Samsung has been building Near Field Communications (NFC) features into a number of its phones for quite a while, and now it has finally released an accessory that takes advantage of their NFC capabilities. The new TecTiles Programmable NFC Tags let users automate a variety of functions on their smartphones with just a single tap.

Apple iPhone 3GS, 4 won't get turn-by-turn navigation, fly-over maps in iOS 6

Apple has revealed that the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 will not be getting all of the new features that are coming with the brand-new Maps app in iOS 6 announced this week. Most notably, the older devices will not get the turn-by-turn directions and the nifty 3D flyover features that Apple was proudly displaying during yesterday's presentation of the new operating system.

AT&T shows interest in Verizon's 700MHz spectrum for sale

Speaking during an investor conference this week, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson claimed that AT&T would be interested in purchasing the 700MHz spectrum Verizon Wireless is attempting to offload. Verizon announced that it would sell the Lower A and B block spectrum that it holds the rights to if the government were to approve its purchase of AWS spectrum from a group of cable companies.

HTC's efforts to use Google's patents against Apple denied by judge

A judge for the U.S. International Trade Commission has ruled that HTC is not allowed to use five patents given to it by Google in its case against Apple. Apple had requested that the court throw the patents out of the court room on the grounds that HTC did not have the right to sue with them, and the court agreed.

Verizon's new shared data plans are great for smartphone users, less so for feature phone owners

This morning, Verizon Wireless announced its new Share Everything Plans, which let customers share one data plan with up to 10 different devices. These new plans caused quite a stir among Verizon customers, as many saw it as a way for Verizon to charge more for their services each month. But, if we analyze the new options and compare them to Verizon's current plan options, the new plans carry a lot of value, and will likely save the average customer money over the long run.

C Spire nabs the Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone with 4G LTE support

Regional carrier C Spire announced today that it will offer the Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone later this year. The Galaxy S III will support 4G LTE service on C Spire's upcoming LTE network, due to launch in 20 Mississippi markets this September. C Spire did not say exactly when the Galaxy S III will hit shelves or how much it will cost. C Spire is the sixth U.S. carrier to announce the phone, and the second regional carrier behind U.S. Cellular to get it. The Galaxy S III is the latest in a line of big smartphone grabs for the small carrier, starting with the Apple iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, which arrived for C Spire back in March.

Leaked slides reveal Sprint's intent to launch its own mobile wallet app

Sprint has been the lone official carrier partner of Google's Wallet mobile payment service since Wallet launched last year, but it appears that the carrier intends to offer a mobile payment service of its own in the near future. Presentation slides detailing a Sprint Touch Wallet app have leaked to the internet, making us question what Sprint and Google's relationship will look like going forward.

Updated Spotify for Android exits beta, lands in Google Play Store today

Back in April, Spotify showed off a completely redesigned version of its app for Android smartphones and offered users the ability to download a beta version of the app, if they would like. Now, the updated Spotify app is leaving its beta tag behind and will be available in the Google Play Store today. The new version offers greater compatibility with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, more social features, high-resolution album artwork and artist images, 320kbps streaming, and faster performance than older versions of the app. Spotify has also added Last.fm scrobbling to the final version of the new app, which wasn't available in the beta version. Users can download the new version of Spotify from the Google Play Store for free, though use of it requires a $9.99 per month Spotify premium subscription.

Verizon Wireless has been talking about shared data plans for what seems like forever, but now the carrier has made good on its promise to launch them this summer. Verizon's new Share Everything Plans offer unlimited voice, unlimited text, video, and picture messaging, and a single data allotment for up to ten different devices.
