Verizon's spectrum acquisition from cable companies near regulatory approval says Reuters

According to anonymous sources reporting to Reuters, Verizon Wireless' plans to purchase $3.9 billion worth of spectrum from a consortium of cable companies is likely to be approved by the Federal Communications Commission. Verizon has faced a mountain of opposition to its purchase since it was announced late last year, and it is reported that it still has to convince the Justice Department that the buy will not lead to higher service prices for consumers.

AT&T says Windows Phone 7.5 Refresh update coming to Nokia Lumia 900 soon

The pink version of the Nokia Lumia 900 isn't the only bit of news for fans of the Windows Phone smartphone, as AT&T also announced today that the Windows Phone 7.5 Refresh update would be coming to the device at some point in the coming weeks. Windows Phone 7.5 Refresh, also known as Tango, offers a number of improvements to the device, such as flip-to-silence ringer, messaging improvements, and other platform enhancements. AT&T also noted that a usage tracking counter, a contact sharing feature, and games from Zynga would be available for the Lumia 900 in the near future. The Lumia 900 is also slated to get the Windows Phone 7.8 update, but a time line has not been provided for that at this point.

Samsung Galaxy Note Android 4.0 ICS update available starting tomorrow

Though Galaxy Note owners in other markets have enjoyed it for some time already, tomorrow Samsung will official launch the Premium Suite for AT&T's version of the Galaxy Note available here in the USA. The Premium Suite adds Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich to the device, as well as a few new apps. While the upgrade to ICS doesn't change much from the user's perspective, since the Samsung TouchWiz user interface is still used on the phone, the new apps do add some interesting functionality.

AT&T opens Watson speech recognition API to developers

AT&T announced today that the API for its Watson speech recognition service is now available to developers. Watson, which was announced earlier this year, is the product of years of research and can recognize and convert various speech patterns into text and commands. AT&T says that it owns over 600 patents related to the service, and there are APIs available for seven different types of voice searches: web search, local business search, question and answer, voice mail to text, SMS, U-verse electronic programming guide, and dictation. Staples to offer Google Nexus 7 Android 4.1 Jelly Bean tablet

Customers interested in picking up the Google Nexus 7 tablet will have another option on their hands in the near future, as office-supply retailer Staples has announced that it will sell the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean device later this month. Staples will sell both the 8GB and 16GB versions of the Nexus 7 for the same $199 and $249 prices that Google offers them through its online store. Anxious buyers can place pre-orders for the tablets with Staples starting today. Staples did not provide an exact date for when the Nexus 7 would be available in its stores.

Pink Nokia Lumia 900 available from AT&T starting on July 15

Nokia revealed today that a pink version of its Lumia 900 smartphone would be available from AT&T this month. The Lumia 900 is currently offered in cyan, black, or white color options, and it has long been rumored that a pink model of the phone would be offered. Spec-wise, the pink Lumia 900 is the same as the other versions, with a 4.3-inch ClearBlack AMOLED display, 1.4GHz processor, 8 megapixel camera, and support for AT&T's 4G LTE network. Customers can pick up the pink Lumia 900 starting on July 15 for $99.99 with a new two-year agreement.

AT&T launches 4G LTE service in six new markets, expands coverage in two others

AT&T is continuing the expansion of its 4G LTE network and, today, it has revealed that the faster data service is coming to six new markets. The five new markets to get AT&T's flavor of LTE are Buffalo, New York; Burlington, North Carolina; Greensboro and Winston-Salem, North Carolina; Corpus Christi, Texas; Gainesville, Georgia; and Wichita, Kansas. The carrier also announced expanded coverage in Cleveland, Ohio and Charlotte, North Carolina.

AT&T adds international text messaging to lower tier GoPhone pre-paid plan

AT&T announced today that, starting on July 15, users of its $25 per month GoPhone pre-paid plan will be able to take advantage of unlimited text messaging to Canada, Mexico, and 100 other countries at no additional charge. Prior to this change, the international text messaging service was only available on the $50 per month or $2 per day GoPhone plans. The $25 per month plan also offers 250 minutes of talk time and unlimited domestic text messaging.

UK court says Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 doesn't infringe Apple's design patents

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 may be banned from sale in the U.S. because it possibly infringes Apple's design patents on the iPad, but over in the UK, courts have determined that the device doesn't step on Apple's toes. This may sound like a victory for Samsung, but the judge's comments that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 lacks "the same understated and extreme simplicity which is possessed by the Apple design" and "they are not as cool" are sure to sting the Korean company's ego. The judge noted that consumers were unlikely to confuse the two devices because the Galaxy Tab is thinner and has "unique details" on the back when compared to the iPad. Apple has been given 21 days to appeal the decision.

BlackBerry App World hits 3 billion downloads since launch

RIM announced last week that its BlackBerry App World has seen over 3 billion app downloads since it was launched in 2009. The App World provides apps for BlackBerry smartphones and the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. RIM notes that this figure does not include apps downloaded from third-party app stores, apps downloaded directly from the web, or apps used internally by companies around the world. For comparison, Google says that the Google Play Store (formerly Android Market) has seen over 20 billion app installs, while Apple claims that 30 billion apps have been downloaded from its iTunes App Store.
