Samsung becomes Platinum member of The Linux Foundation

This week, The Linux Foundation announced that Samsung has become a Platinum member of its organization. Samsung is no stranger to the Linux operating system: it works with it for its Android devices and the Tizen platform. The Linux Foundation says that by joining the group, Samsung is "reiterating its commitment to Linux." Samsung adds that it is "looking forward to increasing collaboration and support for our growing portfolio of Linux-based devices and to making contributions that advance Linux for all." The company will be a Platinum member of the group, the highest membership available, and will have a seat on the foundation's Board of Directors.

The new Barnes & Noble NOOK Simple Touch with Glowlight is an e-ink based e-reader device that features a fully functional backlight for nighttime reading. Apart from the backlight, some minor cosmetic changes, and the higher price, it is nearly identical to the original NOOK Simple Touch.

Microsoft launches on{X} automation system for Android smartphones

Microsoft may be focusing most of its efforts on its Windows Phone platform, but the company has just announced a new side project called on(X) for Android smartphones. on(X) (pronounced "on-ex") is a website and app for Android devices that lets power users set a variety of different rules to perform automated actions.

Samsung Galaxy S III on Verizon Wireless to support global roaming...eventually

Verizon Wireless has confirmed to Phone Scoop that it's version of the Samsung Galaxy S III will support global roaming, though it won't do so at launch. Verizon says that a future software update for the Galaxy S III will enable 2G and 3G roaming capabilities on the phone for networks in countries outside of North America. The carrier did not say when the update would be made available. Verizon plans to offer the Galaxy S III later this month, with pre-orders starting on June 6.

Virgin Mobile reported to sell pre-paid iPhone on July 1

According to The Wall Street Journal, Sprint's Virgin Mobile brand will offer a pre-paid version of the Apple iPhone as early as next month. Just last week, Cricket announced that it would offer a pre-paid iPhone on June 22, making it the first pre-paid carrier in the U.S. to sell the smartphone.

Verizon expands 4G LTE footprint to 258 markets on June 21

Verizon Wireless has announced further expansion of its ever-growing 4G LTE network. On June 21, Verizon users in Columbus and Seymour, Ind. and Traverse City, Mich. will have access to the carrier's 4G LTE service. With those markets, Verizon's LTE service will then be available in 258 markets across the U.S.

Qualcomm refreshes Snapdragon processor naming scheme

Qualcomm may have rebranded its Snapdragon line with S1 through S4 monikers just last year, but apparently the company didn't feel that the rebranding was enough to prevent customer confusion with its various processors. The company announced this week that it will further differentiate its lineup of processors with Play, Plus, Pro, and Prime names.

Google buys Quickoffice, will integrate with existing Google Apps services

Google has announced that it has purchased Quickoffice, a maker of office productivity apps for a variety of platforms, including iOS, Android, and webOS. Quickoffice has long had a reputation for supporting nearly every file format that exists for office suites, and Google plans to integrate Quickoffice's features into its own Google Apps products. Google did not say exactly what would happen to the existing Quickoffice apps, but it did say that it would continue to support Quickoffice and its users. The terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Apple to drop Google Maps for its own mapping service this year says WSJ

Reports that Apple plans to ditch Google Maps for its own mapping service in the next version of iOS have been circling for months already, but now The Wall Street Journal claims that it has proof of the plans from current and former Apple employees. Apple is expected to demonstrate the new mapping software next week at its Worldwide Developer Conference, and a release is scheduled for later this fall when the new version of iOS is available to the public.

Nuance's Dragon ID will unlock your phone with voice commands

Nuance, the company behind the Dragon line of voice recognition software (and Apple's Siri personal assistant), has announced Dragon ID, a new piece of software that will let users unlock their smartphones or tablets with voice commands. Called "voice biometrics," the technology in Dragon ID promises to let users forget about passwords and still securely lock their mobile devices.

Samsung Galaxy Exhilarate eco-friendly 4G LTE smartphone hits AT&T on June 10

AT&T has announced that the Samsung Galaxy Exhilarate smartphone will be available for purchase on June 10. Announced way back at CES this January, the Exhilarate features a rear casing made from 80 percent recycled material and comes with an energy-efficient charger. The phone sports a 4-inch, Super AMOLED display, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 5 megapixel camera, and Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Buyers will be able to pick up the Galaxy Exhilarate for $49.99 with a new two-year agreement.

Nokia releases Maps 2.0, updated Transport beta for Lumia phones

Nokia has released a major update to its Nokia Maps app for Windows Phones smartphones to the Windows Phone Marketplace. The new version includes more social features and the ability to sync favorites across the various platforms that have access to Nokia Maps. Additionally, Nokia has released a new beta version of its Transport app with improved search functions and more.

Microsoft's Windows Phone Marketplace sees 100,000 app submissions

Microsoft's Windows Phone Marketplace has been rapidly growing since its debut late in 2010, and it has now reached the 100,000 app milestone. According to All About Windows Phone, 100,145 apps have been published to the Marketplace since October 2010, with 88,371 now available to download (as of June 3, 2012). The Marketplace hit 100,000 apps faster than the Android Market (now Google Play Store) did, but slower than the iTunes App Store for iOS did. One of the largest criticisms against Windows Phone has been the lack of apps, but that is certainly changing as the app store continues to grow. However, one thing that sheer numbers of apps don't always guarantee is big name apps with a lot of buzz coming to the platform, which Windows Phone still struggles with.

Judge delays Apple's efforts to ban Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 in the U.S.

Apple has been working on getting the U.S. to ban the sale of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 because of design patent infringements for some time now, but it looks like things are going to drag out even longer for the company now that the presiding judge in the case has put the brakes on the request for the time being.

HTC first third-party manufacturer to join Sony's PlayStation Certified program

During the E3 gaming conference in Los Angeles this week, Sony announced the next step for its PlayStation Certified license program for mobile gaming: it has opened up the program to third parties, and HTC is the first manufacturer to sign on.
