Apple gets Australian courts to extend ban on Galaxy Tab 10.1

It had appeared earlier this week that Samsung had finally won a victory against Apple in Australia when a court ruled that the ban on the sale of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet was unfair and ordered it to be lifted today, December 2. As it turns out, Apple's legal team was rather quick on its feet, and just before the injunction was set to be lifted, Apple was able to get it extended for another week.

Vodafone UK now carrying Google Galaxy Nexus ICS smartphone

Vodafone UK has announced that it is now offering the Google Galaxy Nexus smartphone to its customers. The Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich-equipped Galaxy Nexus has been on sale in the UK since November 17, but it was not available for Vodafone customers. The carrier is offering the smartphone for free with two-year agreements and plans that cost 41 GBP per month or more, though you can choose a lower rate plan and pay an up-front fee for the phone if you choose. Vodafone may be late to the UK Galaxy Nexus party, but it beat all of North America, so that's worth something, right?

AT&T's 4G LTE network live in New York City

While attending an event for the LG Nitro HD for AT&T, we noticed that AT&T's 4G LTE network was live and functioning to the tune of 20Mbps downloads. While speeds are sure to drop once consumers start making real use of it, we were still impressed since Verizon's network rarely touched upon 15Mbps in our tests when that network first was activated and equally under utilized. For the record, upload speeds were averaging a speedy 7Mbps after a dozen or so tests, which is rock solid. So while AT&T has yet to officially announce that LTE is available in NYC, let us assure you that it is.

Kik's cross-platform messaging app debuts on Symbian

Cross-platform messaging app Kik appears to be intent on being available on every smartphone operating system out there, as it has just debuted a new version of the app for the Symbian platform. Kik is already available for iOS, Android, BlackBerry, and Windows Phone. With Symbian added to the mix, Kik says it is now available on over 95 percent of smartphones that are on the market.

Verizon Samsung Fascinate users seeing Android 2.3 Gingerbread update

Users of Samsung's Fascinate Android smartphone for Verizon Wireless are reporting that Google's Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread update is coming in over-the-air to their handsets. The Gingerbread OS update can be initiated by going to the device's Settings app, and then jumping into Software Update and Check New. The new update adds improved power management and battery monitoring and a large number of general bug fixes and enhancements.

Verizon to launch two Motorola DROID Xyboard tablets this month

According to a report from CNET, Verizon Wireless intends to launch two Motorola tablets this month. The two tablets are both Android-based and are known as the XOOM 2 and XOOM 2 Media Edition overseas, though Verizon intends to brand them as the DROID Xyboard.

FCC bites back at AT&T over comments about merger report

The tit for tat between the Federal Communications Commission and AT&T over the carrier's proposal to purchase T-Mobile and the FCC's subsequent report continues, though this time it is taking place on social networks. In response to AT&T's vitriol-filled remarks that were a response to the FCC's analysis report released to the public this week, Joel Gurin, chief of the Consumer and Governmental Affairs Bureau at the FCC posted on the agency's official Twitter account that he was "Deeply concerned about @ATTPublicPolicy J. Cicconi comments today re: FCC's role in protecting US consumers." Since it seems that neither party will give up the last word, we expect that AT&T might offer a further rebuttal in the near future.

Apple says it stopped using Carrier IQ in iOS 5

After traces of Carrier IQ's software had been found in iOS dating all the way back to iOS 3, Apple has finally issued a statement on the matter, claiming that while it did use the software in the past, it no longer supports it and plans to remove it with a future software update to iOS devices.

Sprint says Carrier IQ is used for network and device performance analysis, nothing else

Sprint has finally revealed what it actually uses the Carrier ID software that is installed on most of its smartphones for. Denying that it can read messages or view photos and videos captured or sent by users, Sprint claims that it uses the data collected by Carrier ID to analyze and improve network performance.

AT&T responds to FCC report, claims it is biased, one-sided

AT&T has already made it quite clear that it was unhappy about the Federal Communications Commission's release of a report on the carrier's proposal to purchase T-Mobile, but today it has released a long rebuttal on the report itself. Within AT&T's statement is a fair amount of vitriol and anger towards the FCC, as it tries to make its case that the FCC's report was not fair and didn't look at all of the facts presented.

Amazon Kindle Fire software update breaks root access; hackers remain undeterred

Unsurprisingly, the software update that Amazon pushed to the Kindle Fire this week has fixed the exploit that allowed hackers root access to the tablet, which gave them the ability to install Google's own Android Market and other apps on the tablet. This didn't deter hackers for too long, however, as another exploit has been found and enterprising users can actually use the same tools to root the device as they did before. Reportedly, enabling root access will delete the Android Market and third-party keyboards that might have been installed, but those can be easily reinstalled when root is achieved again. Other third-party apps seem to be unaffected. It probably won't be long before Amazon figures out a way to fix this new exploit, but chances are, hackers will just find another method to shoehorn unapproved apps onto the Kindle Fire.

Sprint signs new deal with Clearwire for 4G WiMAX, LTE networks

Sprint and Clearwire have renewed their long-standing relationship, as the two companies have signed new network access agreements that cover both current WiMAX networks and future LTE networks. Under the new agreement, Sprint will pay $926 million for unlimited access to Clearwire's WiMAX network in 2012 and 2013 and will continue to sell WiMAX handsets throughout 2012, supporting them throughout their two-year contracts. Clearwire has committed to keeping its WiMAX network active through 2015. Looking forward to an LTE future, Sprint has agreed to pay Clearwire $350 million in a series of pre-payments over two years for LTE network access if Clearwire can build its LTE network out enough by June 2013. Clearwire has said that it wants to deploy a TDD-LTE network, but it needs $600 million in capital to do so. The fresh infusion of cash from Sprint should only help Clearwire reach its goal.

Sharp's new camera sensor for phones fixes your shakes

Sharp has announced a new camera sensor for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets that features a high resolution and built-in image stabilization. The 12.1 megapixel CMOS chip measures a mere 5.47mm tall, making it the smallest camera sensor with integrated image stabilization on the market. The sensor is back-illuminated for better low-light performance, and can be paired with an f/2.5 lens. It also supports full 1080p HD video recording. Sharp says that mass production on the new chip will begin next month and it will be delivered to device manufacturers shortly after.

White Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket hits AT&T on December 4

Following up on the white Galaxy S II Skyrocket that was spotted on Samsung's website a few days ago, the manufacturer has revealed that the phone will hit AT&T's network on December 4 - in time for the holidays. The white model features the same specifications as the black version, including a 1.5GHz, dual-core Qualcomm processor, a 4.52-inch, Super AMOLED Plus display, and that all-important 4G LTE connectivity. You can expect to pay $249.99 with a new two-year contract when the white version goes on sale. Japan's NTT DoCoMo denies reports of iPhone launch plans

Yesterday a rumor circulated by Japanese newspaper Nikkei Business claimed that Apple intends to release LTE versions of the iPad and iPhone next year with Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo. This would be the first time that DoCoMo would carry the iPhone or iPad, though other Japanese carriers (KDDI and Softbank) already offer the devices. NTT DoCoMo has come out and flatly denied the rumors, claiming that it has not reached an agreement with Apple to carry the iPhone or iPad at this time. While it is highly likely that Apple will release LTE versions of the iPad and iPhone at some point in the future, it just might not be with NTT DoCoMo.

Another Apple iPhone burns up; this time in Brazil

Following the combustible iPhone that erupted into flame on an Australian airliner last week, reports are coming out of Brazil that another iPhone has spontaneously caught on fire. This time the afflicted device was plugged in overnight and was less than a foot from the owner's head when it ignited. The phone started shooting sparks and smoking, rustling the owner from sleep. Brazilian media say the owner escaped any injury, but was suitably shaken from the event. Reportedly, the iPhone in question was purchased in France and imported into Brazil, leaving the owner without a local warranty to pursue for reparations.
