Posted: 08 Jun 2012 10:23 AM PDT

Last week, ETSI announced that it had settled on a design specification for the fourth form factor SIM (4FF, or nano-SIM) card. However, it did not provide an image of what the chosen design looks like. Later, it was revealed by Giesecke & Devrient, the company that produces SIM cards, that Apple's design had won over competing entries from Nokia, RIM, and Motorola. Today, ETSI updated its documentation to show what the new nano-SIM looks like, and it appears that it did not alter Apple's proposed design at all.

Standards be damned: Samsung Galaxy S III requires special MHL adapter

Posted: 08 Jun 2012 06:14 AM PDT

Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL) ports are becoming an increasingly popular way for smartphone manufacturers to simplify production and reduce the numbers of ports on their devices. A supposed standard, MHL lets users output video and images from their mobile phone over HDMI to a TV through what appears to be a normal USB port. Since it's a standard, all MHL adapter cables should work with all devices that have MHL ports. However, Samsung seems to have other plans with its Galaxy S III, as UK retailer Clove has discovered that only new Samsung-branded MHL cables will work with the device. Older cables that were compatible with the Galaxy S II, Google Galaxy Nexus, and a host of other smartphones on the market won't work with the Galaxy S III thanks to a slightly different pin layout. Of course, Samsung is happy to sell Galaxy S III buyers a new MHL cable HDTV Adapter kit for about 25 GBP (US$39).

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich isn't just for the smartphones and tablets sitting at the top of the totem pole, and Sony is making sure that even lowly, inexpensive handsets in its lineup are upgraded. To that end, the manufacturer has released the Android 4.0 upgrade for the Xperia mini pro, an inexpensive smartphone with a smallish display and QWERTY keyboard launched last year. Despite the mini pro's single-core 1GHz processor and meager 400MB of on-board storage, it is getting the full Android 4.0 treatment with Sony's custom user interface on top. Mini pro users across the globe can plug their phones into a computer and use Sony's PC Companion software to install the upgrade now.
