Ban on Google Galaxy Nexus upheld by court; Google promises software fix is coming

Late last night, Judge Lucy Koh of the U.S. District Court in California upheld the preliminary ban on sales of the Google Galaxy Nexus that was decreed last week. Samsung, the maker of the phone, had filed an appeal of the ban, but Judge Koh determined that it was unlikely that Samsung would be able to beat Apple in the companies' upcoming trial and therefore upheld the ban.

Google retires Search app for Symbian smartphones

Google announced today that it will soon put its Search app for Symbian smartphones out to pasture. The search giant plans to kill the app are in addition to the cancellation of a number of its other services. Google says that it will focus its efforts on its mobile web search experience, and that Symbian users can visit www.google.com in their browsers instead of using the app. The company did not say exactly when the Search app for Symbian would no longer be available.

Samsung Galaxy S III hits Verizon's shelves on July 10

Verizon Wireless has announced that the Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone will be available for purchase at the carrier's retail and online starting on July 10. Verizon is offering both the 16GB and 32GB versions of the phone for $199.99 and $249.99, respectively, but the 32GB model will only be available online at first. U.S. Cellular picks up HTC One V smartphone

U.S. Cellular announced today that it is now carrying the HTC One V Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone. The One V features a 3.7-inch WVGA (480 x 800 pixel) display, 1GHz processor, and 5 megapixel camera. U.S. Cellular customers can purchase it from the carrier's online store starting today for $129.99 with a new two-year agreement. It will be available in U.S. Cellular stores starting on July 6.

Google Places for iOS now Google+ Local, gains Zagat integration

Google updated its Places app for iOS last night and, with it, changed the name of the app to Google+ Local and added integration with Zagat ratings. The new app features an improved user interface, the ability to search for locations via Voice Search, improved login security, and various bug fixes. Google+ Local is free and available in the iTunes App Store now.

Android 4.0 ICS finally on more than 10 percent of active Android devices

Last night, Google released its updated Android distribution numbers, and based on the report, it appears that Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is now on 10.9 percent of active Android devices. Android 4.0, which was the latest version of the platform until last week, saw growth of 3.8 percentage points since the June report thanks to the popularity of new devices like HTC's One series and Samsung's Galaxy S III. Manufacturer updates being seeded out to existing Android smartphones and tablets also contributed to this jump. Android 2.3 Gingerbread is still by far the most popular version of the platform in use, however, as it is found on 64 percent of active devices.

Google Nexus 7 allegedly infringes Nokia's patents

The Google Nexus 7 tablet may not even be in the hands of buyers yet, but it is already facing a patent infringement claim. According to The Inquirer, Nokia says that the new Android 4.1 Jelly Bean tablet infringes upon the company's patents and that neither Google nor ASUS are licensees of Nokia's patent portfolio.

Apple fails in attempt to get HTC devices banned in the U.S.

The U.S. International Trade Commission has denied Apple's request to ban the import of HTC smartphones and tablets while it conducts its investigation into whether or not they violate Apple's patents. The ITC delayed the import of the HTC One X and EVO 4G LTE smartphones back in May while it determined whether they were in violation of Apple's patents. The devices were eventually cleared and allowed into the country.

T-Mobile customers see data outage last night; service restored now

T-Mobile customers may have had some trouble using data services on their devices last night, as the carrier confirmed that there was a service outage for a period of time. The carrier noted that users were not able to connect to the internet or had intermittent connectivity. All is well now, however, as T-Mobile says that service is fully restored at this point. It did not say what caused the issue. The carrier provided a statement on the service outage to All Things D: "T-Mobile experienced a network data issue Monday night that affected service for some customers with a 3G or 4G device. Some customers were not able to initiate a data session, or experienced intermittent data connectivity," followed by "T-Mobile's data service has been fully restored. Rapid response engineering teams identified and resolved the issue. We apologize for the inconvenience."

Judge dismisses Samsung's request to lift Galaxy Tab 10.1 ban

Judge Lucy Koh of the U.S. District Court in California yesterday rejected Samsung's request to lift the injunction on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet. The ban was put in place on June 26, ahead of the trial between Apple and Samsung over alleged trade dress infringement.
