Video: Samsung Galaxy S III S Voice feature demonstration and Siri comparison

Posted: 25 Jun 2012 11:33 AM PDT

The Samsung Galaxy S III features a new voice controlled personal assistant called S Voice. Similar to the Siri personal assistant on the Apple iPhone 4S, the S Voice lets users use natural language to interact with their Galaxy S III smartphones. It can be used to set timers, create calendar events, perform web searches, toggle phone features like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and more. It can also be used to remotely snap a picture, dismiss an alarm, or answer or reject and incoming call among other things. As you can see in the video, S Voice isn't always the most responsive, even in a quiet environment (Apple's Siri isn't so hot either, as you can see). Google updates Gmail for iOS with full support for Notification Center

Posted: 25 Jun 2012 10:33 AM PDT

Today, Google released an update to its Gmail app for the iPhone and iPad that adds full support for the Notification Center in iOS. A point of contention for many users, Gmail for iOS did not have pop-up notifications when it was released last year and only offered a sound alert and badge icon when new messages came in. Now users can view new emails in on their lock screens and in the Notification shade in iOS. Google notes that notifications are also much faster than before - up to five times as fast, in fact. Additionally, it is now possible to choose an alternate email address to send from when composing new messages. The updated Gmail for iOS is free and available in the iTunes App Store now.

Video: Sony Xperia ion (AT&T) video review

Posted: 25 Jun 2012 09:38 AM PDT

The Sony Xperia ion is the company's first smartphone to come to the U.S. since it dropped the Ericsson name late last year. It is also Sony's first 4G LTE smartphone. Featuring a 4.6-inch HD display, 1.5GHz dual-core processor, and 12 megapixel camera, the ion has a lot going for it on its spec sheet. Unfortunately, in practice, the display is not all that impressive, the phone's performance is choppy, and it is held back by the outdated Android 2.3 Gingerbread software. One bright spot would be the camera which takes pretty good stills, but disappoints on the video front. The Xperia ion will be available from AT&T on June 24 for $99.99. Be sure to check out our full in-depth review for more on the Sony Xperia ion.

Android 4.0 ICS update for the Samsung Galaxy S II officially available from AT&T

Posted: 25 Jun 2012 07:28 AM PDT

Last week was a roller coaster ride of emotions for Samsung Galaxy S II owners on AT&T, as the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update was available for a brief time and then pulled by the carrier. AT&T promised that it would be available again soon, and now the carrier has announced that, starting tomorrow, the update can be downloaded by all users. Galaxy S II owners will have to use the Samsung Kies desktop software to apply the update, as it will not be made available over-the-air. AT&T says that Android 4.0 updates for other devices in its lineup (the carrier didn't mention which devices specifically, but we assume the Galaxy S II Skyrocket and the Galaxy Note are among that group) will be coming this summer.

Samsung unveils quad-core LTE variant of Galaxy S III for Korea

Posted: 25 Jun 2012 06:49 AM PDT

Though the Samsung Galaxy S III was announced in May to have a quad-core Samsung Exynos 4 Quad processor, the version that is available in the U.S. features a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chip that's compatible with LTE and HSPA+ 42 networks. The dual-core chip apparently isn't good enough for Samsung's home market of Korea, however, as the company has unveiled a variant of the phone that features its quad-core processor along with LTE support.
