HTC ThunderBolt having 4G issues, fix on its way

Users of HTC's new 4G LTE smartphone, the ThunderBolt, have been complaining of connection issues when using the phone on a 4G network. Specifically, the phone will drop its data connection in use, and then reconnected within 5 to 10 seconds. It will repeatedly do this while trying to use the phone on 4G, rendering the data services near useless. Verizon Wireless has acknowledged the issue in its support forums and says there is a firmware fix on the way that will resolve the problem. Unfortunately, Verizon did not give a date as to when the fix will be distributed to users, so ThunderBolt owners that are experiencing the issue are going to have to tough it out for now.

Orange, T-Mobile UK to offer HTC Sensation starting in June

Pocket-Lint has confirmed with both Orange and T-Mobile UK that both carriers will offer HTC's newly announced Sensation smartphone. The Sensation is a 4.3-inch touchscreen behemoth that offers a dual-core 1.2GHz processor under its hood to run Google's Android 2.3 operating system. No word yet on pricing or availability.

HTC Sensation on sale with Vodafone in May

Vodafone will offer the HTC Sensation Android 2.3 smartphone starting in mid-May, ahead of many other UK networks. The Android-powered Sensation was unveiled at a press event in London yesterday and offers users a massive 4.3-inch touchscreen display, a rear facing 8MP camera and camcorder with HD support, as well as a user facing camera for video chats, and more. The handset also features HTC Watch, a video streaming and rental service that hosts a plethora of movies and television shows. Pricing has yet to be announced.

RIM opens BlackBerry trade up program to Canada

RIM has decided to show its home country the same love that it has given the U.S. by allowing Canadians to trade in their current BlackBerry for credit towards a new one. Depending on condition, users can get up to $120 toward the purchase of a new BlackBerry. Currently, the BlackBerries eligible for trade-in include the BlackBerry Pearl, BlackBerry Curve, BlackBerry Bold, BlackBerry Storm, BlackBerry Tour, BlackBerry 8700, or BlackBerry 8800 Series smartphones. Customers can head to RIM's Trade Up site to apply for their credit.

Skype updated to improve mobile video calling

Skype has updated its free chat and video calling software to v5.3 and according to the company, now offers better video quality during calls with mobile devices. Other improvements and fixes include users presence icons on collapsed contact profile cards, conversation topic editing button on the conversation header, and if a mobile phone number is added to a profile, Skype will automatically switch to SMS entry if an SMS fails due to lack of phone number when a mobile number is added to a profile.

Adobe has issued a security advisory for its Flash Player 10.2 plugin for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Android operating systems. There is a critical vulnerability that could allow an attacker to take control of a particular system.

Huawei introduces Folded Leaf concept phone

Huawei has introduced a concept phone at the 2011 Salone del Mobile Furniture Fair in Milan that is designed to offer a simplified mobile experience. Designed in tandem with Stockholm-based design studio Claesson Koivisto Rune (CKR), the Folded Leaf concept takes its cues from nature.

T-Mobile 4G Mobile Hotspot available April 13

T-Mobile has officially taken the wraps off of its 4G Mobile Hotspot that was originally announced at CTIA 2011 earlier this year. The 4G Mobile Hotspot is HSPA+ enabled and capable of achieving 21Mbps download speeds. Up to five Wi-Fi enabled devices can be connected at one time.

Samsung Intercept for Virgin Mobile finally receiving Android 2.2

Samsung's Intercept Android smartphone for Virgin Mobile is finally receiving an Android 2.2 Froyo update. The update is being pushed to users now and can be done over-the-air. Users should receive a notification on their phones alerting them that the update is ready to be installed. Android 2.2 Froyo came out for the Sprint version of the Intercept back in December, but Virgin Mobile users have been left waiting for it to arrive for them. Android 2.2 brings improved system performance as well as Active Sync and Bluetooth enhancements.

Angry Birds takes home two Appy Awards

Angry Birds by Rovio took home the best game app and the main award for best app of the year last night at London's Appy Awards. Over 30,000 votes were tallied for the 50 nominated apps across 10 different categories, and Angry Birds, Facebook, Amazon, and Google Maps were among the winners. "It's been just amazing," said Oona Hilkamo, a Rovio employee. "First of all winning the public vote for best game and then afterwards the judges decided for us to be the app of the year. It's been a great year for us." AT&T updates data plans for pre-paid GoPhones

AT&T has updated its data plan offerings for pre-paid GoPhones. Users can choose between three bundle packages that offer 10MB for $5, 100MB for $15, or 500MB for $25. Each package must be added to a voice plan and needs to be renewed monthly. Customers can also opt for pay-per-use data that now offers 5kb for $0.01 versus the 1kb that was previously offered for the same price.

ASUS Eee Pad Transformer tablet available for pre-order in UK

Amazon UK has listed the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet for pre-order, placing the price at 379 GBP (US$620). The docking keyboard kit can be had bundled with the tablet for a total of 429 GBP (US$702). The Eee Pad Transformer is powered by a dual-core Tegra 2 processor from NVIDIA, clocked at 1 GHz. It features a 10.1-inch screen with 1280 x 800 pixels of resolution and a full 1GB of RAM. Amazon UK expects the Transformer to ship on April 18.

Microsoft owns 30 percent of U.S. search between Bing and Yahoo

Just on the heels of Microsoft's launch of the Bing iPad app, new research shows that Microsoft snagged 30 percent of the U.S. search market share in March, with 14 percent of that coming from Bing.com and another 16 percent coming from Yahoo! Search, now powered by Bing. Bing.com and Yahoo! Search grew 6 and 5 percent, respectively, from February to March.

RIM releases Twitter for BlackBerry 1.1 with new features

Research In Motion has just announced that Twitter for BlackBerry 1.1 is now out of beta and will make its official debut on the BlackBerry App World within the next 24 hours. The update features some updated Twitter branding and language support and also adds the ability to tag tweets with a location and support for push notices of @mentions. The application will auto-complete #topics, as well, and will also note tweets that you've retweeted in your timeline.

Three UK announced today that it will offer HTC's latest smartphone, the Sensation, to its customers. The new HTC Sensation is a slab shaped device that sports a massive 4.3-inch touchscreen display, a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, an 8 megapixel camera with HD video support, and HTC's Sense UI. Pricing and availability have yet to be announced by the carrier.

Bloomberg Businessweek launches iPad app

It seems everyone wants a piece of the iPad application pie, and today none other than Bloomberg Businessweek has shuffled its way to the head of that ever-growing line with the launch of its iPad edition of Businessweek. So far, two editions have been released and from what we can tell, the iPad-optimized version of Businessweek is quite nice. The app lets you clip articles for later reading, adjust font size, and load additional information about cited companies (in a dedicated sidebar, so no one has to leave the app). The Bloomberg Businessweek app is available for download on the Apple App Store for $2.99 per four issues. However, if you already have a 26-week subscription to the print edition of the publication, the iPad app will be offered to you free.

Rovio hints at Easter update to Angry Birds Seasons next week

We've received word that Rovio will release its Easter update to Angry Birds Seasons on the App Store next week. From the screen shots, we can tell that the pigs will be dressed in their Easter finest, which really just entails bunny ears. We also see collectible candy and eggs strewn about the levels, which should put you in the egg-hunting spirit if you aren't already. The update will offer 15 new levels to the Angry Birds Seasons app, and Rovio is offering an additional three levels through Facebook. We'll hit you with more information as it comes in, but for those of us who simply can't wait to bust up some pigs, consider downloading the Angry Birds Rio app.

T-Mobile G2 to get Android 2.3 Gingerbread update soon

An HTC spokesperson has revealed to Computerworld that the T-Mobile G2 smartphone will receive an update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread this quarter. The G2, which is based on the European HTC Desire Z, also said to be getting Gingerbread soon, was originally launched with Android 2.2 Froyo last fall. It features a sliding, landscape keyboard with a unique hinge that allows the phone to open up almost completely flat. We did a full review of the G2 back in October and gave it a 3.9 star rating.

Intel to develop new next-gen chip: Cloverfield

Intel has hinted at the addition of a new next-generation chip to add to its catalog of low-power Atom processors. The newest chip to wear the Intel brand name will be called Cloverview, a tidbit let slip by general manager of Intel's netbook and tablet group, Doug Davis. During a speech at the Intel Developer Forum in Beijing, Davis mentioned that the chip will be built using a 32-nanometer process, which will lower power consumption. Intel will also be developing the Cedar Trail chip, which is designed for netbooks, and Medfield, which is made for low-end smartphones and tablets. No word yet on which devices we'll see running Cloverfield.

HTC Flyer Android tablet to go on sale May 9 in Europe

During a press event today in London, mobile device manufacturer HTC announced it will offer its first tablet, the HTC Flyer, across Europe starting on May 9. HTC's Flyer tablet offers 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity, a 1.5GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and some compelling HTC services such as Scribe and OnLive's on-demand gaming services. Amazon refreshes Kindle with affordable $114 ad-supported model

Amazon has announced a refreshed version of its popular e-book reader, the Kindle with Special Offers. The hardware is the same as the previous Kindle, with the 6-inch e-ink display and 8.5 ounce weight. However, Amazon is now subsidizing the cost a bit with advertising on the Kindle itself.
