Those in the special club can plunk down $199.99 with a new two-year agreement to get the world's first dual-touchscreen Android smartphone. Apple caught in class-action suit over in-app purchases on iPhone Posted: 15 Apr 2011 10:45 AM PDT Apple has been hit with a class-action lawsuit that cites the in-app purchase system on the iPhone was flawed and allowed children to rack up a great amount of unauthorized charges. Apple has since fixed the issue by requiring a password for every purchase, but that hasn't stopped the lawsuit from moving forward. Read the full story here. |

AT&T, T-Mobile plan to file FCC paperwork next week Posted: 15 Apr 2011 09:20 AM PDT AT&T and T-Mobile USA have confirmed plans to file paperwork regarding their proposed $39 billion merger with the Federal Communications Commission next week. "We plan to file our public interest statement at the FCC around April 21," said Michael Balmoris of AT&T in an email. Since the announcement of this merger, everyone from state senators to FCC members to the New York Attorney General have been up in arms opposing the deal. Along with an FCC review that ensures the deal is in the public interest, AT&T filed for a Department of Justice review last Friday, which will ensure the carriers' proposition does not violate antitrust law. The review process could take over a year, and if approval is granted, 80 percent of the U.S. wireless industry would be concentrated between AT&T/T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless. Korean search firms cry foul at Google on Android Posted: 15 Apr 2011 07:35 AM PDT Two of South Korea's top Internet search companies, Daum and NHN Corp, have filed complaints with the Korea Fair Trade Commission, claiming that Google is destroying the competition within South Korea's mobile search industry by pre-loading its search engine on local smartphones that run Android OS. Sony Ericsson to launch MW600 Stereo Bluetooth Headset Posted: 15 Apr 2011 07:18 AM PDT Sony Ericsson recently announced the launch of the MW600 Stereo Bluetooth Headset, which not only offers Bluetooth connectivity to the user's smartphone, but also gives the user wireless access to FM radio stations. The new headset features an OLED display that shows the incoming caller's phone number, the time, station identification, and program information for the headset's FM radio, and control options for the headset. LG possibly looking at MeeGo for smartphones Posted: 15 Apr 2011 06:37 AM PDT It appears that LG might be looking to capitalize on Nokia's move away from the MeeGo operating system. This week LG joined a MeeGo working group that is tasked with creating a version of the Linux-based OS for smartphones. Reuters quotes a MeeGo technical steering group member, Intel's Valtteri Halla, as saying that Nokia's departure is "opening opportunities for the others to come in. Discussions are taking place. You'll see things coming out this year, pretty soon." Halla previously worked for Nokia, but left the company after Nokia announced its deal with Microsoft to use Windows Phone 7. Microsoft updates Windows Phone 7 spec with new processors Posted: 15 Apr 2011 06:13 AM PDT Yesterday at its MIX 2011 event, Microsoft revealed a slightly updated chassis spec for its Windows Phone 7 smartphone platform. Microsoft is sticking to the WVGA screen resolution requirement, but has added support for Qualcomm's new MSM7X30 and MSM8x55 chipsets and has made a gyroscope sensor an optional component. It's worth noting that both of the supported chipsets feature Qualcomm's newer Adreno 205 graphics processor, which is also found in Sony Ericsson's Xperia PLAY and arc smartphones.
