Gmail for iPhone gets new connection information bar

Posted: 16 Mar 2011 01:36 PM PDT

Google has updated its Gmail mobile site for iPhone or iPod touch users to display a connection bar at the bottom. This status bar will inform the user when it is checking the servers for new mail or sending an outgoing message. When the bar is inactive, it discreetly fades away. This makes the Gmail web app more convenient as users do not have to question whether their outgoing message was sent or not. It also brings it more in line with the capabilities of a native app, bridging the gap between web apps and native apps even more. This new feature requires iOS 4 or higher. Users can browse to gmail.com in the Safari browser on their device to access the new features.

Adobe launches Photoshop Express 2.0 for iPhone, iPad

Posted: 16 Mar 2011 11:16 AM PDT

Adobe Systems today released its Photoshop Express 2.0 application for iOS phones and tablets. The updated version of the app offers a "camera pack" for $3.99, to be purchased within the app. The camera pack comes with a self-timer, quick photo review, and a noise reduction tool. Most smartphone image sensors are very small and generate a great deal of noise, which is why the noise reduction tool is really where you'll get the bang out of those four bucks. The amount of noise reduction is controlled by the user, by sliding a finger to the left or the right. Unfortunately for the 500,000+ iPad 2 owners out there, Adobe's Photoshop Express 2.0 is not supported by the camera on your brand new tablet. The application is available to all devices running iOS 4.2 or later. However, the camera pack won't function on older hardware, which limits its availability to the iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4, a third- or fourth-generation iPod touch, or the iPad.

Nokia Beta Labs reveals video organization app

Posted: 16 Mar 2011 10:36 AM PDT

The folks over at Nokia Beta Labs have a new app in the works called Shoot and Tag, a video recording and editing app that automatically tags scenes during the filming process. Basically, Nokia saw a pretty extensive problem: sifting through video footage, cutting the footage down to a single, selected scene, and posting or sharing it on a mobile phone is a tedious and time-consuming process. In an attempt to quiet those concerns, Nokia's Shoot and Tag application automatically recognizes a change in scenery or subject and tags the scene accordingly. The user also has the option to manually tag scenes by tapping the screen. After filming, the app displays a large screen shot of the movie on the left and then divides the movie into smaller screen shots of tagged scenes on the right side of the user's screen. Nokia Beta Labs is still experimenting with Shoot and Tag, but did spill one possible area of improvement. Currently, deleting videos in the app is a complicated process with multiple steps. However, Nokia mentioned changing the delete action to a simple long-press on the clip.

Posted: 16 Mar 2011 08:50 AM PDT

According to advertising network Chitika, approximately ten percent of the iPhones that are hitting its servers are now on Verizon Wireless. This would mean that Verizon has captured ten percent of the iPhone market in only one month of selling Apple's smartphone. AT&T currently holds the other 90 percent, but we imagine that will continue to change in Verizon's favor as time goes on.

iPad 2 vs. iPad: same price, same speed claims Consumer Reports

Posted: 16 Mar 2011 08:14 AM PDT

Preliminary tests performed on Apple's second-gen iPad showed that the iPad 2, while an upgrade from the original, showed no signs of improved speed, according to Consumer Reports. "One major difference in tech specs is that the iPad 2 has a new processor that's supposed to make it far speedier than the original," said Jeff Fox, analyst at Consumer Reports. The processor he was referring to is the dual-core A5 processor, which Apple claims to be twice as fast as its predecessor, the A4. However, Fox clarified that the similar processing speeds apply more to everyday tasks such as web surfing or checking email. The greatest increase in speed found by Consumer Reports lies in the iPad 2?s graphics processing capabilities, which are nine times faster than that of the original. Unfortunately, there don't seem to be many applications or 3D games yet available that take advantage of this improvement in speed. Fox claims that by maintaining the same price point across both devices, Apple has pushed its already-winning tablet further ahead in the tightening tablet race.

Rural Cellular Association trying to block AT&T from buying more 700MHz spectrum

Posted: 16 Mar 2011 06:10 AM PDT

AT&T may have some trouble purchasing some of the 700MHz spectrum owned by Qualcomm since the Rural Cellular Association has filed a complaint with the FCC to block the sale. Claiming that this would only strengthen the duopoly of AT&T and Verizon Wireless, the RCA says that this will be bad for consumers and that the FCC should take action to promote a more competitive market. The RCA also states that if the sale does go through, AT&T should be required to have automatic roaming agreements with any interested carrier as well as the FCC requiring compatibility of all 700MHz devices across the spectrum.
