Images of Samsung Galaxy S III for T-Mobile hit the web, physical home button intact Posted: 01 Jun 2012 02:16 PM PDT The Verge has obtained some very legit looking images of what is supposedly the Samsung Galaxy S III for T-Mobile. What is most interesting about these images is that the T-Mobile version of the phone is shockingly similar to the international version, right down to the physical home key. Apple to feature Facebook integration in iOS 6 says report Posted: 01 Jun 2012 01:31 PM PDT A report from TechCrunch claims that Apple plans to introduce Facebook integration into iOS with the next version of the software, expected to be announced at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference this month. Verizon to upgrade Motorola XOOM tablet to Android 4.0 ICS on June 4 Posted: 01 Jun 2012 12:31 PM PDT Verizon Wireless has just revealed that the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for its version of the Motorola XOOM tablet will be available on Monday, June 4. Users will be able to download the update over-the-air directly to their tablets. The Android 4.0 upgrade for the XOOM includes all of the improvements one would expect from Ice Cream Sandwich, such as improved multitasking, enhanced notification management, and better performance. The update also includes a built-in photo editor that allows user to make basic tweaks to their images. The Wi-Fi version of the Motorola XOOM received its update to Android 4.0 earlier this year. Android 4.0 ICS update for T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II coming June 11 Posted: 01 Jun 2012 12:16 PM PDT T-Mobile has announced through its official Twitter account that the promised update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich will arrive for T-Mobile's version of the Samsung Galaxy S II on June 11. The update includes Samsung's custom user interface, and will be available to users through the KIES desktop software. T-Mobile did not say that it would be made available as an over-the-air upgrade, so it looks as though a manual install through KIES will be the only way to get it. AT&T CEO expects data-only cellphone plans within two years Posted: 01 Jun 2012 11:01 AM PDT During a conference for investors, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson said that he expects to see data-only cellphone plans come to fruition within the next two years. As it stands now, in order to purchase a data plan for a smartphone, most wireless carriers force customers to also carry a voice plan. Stephenson called the transition to data-only plans inevitable, though he did not say exactly when AT&T might deploy data-only plans to its customers. With the proliferation of VoIP services like Skype (and soon VoLTE services), data-only wireless plans would make sense for a large number of users that don't place a lot of voice calls on their phones. Nokia says nano-SIM winner is technically inferior, will still license essential patents Posted: 01 Jun 2012 08:12 AM PDT Following ETSI's decision on the final design of the nano-SIM (or 4FF) standard, Nokia has released a statement claiming that while it feels the chosen design is technically inferior to Nokia's originally proposed design, it is prepared to license the related patents it owns to other manufacturers, which are essential to the standard. The company had earlier threatened to withhold licenses to the patents if ETSI chose Apple's proposed design, which Nokia felt was inferior for a number of reasons. Read the full story here. |
Sharp says it is making thinner, clearer mobile displays Posted: 01 Jun 2012 07:49 AM PDT Sharp announced this week that it is developing thinner and clearer displays to be used in mobile devices. The display maker says that the new screens use less power, and that it will upgrade its line of LCD displays with the new technology in the coming year. The new technology can also be applied to OLED displays, which are already extremely thin, but there are manufacturing hurdles that still need to be overcome with the OLED display production. Samsung acquires wireless chipset maker Nanoradio Posted: 01 Jun 2012 07:34 AM PDT Samsung announced today that it has purchased Nanoradio, a company that specializes in the production of Wi-Fi chipsets for mobile devices. Samsung Galaxy Note gets Android 4.0 ICS update in the UK Posted: 01 Jun 2012 07:03 AM PDT The Samsung Galaxy Note, which recently hit the 7 million sales mark, is now getting its upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in the UK. The update includes Samsung's TouchWiz interface and comes with the Premium Suite of apps designed specifically for the Galaxy Note. Users are able to install the update over-the-air or through the KIES desktop software. Judge says Google's copying of Oracle's APIs was fair use, sees no copyright infringement Posted: 01 Jun 2012 06:43 AM PDT The judge presiding over the spat between Oracle and Google has ruled that the 37 Java APIs used by Google in the Android operating system are not subject to copyright protection and that Google's application of them constituted fair use. This is the latest defeat for Oracle in the on-going case between the two companies, as it was earlier determined that Google also did not violate Oracle's patents with the Android operating system. RIM cleared to use BBM name by Canadian courts Posted: 01 Jun 2012 06:19 AM PDT The Federal Court of Canada has ruled that RIM is clear to continue to use the BBM name to describe its BlackBerry Messenger product. A complaint was brought against RIM late last year by a Canadian broadcasting company named the Bureau of Broadcast Management, which said that it had used the BBM trademark since the 1940s and RIM's use of BBM was causing confusion for consumers. The court determined that RIM's use of BBM was not an infringement because of the different industries in which the two companies operate. Read the full story here. |
ETSI ratifies new nano-SIM standard - 40 percent smaller than micro-SIM Posted: 01 Jun 2012 05:55 AM PDT ETSI, a telecommunication standards organization, has announced that the standard for the new nano-SIM card was ratified in Japan today. The new nano-SIM card is forty percent smaller than the micro-SIM card seen in a number of smartphones and tablets today, and will be used by device manufacturers and carriers across the world. Samsung Galaxy S, Galaxy S II hit combined sales of 50 million units Posted: 01 Jun 2012 05:12 AM PDT Samsung has announced that it has now sold a combined 50 million units of its Galaxy S and Galaxy S II smartphones. The Korean company says that the Galaxy S II has accounted for 28 million units, while the original Galaxy S hit the 24 million mark. The Galaxy S II reached its figure in just 13 months since its release, while the Galaxy S has been on the market since June 2010. Additionally, Samsung claims that it has sold 7 million units of the Galaxy Note, up from the 5 million it reported at the end of March. It is not quite clear from the press release if these sales figures refer to shipments to distributors or sales to end consumers, but we have reached out to Samsung for clarification and will report back what we hear.
