Samsung wins in Australia against Apple, Galaxy Tab 10.1 injunction lifted

Today in Australia, Samsung scored a victory against Apple in the global patent war the two firms have been waging against each other. An Australian court has lifted the ban on sales of Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet in that country.

Cloud storage provider Box has released new versions of its app for the iPhone and the iPad that feature improved performance and new features. Box says that both apps feature all new code that should make them faster and more stable than before.

Amazon Student mobile app eases the pain of trading in textbooks

Amazon has introduced a new app for the iOS and Android platforms that is designed to make life as a student easier. The new Amazon Student app features a barcode scanner to check prices on anything, including school supplies, and to find out how much a particular textbook is worth through Amazon's trade-in program. Amazon is also offering six months of its Amazon Prime service for free to students that qualify and sign up. The Amazon Student app is free and available now in the Android Market, Amazon Appstore, or iTunes App Store.

Google enters news reader space with Currents app for iOS, Android

Google has introduced its own version of a mobile news reader app with Currents, available for iOS and Android devices. Currents offers a similar experience to Flipboard and the dozens of other mobile news reader apps available, and provides web content in a format that is easy to read on a mobile device, such as a smartphone or tablet.

Symbian Belle updates expected to roll-out early next year

The software updates for the new Symbian Belle operating system from Nokia were expected to be made available to existing devices before the end of this year, though Nokia never actually committed to that timeframe. Now, it seems that Nokia has officially said that the updates will arrive for the Nokia N8, E7, X7, C6-01, C7, Oro, E6, and 500 smartphones in early 2012. The Belle update brings a refreshed user interface including a new notification bar and resizable widgets. The operating system comes pre-installed on the Nokia 603, 700, and 701 smartphones, already available on the market.

Google pulls YouMail app from Android Market at T-Mobile's behest

Google has apparently removed YouMail, a voicemail service and app, from the Android Market due to a complaint about the app lodged by T-Mobile. T-Mobile argued that the YouMail app was causing "adverse network disruption," which prompted Google to remove it from all versions of the Android Market.

Samsung's efforts to ban Apple iPhone 4S in France shot down

Samsung has suffered another defeat to Apple in the world's courts, as a French court has denied the company's request to ban sales of the iPhone 4S in the country. Samsung had claimed that the iPhone 4S was in violation of its wireless communications patents, and requested that the smartphone be pulled off of store shelves.

Verizon claims 4G LTE service has been restored

Following a 4G LTE outage that lasted the better part of a full day, Verizon Wireless now says that the service has been restored and that users should be able to connect to the LTE network and enjoy its ridiculous speeds once again. Verizon did not say what caused the outage, but it confirmed that its "network operations team resolved a technical issue." The outage prevented users from utilizing the faster speeds of the LTE network, but it did not stop phone calls or text messages from going through, said Verizon. Users pointed out that was not entirely the case, though, as many complained that the carrier's 3G network was not operational for them either. This is the second major outage for Verizon's LTE network this year, with the earlier one happening in April.

Google Galaxy Nexus makes landfall in the Great White North

Those who have been waiting for the Google Galaxy Nexus to come to America have had quite a ride of emotions over the past few weeks, as Verizon Wireless has yet to announce an official release date for the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone, despite rumors pointing to a number of possible dates. Their neighbors to the north don't have to wait any longer though, as Canadian carriers Bell and Virgin Mobile have started carrying the Galaxy Nexus as of today. Both carriers are asking $159 and a signature on a new three-year contract in exchange for the device, so that Android 4.0 goodness won't come cheap (time is money, after all). Rogers is expected to carry the phone at some point in the future as well, but it has not announced when it will.

Windows Phone 7.5 gets unofficial Pandora app

One of the biggest complaints I have had with the Windows Phone 7.5 platform has been the lack of apps from big-name developers. While the platform is growing, and more apps are showing up every day, some notable ones are still missing. Thankfully, a third-party developer has taken up the mantle in the case of the missing Pandora app and has released the platform's first third-party Pandora client.

HP to offer discounted TouchPad tablets one last time

If you were unable to snag one of the heavily-discounted HP TouchPad tablets during HP's firesale earlier this year, it looks like you will have one last opportunity to get one. According to a report by TechCrunch, HP will be selling the 16GB and 32GB versions of the tablet through eBay at the $99 and $149 prices for one day only. The only catch is that these particular units are expected to be refurbished models, not brand-new.

Sprint releases firmware update for Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch

Sprint has released a firmware update for the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch smartphone. The update addresses issues the phone has with losing connectivity when connected to the 4G WiMAX or 3G CDMA networks. It also is supposed to fix the problem of the 4G hotspot disconnecting when the user is on a call. We experienced the cellular connectivity issues first hand when we reviewed the Epic 4G Touch in September, so it is nice to see Sprint finally addressing the issue. Users will be notified when the update is ready to be downloaded and installed.
