Half a billion to use phone as train ticket by 2015: Juniper

New forecasts from Juniper Research predict that half a billion people worldwide will be using their cellphones as a metro, subway, or bus tickets by the year 2015. Juniper claims that the momentum growing behind NFC just may propel the technology into the transportation industry, as metro authorities begin to investigate the next-best technology for contactless payment systems. As of yet, most countries are using barcodes or SMS ticketing. Though it will be a couple years before we see NFC-enabled devices as the norm, the convenience of contactless payment systems could make mobile ticketing a ubiquitous form of payment rather quickly.

Twitter for Android gets minor update

Twitter has pushed an out an update to its official Android client, fixing some bugs and improving the UI. Version 2.0.2 now displays search results in a tabbed view, has an option to change the font size, can delete messages, can launch links directly from a Tweet, and shows a user's Tweet count in the profile view. The app also has improved loading of avatars, better trash collection, and now uses SSL for secure connections. There are other bugs and fixes throughout the app, as well. Twitter for Android is free and in the Android Market now. It requires Android 2.1 or higher.

Amazon counter-sues Apple over Amazon's "Appstore" name

Amazon has filed a counter-suit against Apple in response to Apple's legal attack on Amazon's use of the name "Appstore" for its mobile application storefront, which Apple claims infringes on its "App Store" copyright.

Qik for Android updated with full video chat capabilities

Qik has updated its application for Android smartphones with full video calling capabilities and more. Previously, the video-chatting capability was only available pre-loaded on certain Android devices or through certain carriers, such as T-Mobile, while the freely available version of the app in the Android Market lacked video-calling.

Twitter: Our focus is on mobile

At the Venture Beat Mobile Summit, Twitter vice president of engineering Mike Abbott revealed that the microblogging service will be focusing on mobile along with discovery and relevance. Abbott said the three areas are related, as Twitter can help users find relevant things that are happening around them. Twitter claims over 40 percent of posts are now coming from mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, so it is not a big surprise to see the company focus on this area for growth. Abbott promised that users would see a lot of advances in this area in the future.

RadioShack points fingers at T-Mobile during contract dispute

RadioShack seems to be pointing a finger at T-Mobile as the retailer's net profits continues to tumble downward. With its three-pronged business strategy (mobility, consumer electronics, and signature), RadioShack posted a $35.1 million first-quarter net profit, a rather large drop from the same period last year, when RadioShack saw a $50.1 million net profit. Net sales for the gadget retailer are up 2.1 percent from the year-ago quarter, at $1.06 billion.

T-Mobile suspends Bobsled less than a week into its life

T-Mobile has announced that it is temporarily suspending its new Bobsled Facebook VoIP service that was announced with great fanfare last week. The reasoning behind the suspension appears to be that Bobsled is not differentiated enough from Facebook's core services and Facebook had issues with the design of the application. No word as to when the service would be reinstated.

ZTE projects sales of 12 million smartphones, tablets in 2011

ZTE, a Chinese manufacturer of mobile devices, has projected that it will sell 12 million "smart devices," including smartphones and tablets, in 2011. ZTE's goal is to make it to the top three of tablet manufacturers in the world and number 1 for Chinese companies. The company will also focus on establishing its brand in western markets as opposed to selling unbranded products through manufacturers.

LG to build its own ARM based smartphone processors

LG has announced that it will license ARM processor technology for future smartphone and tablet devices. The Cortex-A15 and Cortex-A9 processors will be used in LG devices along with the Mali-T604 GPU. LG says that this agreement will allow the company to compete with other manufacturers who already have their own processor and GPU designs.

Android smartphones to get video calling at Google I/O?

A tweet from a Samsung employee suggests that Android smartphones such as the Nexus S will get native video calling capabilities through Google Talk at Google's I/O developer conference next month. Google Talk on the tablet version of Android, 3.0 Honeycomb, has such capabilities, but smartphones have had to rely on third-party apps so far. The video chat capability is rumored to arrive with version 2.3.4 of the Android platform. We should know for sure soon enough as Google I/O is scheduled to take place the first week of May.

Apple appears ready to offer white iPhone 4 on April 27

According to rumors and leaked screen shots from a number of retailers world wide, Apple finally appears ready to offer smartphone buyers the long-awaited white iPhone 4 tomorrow, April 27. The white iPhone has been delayed due to what Apple called manufacturering problems, but Apple'sPhil Schiller promised recently that the white iPhone 4 would be available this spring. Well, it's spring now, and the phone appears to be coming. It remains unclear as to which carrier, or carriers, will offer the white iPhone, which was recently spotted sporting T-Mobile 3G support.
