Android 4.1 Jelly Bean outed, headed to Google Galaxy Nexus Posted: 21 Jun 2012 12:16 PM PDT The next version of Android is expected to be unveiled at the Google I/O developer conference next week, but information from Google's own Play Store reveals that it will be called Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and will be coming to the Google Galaxy Nexus smartphone. The information is seen on the listing for the smartphone in the store, along with an image showing a slightly redesigned search bar and app launcher. Facebook extends Like button to third-party mobile apps Posted: 21 Jun 2012 10:44 AM PDT Yesterday, Facebook announced a new feature for mobile apps that allows the apps to integrate with the Facebook Like button. When users like, approve, heart, or thumbs up something in an app that has enabled the feature, this action will be displayed on their Facebook timelines. Other users will also get notifications through Facebook when someone likes their content within an app, such as hearting a photo in Instagram. In addition to Instagram, the new feature is present in the latest version of foursquare for mobile devices. It will likely show up in other popular mobile apps in the near future, as well. RIM says first BlackBerry 10 devices will lack physical keyboards Posted: 21 Jun 2012 09:30 AM PDT RIM has revealed today that the first smartphones with the new BlackBerry 10 mobile operating system will not have physical keyboards and will only offer a virtual on-screen keyboard for text input. The phone maker did say that it plans to introduce BlackBerry 10 smartphones with keyboards at some point in the future, but it did not say when that would be. BlackBerry 10 is RIM's next-generation mobile platform and is due to arrive some time this fall. The virtual keyboard features predictive text technology that learns the user's typing patterns. It features a 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display, 8 megapixel camera, and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with Samsung's TouchWiz interface. The version of the Galaxy S III offered in the U.S. has a dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor and 2GB of RAM. The Galaxy S III also has some unique features like the S Voice personal assistant and S Beam NFC sharing system. It will be available from AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular, and Verizon Wireless, and is priced starting at $199.99 with a new two-year contract. Watch the video here. |
Samsung Galaxy S II for AT&T gets updated to Android 4.0 ICS Posted: 21 Jun 2012 08:28 AM PDT Everyone's focus may be on the new Samsung Galaxy S III, but owners of the original Galaxy S II from AT&T should be happy to know that the long-awaited Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update is now available to download and install. The update offers Android 4.0.3 and includes Samsung's TouchWiz interface. It is not available over-the-air, so owners will have to use Samsung's Kies desktop software to apply the update manually. Note that this is for the 4.3-inch Galaxy S II without LTE, not the 4.5-inch Galaxy S II Skyrocket that has LTE. Read the full story here. |
AT&T announces delay of Samsung Galaxy S III pre-order shipments Posted: 21 Jun 2012 08:04 AM PDT We have already heard about delays and altered launch plans for the Samsung Galaxy S III from Sprint and T-Mobile, and now AT&T has issued a statement saying much the same. The carrier says that customers who pre-ordered the phone and were given an estimated arrival date of June 21 can now expect to see their phones on Monday, June 25. Starting today, those that place new pre-orders should get the Galaxy S III in about 10 days, stock permitting. AT&T says the delay is due to "manufacturer supply constraints." The carrier has not announced when it plans to have a full retail launch of the Galaxy S III. Read the full story here. |
Skype updates Windows Phone app to version 1.2 Posted: 21 Jun 2012 06:56 AM PDT This week, Skype released version 1.2 of its app for Windows Phone smartphones. The new version adds the ability to edit a phone number in the dial-pad before calling and displays all phonebook contacts that have a phone number in the Skype contact list. It also includes fixes for bugs in the messaging section and addresses the issue of incoming notifications ending a Skype call. Nokia Lumia 710, 800 to get Wi-Fi hotspot, more with update coming June 27 Posted: 21 Jun 2012 05:39 AM PDT Nokia has revealed that a software update for the Lumia 710 and Lumia 800 smartphones will be coming on June 27. The update adds three new features to the devices: Internet Sharing (Microsoft's term for wireless hotspot functionality), Flip-to-Silence the phone ringer, and the ability to stream media from the phone to other devices. The updates will be released worldwide starting on June 27 and will require users to use the Zune desktop software for PC or Windows Phone Connector for Mac to install them.
