Yesterday, Judge Lucy Koh of the U.S. District Court in California issued a preliminary injunction banning sales of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet. The judge issued the decision after Apple appealed previous denials of its request for injunctions against numerous Samsung devices.

Apple launches stand-alone Podcasts app for iPhone, iPad

Today, Apple released a new stand-alone Podcasts app for the iPhone and iPad, breaking the podcast feature out of the Music app for the first time. The new Podcasts app features the refreshed design language that Apple is applying to all of its stock apps for iOS 6 coming this fall, and lets users stream podcast episodes to their mobile devices over Wi-Fi or cellular connections.

AT&T broadens Enhanced Push-To-Talk trials, plans to offer five compatible smartphones this year

AT&T announced today that it is expanding the trials of its new Enhanced Push-To-Talk (PTT) service that is due to launch later this year. Enhanced PTT promises to offer improved performance, features, and device choices when compared with the basic PTT service that AT&T currently provides. AT&T says that it plans to have five Enhanced PTT compatible smartphones on shelves this year, including multiple options from Samsung. The Enhanced PTT-enabled smartphones will be able to integrate PTT services with apps as well as offer other advanced services.

HTC Connect program certifies A/V devices for use with HTC smartphones

HTC has announced a new certification program called HTC Connect for audio/visual devices that offer wireless connections to HTC smartphones. The Connect program guarantees that devices will support high-quality, wireless audio and video streaming from HTC smartphones. Pioneer is the first manufacturer to bring Connect-certified devices to the market, and HTC Connect will be part of Pioneer's 2012 DLNA-equipped device lineup. Though Connect applies to DLNA devices now, HTC says that it will expand the program to Bluetooth, NFC, wireless speakers, and car audio and video in the future.

Wi-Fi Alliance begins tests of Wi-Fi Passpoint certified devices and infrastructure

The Wi-Fi Alliance announced today that it has begun testing devices and infrastructure for its Wi-Fi Passpoint program. The Passpoint program is a joint effort between wireless network operators, Wi-Fi hotspot operators, and Wi-Fi service providers to offer seamless Wi-Fi hotspots for mobile device users. The Passpoint program offers a secure connection to Wi-Fi hotspots without requiring the user to login or manually connect to a network. Initially, the Wi-Fi Alliance is certifying Wi-Fi access points for use with the program, but it expects to have smartphones and tablets certified this year.

Qualcomm lends Android developers a helping hand with new Snapdragon SDK

Firefox is releasing a new version of its web browser for Android smartphones today that includes improved performance, a re-designed user interface, and support for Adobe Flash Player. Instagram gains ability to share likes to Facebook in latest update

Instagram has released updates for its iOS and Android apps that add the ability to share liked photos to Facebook. This new functionality was revealed by Facebook last week and can be optionally enabled by users in the Instagram settings menu. Additionally, the new version features a revamped Explore tab with improved search for users and tags. There are a handful of general bug fixes and performance improvements as well. The iOS version also gains the updated profile tab that debuted with the Android version of Instagram earlier this year. Instagram is free and available in the iTunes App Store and Google Play Store now.

Facebook Messenger for iOS, Android updated with in-app notifications, better photo sharing

Yesterday, Facebook outed version 1.8 of its Facebook Messenger app for iOS and Android. The new version of the app offers in-app notifications, which makes it easy to carry on multiple conversations. It also adds the ability to include friends of friends in conversations and set availability notifications. Camera fans will enjoy the improved photo support which lets you upload larger images and pinch to zoom. Performance updates include faster loading times and more reliable push notifications. Facebook Messenger is free and can be downloaded from the iTunes App Store or the Google Play Store now. Additionally, Facebook updated its Pages Manager app for the iPhone with the ability to view and reply to messages. It also improved the notification controls. Facebook Pages Manager is also free and available in the iTunes App Store now.
