Touchscreen market exploding, could reach $9 billion this year Posted: 25 Apr 2011 09:20 AM PDT Despite the decline in PC sales over the past year, touchscreen chipmakers Cypress Semiconducter and Synaptics Inc have bolstered profits, and Cypress Semiconductor has even gone so far as to forecast that its touchscreen business will double in 2011. It all started 15 years ago when Synaptics put a touchpad on Apple's MacBook. Since then, the touchscreen market is expected to have a $9 billion value over the course of the next few years, as we see touchscreens expand from smartphones and tablets to cameras, GPS devices and car dashboards. "This is an emerging market with very little competition," said Wedbush analyst Betsy Van Hees. "So there is hardly any pricing pressures on the company's Truetouch line of products, which is driving the growth." When coupled with Atmel Corp, Cypress and Synaptics hold 90 percent of the touchscreen chip market, according to analysts. Read the full story here. |
