eBay acquires Where to bolster local offerings Posted: 20 Apr 2011 11:41 AM PDT Online auction house eBay today announced that its PayPal subsidiary has taken on a subsidiary of its own. Where, a local discovery application developer, has been acquired by PayPal. eBay claims that local market information has become a priority in the company's business model and that PayPal will be integrated into Where's mobile apps. eBay also mentioned that it will continue to acquire companies and services that contribute to its local offerings component of its business. Apple shuts down incentivized apps Posted: 20 Apr 2011 10:47 AM PDT Apple has put its foot down with regards to incentivized apps in its App Store. Developers such as Flurry, TapJoy, and numerous others who offer virtual currency or goods in exchange for downloading a promoted application, are now having their applications rejected by Apple, which claims that the incentivized applications are in violations of section 3.10 of the developer guidelines. Verizon releasing Samsung Fascinate Android 2.2 Froyo update April 21 Posted: 20 Apr 2011 10:17 AM PDT Verizon Wireless today released the announcement that its Samsung Fascinate smartphone will begin receiving the Android 2.2 Froyo update starting Thursday, April 21. Fascinate owners should be able to download the update from the system updates section of their phones starting tomorrow. Nokia offers exclusive Angry Birds app with NFC on C7 Posted: 20 Apr 2011 10:15 AM PDT Nokia has tapped Rovio for an exclusive version of its smash-hit Angry Birds app that employs the NFC (Near Field Communications) capabilities of Nokia's C7 smartphone. Five levels are perfectly normal, but after that the user must find a friend who also has an NFC-enabled phone, as some of the following levels are only unlocked after touching phones with someone else. One friend unlocks the second five levels, two unlocks another five, and so on. While finding a friend with a C7 might not be as easy as simply smashing pigs, levels 6 through 20 can also be unlocked with NFC tags, which may be embedded in any object almost anywhere. Clues to the locations of these NFC tags have yet to emerge, but should be coming soon. Angry Birds Free with Magic will come on-deck on the C7 as a feature in the upcoming Anna Symbian update. BlackBerry PlayBook confirmed by UK retailers Posted: 20 Apr 2011 09:09 AM PDT RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook, the new 7-inch tablet that was released this week in the U.S. and Canada, does not yet have a release date for the UK. That hasn't stopped a list of retailers from confirming that they will be carrying the tablet, however. Carphone Warehouse, Phones4U, Currys, PC World, and Best Buy are all laying claim to retail rights on the tablet. The G-Slate is an 8.9-inch Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet with a dual-core Tegra 2 processor. It has dual 5 megapixel cameras on the back that can record 3D images and video and ships with a pair of 3D glasses for viewing the content on the G-Slate itself. We did a full review of the G-Slate and found it to be solid tablet option. The G-Slate sells for $529.99, after rebate, with a two-year data plan agreement. Motorola XOOM 3G Android tablet now for sale in UK Posted: 20 Apr 2011 06:10 AM PDT The 3G version of Motorola's 10.1-inch Android tablet, the XOOM, is now available for purchase in the UK. Carphone Warehouse has listed the Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet at 580 GBP (US$948) without any data plan.
