Sprint sells 1.5 million iPhones in Q2 2012, still loses $1.4 billion

Sprint reported its Q2 2012 earnings this morning, and though the carrier was able to move a lot of Apple iPhones off of its shelves, its performance was hurt by the costs of shutting down its Nextel network and its continuing Network Vision plan.

Samsung pulls universal search feature from international Galaxy S III

Samsung has issued a new software update for the international version of the Galaxy S III smartphone that removes the universal search feature from the Google search widget. A similar update was recently issued to the U.S. version of the phone as a pro-active measure against potential litigation from Apple against the device. Apple owns a patent on the ability to search content stored on a device itself, and it has already been successful in using the patent in court to get an injunction against the Google Galaxy Nexus smartphone. The update for the international Galaxy S III is surreptitiously called a "stability update" and weighs in at 27MB. Users can download it directly to their phones over-the-air or through Samsung's Kies desktop software.

Broadcom announces gigabit Wi-Fi chip for smartphones and tablets

This week, Broadcom introduced a new 802.11ac Wi-Fi chip that can be used in smartphone and tablet devices. The new BCM4335 chip is the first gigabit Wi-Fi chip for smartphones and includes a Bluetooth 4.0 radio and FM radio in addition to the Wi-Fi module. Broadcom says the new chip is up to three times faster and six times more power efficient than existing 802.11n Wi-Fi chips. The company expects the new chip to be available in devices by early next year.

LG's mobile division struggles in Q2; sales and profits down from Q1

According to LG's Q2 2012 financial report, released today, the company's Mobile Communications division had a rough quarter. Despite a positive Q1, LG's mobile business slipped back into the red during Q2.
