HTC EVO View 4G gets Android 3.2 Honeycomb update

HTC Flyer owners in Europe have been able to enjoy the Android 3.2 Honeycomb update for their tablets since the beginning of this month, but owners of the EVO View 4G, Sprint's variation of the Flyer, are just now getting the update. As expected, the update brings a new version of HTC's Sense interface, tuned for the Honeycomb environment, and Sprint says that it has included a fix for Google Talk video chat. The carrier does warn that users will need to reset their homescreens and wallpapers after the update, as it will revert them to an out-of-the-box state. EVO Flyer 4G owners can update now by heading to the About Tablet section of the Settings app.

Verizon says Galaxy Nexus update will adjust signal strength indicator

Ever since the Google Galaxy Nexus smartphone for Verizon Wireless was (finally) released last week, users have been reporting poor signal strength with it compared to other LTE devices. Verizon has acknowledged the issue and says a fix is coming, but it might not be the fix that many want to hear.

Sprint sues cable companies over patent infringements

This week Sprint filed lawsuits against Time Warner Cable, Comcast, Cable One, and Cox Communications claiming that the companies infringed upon its patents concerning the transmission of phone calls.

Deutsche Telekom CEO affirms commitment to T-Mobile USA in staff letter

Following the news this week that AT&T has given up on its plans to purchase T-Mobile USA from Deutsche Telekom, Deutsche Telekom CEO René Obermann sent a letter to T-Mobile USA employees affirming the company's commitment to make T-Mobile a success, despite its efforts to sell the division.

Motorola, T-Mobile explain use of Carrier IQ

Last week Sprint, AT&T, Samsung, and HTC responded to Senator Al Franken's request for more information on how they were using Carrier IQ on their customers' phones, and to what extent it was deployed. Yesterday, T-Mobile and Motorola submitted their responses to the letter.

BlackBerry PlayBook gets Angry Birds games, still lacks email and calendar

Remember back in May when RIM made a big announcement that the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet would be getting Angry Birds? Well, that time has finally come. The original version of the Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons, and Angry Birds Rio are now available in the BlackBerry App World for the PlayBook. The PlayBook just might be the last mobile platform to get the Angry Birds franchise (seriously, even Nokia S40 phones have had it for some time now), and it doesn't look like PlayBook owners are getting any break on the price in exchange for their patience, as each version of the app costs a hefty $4.99. Latest Swype beta Android keyboard includes Dragon Dictation

Swype has released a new beta version of its tracing keyboard for Android devices that includes a voice transcription feature that is powered by Dragon Dictation. This new feature is a direct result of Nuance's purchase of Swype earlier this year.

Cricket launches its first 4G LTE market in Arizona

Leap Wireless, owner of Cricket, has announced that its first 4G LTE network has launched. Tucson, Arizona is the first market to receive access to Leap's new LTE network, and customers can purchase a Huawei USB modem for use with it. LTE service plans start at $50 per month for 5GB of data at speeds up to 3Mbps, and go up to $60 per month, which offers the same amount of data, but faster, 6Mbps speeds. Leap says the next market to get LTE service will be Nogales, Arizona and the company will continue to expand its footprint over the coming months. Cricket will offer smartphones and tablets with LTE connectivity options in the future.

Amazon updates Kindle app for iPhone, iPad

Amazon has released a new version of its Kindle app for iOS devices that adds new features for both the iPhone and iPad versions of the app. Version 2.9 adds access to over 400 magazines and newspapers on the iPad that are also available on the Kindle Fire tablet. Additionally, the iPad app now has the ability to read print replica textbooks, complete with rich formatting and layouts and notations. The iPhone version gains the ability to open documents that were emailed to the Send-to-Kindle email address, as well as PDF support and new library organization. Kindle for iOS is free and available in the iTunes App Store now.

Sony Ericsson pegs Android 4.0 ICS updates for March/April release

Sony Ericsson has been one of the most vocal and transparent manufacturers of Android smartphones when it comes to its plans to upgrade its handsets to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and today it released more details as to when users can expect to see the updates. Putting a more solid date on the matter, Sony Ericsson pegs the release time for the upgrades to be March or April of 2012.

Nokia kills Symbian name, will launch Belle upgrade in February

The end of Symbian is upon us - well, the name Symbian at least. Nokia has officially changed the name of the new version of its non-Microsoft operating system to Nokia Belle, dropping the Symbian moniker entirely. Rest assured though, it is the same operating system underneath its new name. Nokia has also released more information as to when the new Nokia Belle update will roll out to existing smartphones.

HP Pre 3 gets updated to webOS 2.2.4

Those few owners of HP Pre 3 smartphones received a treat recently, as HP has delivered a software update for the device that brings it up to webOS 2.2.4. Not much is included in the changelog for the update, but HP says it contains "a variety of software improvements." The update can be downloaded from the System Updates app on the phone.

HTC CEO repeats that company has solution for Apple patent infringement

HTC CEO Peter Chou has restated the company's announcement that it already has a software update for its devices that addresses the Apple patent that it was found to be infringing upon. HTC is also apparently testing new devices that do not infringe upon Apple's patents. Chou said that Apple's legal attacks were "unfair" and that HTC and Google would be working together in the future to make sure that Android phones do not violate any other patents. It is not clear as to when the update will be available for the smartphones that were found to be infringing, but the International Trade Commission set a ban on the import of HTC devices for April 19, 2012, so we expect it to be delivered at some point before then.

ITC rules that Motorola violates one of Microsoft's smartphone patents

The International Trade Commission has released a preliminary decision against Motorola in Microsoft's patent complaint against the company. The panel determined that Motorola was in violation of one of the seven patents that Microsoft cited with its Android smartphones.

Verizon facing another data outage across the country

Twenty-eleven has been a rough year for Verizon Wireless' usually rock-solid wireless network, as it has faced numerous outages for both its 4G LTE and 3G CDMA data services. Today there are reports of yet another outage, with users across the county saying they are unable to connect to Verizon's data network. It seems that both coasts are affected. Here in New York state I am able to connect to Verizon's network without issue, while Michael, a couple of hours south in Pennsylvania, has no data access. Your mileage may vary. Verizon has yet to release an official statement on the outage, but we will update as soon as it does.

Google now activates 700,000 Android devices every day

According to Andy Rubin, head of mobile operations at Google, the search giant is now activating 700,000 Android devices each and every day. This is a significant increase from the 550,000 per day that was reported back in July. It is quite obvious that Android continues to grow at a staggering rate, and it doesn't seem like things will be slowing down any time soon for the green robot operating system.
