Sprint set to light up 4G LTE service in five markets today Posted: 15 Jul 2012 06:42 AM PDT Today is the day that many Sprint customers have been waiting for: the carrier is turning on 4G LTE service on its network. Well, in five markets at least. Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, Kansas City, and San Antonio are all scheduled to get blanketed with Sprint's new 4G LTE service today, though some users have reported that the service has been live for a few days already in a number of the markets. Sprint plans to continue its 4G LTE rollout this year and into next, though it has not announced which markets will be next or when they will receive the speedier data service. Sprint's 4G LTE service is accessible with the HTC EVO 4G LTE, Samsung Galaxy S III, Google Galaxy Nexus, and LG Viper 4G LTE, as well as certain wireless hotspots and USB modems. RIM ordered to pay $147.2 million fine for alleged patent infringement Posted: 15 Jul 2012 06:05 AM PDT RIM has been hit with a $147.2 million fine for allegedly infringing upon patents owned by Mformation Technologies. The patents are related to remote device management, and the fine is based on an $8 royalty fee for for each BlackBerry smartphone that is connected to RIM's BlackBerry Enterprise Server in the U.S. RIM had argued that the patent infringement claim was invalid because it was already using the technology before Mformation filed its patent application. Unfortunately, a San Francisco jury disagreed and hit the Canadian smartphone maker with the fine. RIM says that it has legal motions in progress that could cause the decision to be reversed. Nokia Lumia 900 now available in pink; AT&T drops price to $49.99 Posted: 15 Jul 2012 05:13 AM PDT As revealed last week, the Nokia Lumia 900 can now be purchased from AT&T in pink. Additionally, Nokia and AT&T have dropped the price of the Windows Phone 7.5 smartphone to $49.99 on-contract, down from the $99.99 price that it was launched at. The Lumia 900 features a single-piece polycarbonate design, 1.4GHz processor, 8 megapixel camera, and 4.3-inch ClearBlack AMOLED display. Microsoft has announced that it will not be upgraded to Windows Phone 8 later this year, but it will see the Windows Phone 7.8 update that offers a redesigned start screen.
