Sprint puts the axe in iDEN device sales Posted: 06 Jun 2012 11:32 AM PDT Sprint has apparently put the nail in the coffin for future iDEN device sales, as the company has removed all iDEN devices from its own website and its pre-paid brand Boost Mobile's site. Sprint announced last month that it would be turning off iDEN service by June of next year, and that it would soon stop offering iDEN devices for sale. The company is transitioning its iDEN users to its new CDMA-based Direct Connect push-to-talk service. It plans to use the freed iDEN spectrum for LTE services by 2014. Read the full story here. |

Google to make offline maps a main feature of Maps for Android soon Posted: 06 Jun 2012 10:08 AM PDT During a press event to announce new services and features in Google Maps, Google revealed that it will make offline maps a main feature of Google Maps for Android in the near future. Offline maps was introduced as an optional "Labs" feature in Google Maps for Android last summer, and allows user to save sections of a map to their phone so that they can view the map without an internet connection. Google says that it will use sensors found in most smartphones, like a compass and accelerometer, to orient the user while they are offline and browsing the map. Google did not say exactly when the new feature would be available, but you can try it out now by enabling the "Pre-cache map area" feature in the Labs section of the current Google Maps app. Read the full story here. |

HTC cuts targets for Q2, blames low sales in Europe, U.S. Posted: 06 Jun 2012 07:52 AM PDT Continued legal battles with Apple aren't HTC's only problems today, as the company announced that it is cutting expectations for its second quarter this year by 13 percent. The company says that now it expects to have revenues of 91 billion TWD (US$3.03 billion) and operating margins of 9 percent, two percent less than previously expected. HTC blames slow sales in Europe and the U.S. and a one-time write down on last year's inventory for the lowered expectations. Sales in May were down to 30 billion TWD, a decline of 26 percent year-over-year. Earlier revenue estimates for Q2 were 105 billion TWD. Heading in to the third and fourth quarters, things are likely to only get more difficult for HTC, as Samsung will have released its Galaxy S III smartphone across the world and Apple is expected to release a new version of the iPhone this fall.
