the internet creeped its way onto our cell phones (thank Heavens!), the web is about to infiltrate our televisions, as well. Along with the news that Apple's AirPlay could come pre-loaded on TVs as early as this year, and the recent launch of Google TV, it was only a matter of time until someone finally stepped in and said, "Hey Apple, Google: there's an app for that." On that note, Boxee has confirmed plans to release an iPad app that will enable video streaming to PCs, TVs, and Macs loaded with Boxee software. Boxee VP Andrew Kippen said that the technology will be "kind of like AirPlay, but not quite," with no further specifications as to what that might entail. No word yet on pricing or availability on the app from Boxee, but we'll keep you posted. Read the full story here. |

Clearwire CEO on AT&T: they'll beat you up, then buy you Posted: 24 Mar 2011 10:55 AM PDT Clearwire CEO John Stanton, once the founder of VoiceStream (now T-Mobile), has become one of numerous critics to publicly hammer AT&T's proposed acquisition of T-Mobile USA. Stanton called the deal "a huge challenge to competition in the industry." Of course, Clearwire should be concerned, as Sprint, Clearwire's biggest customer, will fall into last place behind Verizon and AT&T should the deal get approval. Read the full story here. |

ZTE brings Android smartphone, LTE tablet to U.S. market this year Posted: 24 Mar 2011 09:36 AM PDT ZTE, despite being a large Chinese company and having a sizeable market overseas, has long had trouble breaking into the high-end market in the U.S. Many of the phones made by ZTE that are available in the U.S. are low cost, basic phones from which the carrier has stripped the ZTE branding and replaced it with its own. Nevertheless, that may change, as ZTE has said that it will bring a high-end Android 2.3 Gingerbread smartphone with a 4.3-inch screen to the U.S. this year, named the Style S. ZTE showed off mockups of its latest smartphone at CTIA 2011. The company also expects to bring an LTE tablet with a 10-inch display, two cameras, and a 1.2GHz processor. The tablet is said to be running Android 3.0 Honeycomb. No carriers have been specifically announced, but we should be hearing more as the year goes on. Read the full story here. |

iPad, iPhone demand could drive Apple's revenue sky-high through 2012 Posted: 24 Mar 2011 08:49 AM PDT Apple recorded 52 percent revenue growth last year, and that is likely to be repeated through 2012 with demand for its iPad tablet and iPhone smartphone reaching record highs. Last year, Apple sold almost 15 million iPads and over 14 million iPhones in the last quarter. Analysts claim that by the end of this year, Apple's sales could reach over $100 billion. If the growth rates continue, sales could hit $200 billion, which would put Apple ahead of HP in sales, who is currently number one in technology sales (Apple is number one tech company in market cap). Apple's iPad 2 to launch in South Korea Posted: 24 Mar 2011 08:49 AM PDT Though there has been speculation about whether the earthquake in Japan would interrupt Apple's production of the iPad 2, South Korea-based mobile carrier KT announced on Wednesday plans to sell the Apple tablet in South Korea next month. In April, SK Telecom plans to begin offering a number of tablets including the Motorola XOOM, Samsung's Galaxy Tabs and LG's Optimus Pad. No pricing details have been confirmed by KT or SK Telecom. FCC walks the line on AT&T/T-Mobile deal Posted: 24 Mar 2011 07:55 AM PDT AT&T has quite a bit of schmoozing in its future, as FCC officials claim that the wireless giant's chances at getting approval for its $39 billion acquisition of T-Mobile are slim to none. While a formal evaluation from the FCC has yet to commence, we've already seen a pretty heated response to the deal from Democratic senators, urging the FCC to look closely at the repercussions of this merger. If the AT&T/T-Mobile deal does come to fruition, America's second-place carrier would become number one and represent 42 percent of wireless subscribers nationally, after swallowing up fourth-place carrier T-Mobile. Motorola possibly looking at platforms other than Android Posted: 24 Mar 2011 07:31 AM PDT Information Week is quoting unnamed sources that indicate Motorola is developing its own mobile web-based operating system, possibly as a way to hedge its bets on the Android smartphone OS that it has been so successful with of late. When asked for comment, Motorola told IW that the project did exist, but that the company was firmly committed to the Android platform. We would like to note that any work on a such an OS could potentially be part of Motorola's "lapdock" plans for its devices, such as the ATRIX, or could merely be a "plan B" in the event that something drastic happens to the Android platform or the company's relationship with Google. The XOOM will cost $599.99 and the hotspot plans start at $19.99 per month for 3GB of data usage. Read the full story here. |

Color social networking app sees lots of green; experience still gray Posted: 24 Mar 2011 06:39 AM PDT A new app from Color Labs, simply titled Color, has generated quite a bit of buzz this morning, which is no surprise with that $41 million-dollar check hanging out of the company's pocket. Sequoia Capital, in collaboration with Bain Capital and Silicon Valley Bank, shelled out the largest amount of money its ever invested in a pre-launch site, even more than it spent on another Sequoia start-up you may have heard of: Google. I don't mean to lead with dollar signs, but to me, $41 million in venture capitalist funding is way more shocking than Color's functionality. Read the full story here. |

In typical Steve Jobs brevity, the request was met with a quick email denial that read "No interest." Tawkon, the developer of the app, has released it on other platforms such as Google's Android and RIM's BlackBerry. The app has been released to jailbroken iPhones instead of through Apple's App Store. Read the full story here. |

BlackBerry users will no longer be able to circumvent DUI checkpoints by pinpointing them on their smartphones. The senators praised RIM for its quick response. SouthernLINC will have access to push-to-talk and data services and will be able to complete nationwide push-to-talk calls from within its home area.
