Opera launches mobile app store of its own Posted: 08 Mar 2011 04:56 AM PST Opera has launched a mobile app store of its own, competing with the official app stores available on Android, Blackberry, Palm and Symbian. Developed in a partnership with Appia, the Opera Mobile Store offers over 140,000 free and paid applications to users in more than 200 countries. Nokia E7 available for pre-order in the U.S. Posted: 08 Mar 2011 04:53 AM PST Nokia's flagship E7 smartphone has been made available for pre-order for U.S. customers via the company's online web store. The E7, which has had its release date pushed back numerous times since its announcement last year, will command a hefty $679. Bing, Rovio partner for Angry Birds promo Posted: 07 Mar 2011 06:07 PM PST Microsoft's search engine Bing has joined forces with the folks behind the Angry Birds app at Rovio to gain traction for Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 smartphones. As of today, users can watch the pigs hatch a plan to steal the coveted eggs in a 4-part animated video series, sponsored by Bing. The application that took app stores by storm is not even available to Windows Phone 7 smartphones. However, the pigs in the miniseries seem to have already snagged their Windows Phone 7 smartphones, perhaps signaling that human owners of the phones may get to enjoy Angry Birds soon, too. Microsoft paying Nokia more than $1 billion Posted: 07 Mar 2011 06:04 PM PST According to Bloomberg, Microsoft will pay Nokia more than $1 billion to promote and develop software for Windows Phone 7 on its devices. Microsoft will then collect royalties from Nokia on every license of its Windows Phone 7 software that is used on Nokia phones. The deal is said to last for five years. Read the full story here. |
SPB releases Wireless Monitor application for Android smartphones Posted: 07 Mar 2011 01:54 PM PST SPB Software has released its Wireless Monitor application for Android smartphones. Originally released for Windows Mobile devices, the application provides detailed information on the network usage of the device and calculates the cost of such usage based on the current rate plan. This type of application may become more useful as carriers convert more of their plans over from unlimited allotments to smaller limited ones. Apple iPad 2 can keep old AT&T data plan Posted: 07 Mar 2011 01:48 PM PST AT&T has announced that all iPad 3G owners enrolled in its $30/month unlimited data plan can keep that deal after upgrading to the iPad 2 next week. Early last year, AT&T offered an unlimited data plan to early owners of the original iPad, but pulled the plug on that plan shortly after capped payment options proved preferable. As such, only a lucky few early adopters have the coveted unlimited data plan, and, surprisingly enough, they'll get to hold onto it with the iPad 2, too. Read the full story here. |
Motorola: no Android Gingerbread for CHARM and FLIPOUT Posted: 07 Mar 2011 01:00 PM PST Motorola has announced that the FLIPOUT and CHARM will remain on Android 2.1 Eclair and will not receive updates to 2.2 Froyo or 2.3 Gingerbread. Consequently, the devices will not have access to the latest features available to newer operating systems, such as voice actions and updated Gmail clients. HP undercuts Verizon's Palm Pre 2 price Posted: 07 Mar 2011 12:50 PM PST Less than a month after pre-ordering began, HP has drastically slashed the price of its Palm Pre 2, which runs on the Verizon Wireless network. Without a contract, the webOS-powered handset still costs less from Verizon at just $409.99, versus HP's no-contract price point of $429.99. However, with a 2-year agreement, HP is offering the Palm Pre 2 smartphone at only $29.99 on its HP Wireless Central web site. Google adds traffic circumvention to Google Maps Navigation Android app Posted: 07 Mar 2011 11:01 AM PST Google has updated its Navigation app for Android smartphones to add automatic rerouting based on current traffic conditions. Previously the app gave guidance solely based on the fastest route to a destination or a preference for highways or side roads. Now the algorithm will take into consideration current and historical traffic patterns before providing a route to the user. The update is free and available in the Android Market now. Google reports Android malware app count closer to 60 than 20 Posted: 07 Mar 2011 10:39 AM PST Just after initiating a remote kill switch to finally end the week-long struggle against 21 malicious apps in the Android market, BBC Mobile gave word that Google's malware problems were actually three times worse than originally suggested. The list of 20 some applications collecting user data and installing malicious coding onto Google devices grew to just under 60 over the weekend, according to more recent numbers from BBC Mobile. Digia acquires Nokia's Qt commercial licensing and professional services arm Posted: 07 Mar 2011 08:35 AM PST The commercial licensing and professional services arm of Nokia's Qt is in the first stages of being acquired by Finnish software company Digia, as of this morning. The majority of Qt, such as all core development divisions and LGPL licensing, will remain with Nokia. Kik Messenger for Android and iPhone updated with group chat, photo sharing Posted: 07 Mar 2011 07:28 AM PST Kik has announced a new version of its Kik Messenger real-time chat application for the iPhone and for Android smartphones. The latest version of Kik Messenger lets users initiate group chats or share photos with one another. Kik Mesenger reminds us a lot of BlackBerry Messenger, and shares similar features to Beluga and WhatsApp, two competing services. Kik Messenger was originally available on BlackBerry smartphones, too, but RIM pulled it from the App World back in November. Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Android tablet passes through the FCC Posted: 07 Mar 2011 05:44 AM PST It looks like Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 entertainment tablet is getting ready prime time as it has been spotted in some FCC docs recently. The Galaxy Tab 10.1, the successor to the original GALAXY Tab Android tablet, offers a larger 10.1-inch screen, a dual-core 1GHz processor, and runs Android 3.0 Honeycomb, which was designed specifically for use in tablets.
