C Spire sues AT&T over alleged anti-competitive actions Posted: 31 May 2012 02:46 PM PDT Regional carrier C Spire has filed an antitrust lawsuit with a U.S. federal court against AT&T claiming that the larger carrier used its market influence to prevent C-Spire from making full use of the 700MHz spectrum that it purchased rights to in 2008. C Spire also says that AT&T colluded with hardware suppliers like Qualcomm and Motorola to make sure that regional carriers would not have access to the latest and greatest devices because of incompatibility between the various band classes of the 700MHz spectrum. RIM releases BlackBerry PlayBook OS version 2.1 beta to developers Posted: 31 May 2012 02:11 PM PDT RIM has released a beta of version 2.1 of the BlackBerry PlayBook OS for the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet to developers. The new beta includes a number of enhancements and improvements over version 2.0 of the platform, including better HTML5 support, portrait support in the email, calendar, and contacts apps, improved folder support in the email app, full device encryption, separate windows for each Android app, access to the camera for Android apps, and in-app payment support for Android apps. The beta is only available to registered developers right now, but the release does give us a glimpse as to what to expect once the final version of BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 is released. Opera Mini 7 for feature phones gets social network, news feeds feature Posted: 31 May 2012 01:10 PM PDT Opera has released version 7 of its Opera Mini browser for select feature phones. The big new feature in version 7 is the Smart Page, which provides a one-page summary of news from Facebook and Twitter. Additionally, the Smart Page will suggest other news sites for users to follow. All of the services provided on the Smart Page take advantage of Opera's data compression technology, so users will see less data usage on their mobile phone bill than with other browsers and services. Google Voice gains more call screening, custom greeting capabilities Posted: 31 May 2012 11:26 AM PDT This week, Google added two new features to its Google Voice call routing service. The first allows users to set up custom voice mail messages and greetings for those in their address book, or screen any callers that are not in their address book. The second feature lets Google Voice users screen any anonymous or "unknown" numbers from hitting their phones, instead sending them directly to voice mail. Users can access the new features from the new Groups & Circles tab in the Settings section of their Google Voice accounts. Read the full story here. |
HTC EVO 4G LTE to be available from Sprint starting June 2 Posted: 31 May 2012 10:18 AM PDT Sprint has just announced that the HTC EVO 4G LTE smartphone will be available in stores and at Sprint.com starting on June 2. The EVO 4G LTE was one of the HTC smartphones (along with the One X) that was held up by U.S. Customs while agents investigated whether the phones were in violation of Apple's smartphone patents. Sprint was able to fulfill pre-orders for the phone on May 24, but it had not been able to provide stock in stores or online until the rest of the shipments were cleared by customs. News aggregator Taptu launches HTML5 webapp Posted: 31 May 2012 08:44 AM PDT Taptu, a popular news reading and aggregation service, has launched an HTML5 webapp to go along with the iOS and Android apps that it already has. Users can now access their Taptu accounts and news streams in any capable WebKit browser via the HTML5 webapp, giving them more cross platform compatibility. AT&T lights up 4G LTE service in Cleveland, Ohio Posted: 31 May 2012 08:13 AM PDT AT&T has announced that its 4G LTE service is now available in the Cleveland, Ohio area. The carrier now has LTE service in 39 markets across the U.S. It also claims that its 4G network (including both HSPA+ and LTE services) now covers 260 million U.S. residents. AT&T updates international data plans, offers more data for less money Posted: 31 May 2012 06:40 AM PDT Following Verizon Wireless' adjustments to its international data plans last month, AT&T has also refreshed its data plan options for international travelers. The new plans offer more data for less money, and can be used with any of AT&T's smartphones in over 130 different countries. Starting tomorrow, AT&T customers that are traveling overseas will be able to choose between 120MB of data for $30 per month, 300MB for $60 per month, or 800MB for $120 per month. If users go over their purchased allotment, another 120MB of data will be added to each plan automatically for an additional fee of $30. Compared to the older options where 800MB of international data would cost $199.99 per month, these new plans are considerably more affordable. Read the full story here. |
Verizon pushing Android 4.0.4 update to Google Galaxy Nexus now Posted: 31 May 2012 06:14 AM PDT Verizon Wireless still lists the Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Google Galaxy Nexus as "coming soon," but a number of users are reporting that the update is now available. As revealed earlier this week, the update address a host of bugs in the email and messaging apps, and also improves overall stability for the phone. Those that are impatient and don't want to wait for the notification from Verizon should be able to head to the Software Update section of the Settings app and download the update now. Google Translate for Android updated with ICS interface Posted: 31 May 2012 05:42 AM PDT Google has released a new version of its Translate app for Android devices that offers an updated user interface to match Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The new version also includes support for Esperanto and has text to speech translation for many more languages.
