HP releases version 2 of Enyo development framework for mobile devices Posted: 18 Jul 2012 11:56 AM PDT HP's Enyo project, the open-source development platform that sprung from the ashes of webOS, has now reached version 2 and is available for developers to use. The new version of Enyo branches out beyond webOS and now lets developers use it to build apps for iOS and Android, as well as browser-based web apps. Version 2 also includes new user interface widgets for developers to play with in their apps, as well as a new system for outside developers to contribute code to the project. Apple ordered by UK court to post that the Samsung Galaxy Tab does not copy the iPad Posted: 18 Jul 2012 10:54 AM PDT The UK court that ruled earlier this month that the Samsung Galaxy Tab does not infringe upon Apple's design patents for the iPad and is simply "not as cool" has now ordered Apple to post a notice on its website and in advertising saying as much. Google launches Gmail SMS service in Africa Posted: 18 Jul 2012 09:06 AM PDT Smartphones and data plans may be commonplace in developed countries, but there is a large part of the world where people use basic phones without data plans everyday. Google has launched a new service for mobile phone users in Africa that lets them send and receive Gmail messages through standard SMS. The new Gmail SMS service works on any phone that supports SMS messages, even if it doesn't have 3G coverage or a data connection. Users can forward their Gmail messages to their phones, and then use commands, such as MORE, PAUSE, and RESUME, to control the flow of emails to their devices. Currently, the free service is available to Gmail users in Ghana, Nigeria, and Kenya, though it will likely be rolled out to other countries soon. Read the full story here. |
Verizon's 4G LTE service to cover 337 markets tomorrow Posted: 18 Jul 2012 07:19 AM PDT Verizon Wireless is well on its way to reaching its goal of covering 400 markets with 4G LTE service by the end of this year, as the carrier has announced further expansion slated for tomorrow. Thirty-three new markets will see Verizon's LTE service on July 19, bringing the total number of covered markets to 337. Verizon says that its 4G LTE service will be expanded in 32 additional markets tomorrow, as well. Notable areas that will see the LTE service go live include Columbus, Ga; Phenix City, Ala.; and Smiths Station, Ala. Read the full story here. |
Motorola's devices will stay on shelves despite ban, says the company Posted: 18 Jul 2012 06:32 AM PDT An import ban on a number of Motorola's mobile devices is due to take effect today, but the company says that the devices will remain on sale in spite of it. Motorola provided Reuters with a statement saying that it has taken a range of "proactive measures" to make sure that its devices no longer infringe upon Microsoft's patent, which is the reason for the ban. PayPal buys card.io to expand its mobile wallet service Posted: 18 Jul 2012 05:51 AM PDT This week, PayPal announced the acquisition of card.io, a company that develops software to scan credit card information using a smartphone's camera, eliminating the need to type it in. PayPal says that the employees of card.io will be working on PayPal's mobile wallet team. The existing card.io technology will still be made available for developers to incorporate into their own mobile commerce apps. The financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Skyhook's new location tracking service promises better battery life Posted: 18 Jul 2012 05:23 AM PDT Skyhook, a location data and positioning company, today announced a new Always-On location service that promises to offer much better battery life than older location tracking services. Developers will be able to integrate Skyhook's new service into their apps and track a user's location as often as every 30 seconds without a noticeable decline in battery life. As with any other location-based service, user's will have the choice to opt-in to the tracking if they want. Skyhook says its new service also enables location tracking while in an airplane at up to 40,000 feet above the ground. The new location features are part of version 4.6 of Skyhook's SDK for Android.
