HTC promises Android 4.1 Jelly Bean updates for One X, One XL, One S smartphones

HTC has released a statement to the media concerning its plans to update a number of its recent smartphones to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Unsurprisingly, the manufacturer plans to update its high-end One series to the latest version of Android, though a specific time line for when the updates would be available was not provided.

Google netted $2.79 billion in Q2; new Motorola division lost $223 million

Google just released its Q2 2012 financial report, and as usual, it was another quarter of growth for the company. This quarter, Google was able to complete its acquisition of Motorola Mobility, though based on Motorola's performance, it looks like Google has its work cut out for it.

Sony updates Music Unlimited app for Android smartphones, tablets

Sony released an updated version of its Music Unlimited app for Android devices today. The updated version offers a new My Channels feature to smartphone users that lets them create and control custom radio stations built around a particular artist. Additionally, tablet owners gain the ability to listen to music while offline. The updated Music Unlimited app is available through the Google Play Store now.

Huawei Ascend P1 to be available from Vodafone in the UK starting next month

Huawei has announced that its Ascend P1 smartphone will be available for purchase in the UK starting next month. The Ascend P1 is an exceptionally thin Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone, measuring only 7.69mm thick. It is powered by a dual-core TI OMAP processor clocked at 1.5GHz, and features a 4.3-inch display with qHD resolution. Vodafone will be offering the P1 for free with monthly plans of 26 GBP or greater. Huawei says that it will be available from other retailers later on.

Google updates Play Music app with new UI, improved widget

Google has released an updated version of its Play Music app for Android smartphones and tablets. The new version includes a redesigned user interface, the ability to re-order currently playing music, a large album art view in the Recent section, and an improved home screen widget that displays album art and lets users thumbs up a song. Google also says that the new version is "harder, better, faster, stronger", implying that there are bug fixes and performance enhancements elsewhere throughout the app. Google Play Music is free and available in the Google Play Store now.

Verizon adds 1.2 million new subscribers, earns $5.7 billion in Q2 2012

Verizon Wireless releases its Q2 2012 financial report this morning, and from the looks of it, things are going pretty well for the nation's number one wireless carrier. Big Red added 1.2 million new subscribers to its customer base in Q2, and it saw significant increases in revenues across the company.
