"To utilize this feature, customers will need to subscribe to the DataPro 4GB/$45 tethering data plan," AT&T spokesperson Seth Bloom said. Sprint could offer LTE 4G devices by next year, says exec Posted: 02 Mar 2011 12:26 PM PST Speaking at a Morgan Stanley technology conference today, Sprint executive Steve Elfman said that the nation's number 3 carrier could have an LTE based 4G network in place and devices for it on sale by next year, if it chooses to go the LTE route as part of its Network Vision plan. Elfman said that Sprint could have nationwide LTE coverage by the end of 2013 in this scenario, but says that Sprint will not make a decision on LTE vs. WiMAX until the middle of this year. The PLAY, which will eventually be carried by Verizon Wireless, maybe as soon as this month, is now sporting a GSM radio capable of global roaming. That means we may see this launch as a Verizon "World phone." The Play is powered by Android 2.3 Gingerbread and offers a full slide-out game pad, with all of the controls you'd expect from a PlayStation device, as well as a 5.1-MP camera with auto-focus and a large 4-inch 854x480 display. The new SDK features Qt Quick, which is designed to make it faster for developers to create working apps for publishing to the Ovi Store. The release is based on Qt 4.7 and intros new APIs for mobile development and enhancements to existing UI tools. "As opposed to previous versions, UI design is no longer based on C++. Amazon will give developers 70 percent of the revenues generated from application sales and will take home the other 30 percent. Amazon's store will cater to both Android powered smartphones and Android tablets. It's unclear if it will launch the store online-only, but Bloomberg suggested that there will be a standalone application available to install apps directly on a phone. The device is priced at $699.99, which doesn't appear to include any T-Mobile subsidies. LG's G-Slate offers an 8.9-inch display, 32GB of internal memory, HSPA+ and Wi-Fi connectivity, and is powered by NVIDIA's dual-core Tegra 2 processor. Apple may be testing gesture-based security for iOS devices Posted: 01 Mar 2011 06:50 AM PST According to 9to5 Mac, Apple is testing a gesture-based unlock security system for its iOS devices, similar to the pattern-unlock system that's already on Android smartphones. Pictures obtained by 9to5 Mac show the familiar 3 x 3 rows of dots, and a user can create a password by tracing a unique pattern across them. Apple is reportedly already using this feature in its Apple Connect application, which is used by Apple employees, but it's unclear if it will ever make it to end-user products.
