RIM CEO insists 4G LTE version of the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet is coming soon

Posted: 28 Jun 2012 02:32 PM PDT

During an investor call to discuss financial earnings, RIM CEO Thorsten Heins announced that a 4G LTE version of the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet would be available very soon. Heins says that the LTE PlayBook is in final testing with carriers already, and that it should be on shelves in the near future. Unfortunately, RIM has been promising a 4G PlayBook (originally with WiMAX) since the Wi-Fi version was launched in the spring of last year. Aside from the upcoming LTE PlayBook, RIM announced that it would be delaying the launch of the new BlackBerry 10 platform until the first quarter of next year. RIM says that carriers preferred a Q1 launch instead of one during the holidays this year, but it's hard to see how any delay to the new platform can be beneficial for RIM at this point.

Posted: 28 Jun 2012 06:39 AM PDT

Google expanded the functionality of its Google Play Store web site to allow desktop users to remotely update or uninstall apps on their Android smartphones and tablets. Prior to this change, it was only possible to install new apps remotely - you couldn't uninstall apps or update them through the web interface. Now, users only have to press update or uninstall when viewing an app on the website, and that app will be updated or removed from their device. Unfortunately, some apps are not compatible with the uninstall feature, as many carrier and system apps are locked to the phone and cannot be removed. This remote removal and update tool can be accessed at play.google.com and is available now in most modern web browsers.

National Weather Emergency Alerts system goes live today

Posted: 28 Jun 2012 06:12 AM PDT

It is a bit later than we initially expected, but the National Weather Emergency Alerts (WEA) system from the National Weather Service is going live in the U.S. today. The WEA provides cell phone users with text message alerts of weather emergencies in their area, such as approaching tornadoes, hurricanes, blizzards, and other conditions. The free service is enabled for all users automatically, but those that do not want to receive the message have the ability to opt out if they would like. The service is supported by AT&T, Cellcom, Cricket, Sprint Nextel, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular, and Verizon Wireless, which cover about 97 percent of the wireless users in the U.S. Not all devices are compatible with the system yet, and it doesn't look like Apple's popular iPhone will be certified to work with the WEA system until this fall.
