ACLU questions Michigan state police over cell phone download devices Posted: 22 Apr 2011 05:14 AM PDT The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has requested that the Michigan State police provide documentation as to the police force uses of devices that are capable of downloading information such as text messages, call logs, address books, and other pieces of information from suspects' cellphones. No Hulu for BlackBerry PlayBook Posted: 22 Apr 2011 04:45 AM PDT It seems that Hulu has caught on to the Flash-enabled browsing capabilities of the BlackBerry PlayBook and has blocked the device from viewing any content, much as the company has done with Android devices previously. PlayBook users are now presented with a pop-up window when they browse to hulu.com that informs them that the BlackBerry browser is not supported for viewing content. As in the past, Hulu allows browsing of the lists of shows, but will not allow users to play any video. Read the full story here. |

Verizon up to half a million LTE subscribers Posted: 21 Apr 2011 12:08 PM PDT Tucked away in Verizon Wireless' first-quarter financial reports today was the revelation that the network now has 500,000 LTE subscribers, 260,000 of which come from the HTC ThunderBolt smartphone. Nokia to begin lay-off talks next week Posted: 21 Apr 2011 11:55 AM PDT Nokia, the world's largest mobile phone manufacturer is expected to start lay-off talks next week in Finland, according to a statement made by labor union officials on Thursday. "Next week they will begin the lay-off talks," said Pertti Porokari from the Union of Professional Engineers in Finland. "Today the staff and the unions have been told that all contracts will continue until the end of the year," he said. Porokari also mentioned that he had concerns that Nokia would cut over 1,000 jobs in Finland. Nokia announced the finalized agreement between the company and Microsoft to produce Windows Phone 7 devices today, which is what will prompt the layoffs as Nokia will not need as many in-house software developers. Verizon lights up six more LTE markets today Posted: 21 Apr 2011 11:41 AM PDT Following the announcement from April 19, Verizon Wireless has lit up six more LTE networks today. The new markets include Clarksville, Tenn.; Hopkinsville, Ky.; Cleveland, Tenn.; Columbia and Hilton Head, S.C.; Wilmington, N.C.; and the Greater Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania. Verizon pleased with HTC ThunderBolt launch, sales so far Posted: 21 Apr 2011 11:14 AM PDT Verizon Wireless released its quarterly results today and amid the sales figures were some quotes regarding the success of the HTC ThunderBolt, Verizon's first 4G LTE smartphone. Verizon sold 260,000 units of the big guy, prompting CFO Fran Shammo to say: "From a pace perspective we are very pleased with the HTC handset launch." Shammo also said that Verizon would be launching three more LTE smartphones by the end of the second quarter. We imagine the just-announced Droid Charge from Samsung is one of them. Germany chimes in on Apple iPhone user data Posted: 21 Apr 2011 10:51 AM PDT Following the request by U.S. Senator Al Franken for more details regarding the location data tracking done by Apple's iPhone, Germany has asked Apple to clear up "a string of open questions" in regards to user data stored on iOS devices. "Apple must reveal where, for how long, and for what purpose the data is saved, who has access to it, and how it is protecting against unauthorized access," said ministry spokesman Holger Eichele. Germany is known for chasing down companies with regards to user data. Senator asks Steve Jobs about Apple iOS location tracking Posted: 21 Apr 2011 09:47 AM PDT U.S. Senator Al Franken has submitted a letter to Steve Jobs of Apple asking for details on the location tracking that has been discovered in his company's iPhone and 3G-connected iPad tablets. Senator Franken points out that the unencrypted nature of the data raises even further privacy and security issues. The senator is asking for, among other things, an explanation as to why Apple is compiling the data, by which method(s) the location information is obtained, and why it is unencrypted. Twitter Unfollowed Me app preys on the vain Posted: 21 Apr 2011 09:15 AM PDT A number of Twitter users have fallen prey to the Unfollowed Me rogue application sent out by scammers and are inadvertently spreading along the application to their followers. Similar to the Facebook "view your stalkers" scam, the Unfollowed Me application lures in Twitter users by promising to give them access to the users who have unfollowed them, according to the Sophos Naked Security blog. Verizon readying dual-mode global iPhone Posted: 21 Apr 2011 09:11 AM PDT In a conference call this morning. Verizon Communications management remarked to analysts that the next version of Apple's iPhone is being classified as a "world phone," meaning it will work on the GSM and UMTS networks used in most parts of the world. During the call, Verizon CFO Fran Shammo was asked about the company's slow ARPU growth in the first quarter, when the iPhone was introduced by the carrier. Growth in Q1 was just 2.2 percent, where as in the fourth quarter of last year, Verizon saw 2.5 percent growth. She responded by saying that a fluctuation will occur once Apple releases its next product, since Verizon will not only be on par with its competitors straight from launch, but will also be providing a global device. Verizon's iPhone 4, based on the CDMA network, does not have the same breadth of coverage as the GSM standard used by AT&T in its iPhone, which Apple sells across the globe. The agreement also provides satellite coverage for those who do not live in areas with terrestrial coverage. This will provide Cellular South, a regional carrier based out of Mississippi, with nationwide access to a 4G LTE network. Apple iPhone sales skyrocket in China Posted: 21 Apr 2011 08:17 AM PDT It would look as though the most populated country in the world has also become the fastest growing market for Apple's iPhone. In Wednesday's conference call, Apple COO Tim Cook said that in the first three months of 2011, iPhone sales in "Greater China" skyrocketed by almost 250 percent from that of the same time last year, bringing Apple's China revenues in the first fiscal half to a little under $5 billion. That's an increase of four times from that of 2010. That $5 billion in China-generated revenue represents a hefty 10 percent of Apple's overall revenue, said Cook in the conference call. China signs off on Nokia Siemens, Motorola deal Posted: 21 Apr 2011 08:13 AM PDT According to Bloomberg, Nokia Siemens Networks has received approval from the Chinese government to acquire network and technology assets from Motorola Solutions. Since the suit between Motorola and China's Huawei had been settled, Chinese government approval was the only major barrier left that prevented the deal from closing. The Windows Phone 7 system is capable of receiving over-the-air updates, much like Android, but Microsoft has yet to utilize it for anything other than a notification that an update is available. T-Mobile UK lists four new Android smartphones for summer launches Posted: 21 Apr 2011 05:56 AM PDT T-Mobile's UK website has seen a few new additions in the form of four new Android smartphones. With its powerful dual-core 1.2GHz processor, the Samsung Galaxy S II, which will also be made available by other British operators, will hit T-Mobile's stores in June. And that's not all T-Mobile has in store for June, as the social-centric HTC ChaCha smartphone and LG's Optimus 3D will also be hitting T-Mobile around that time. The site also lists the LG Optimus Black as available in May. In July, UK customers will be able to buy the Android 2.3 Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo.
