Microsoft shipped over 2 million WP7 devices last quarter

Microsoft says that it shipped over 2 million of its Windows Phone 7 powered smartphones to carriers last quarter. It has also found that early Windows Phone 7 customers are enjoying their experienced with the phone.

Foursquare updated for webOS with photo sharing, commenting

Foursquare has updated its webOS application to version 2.2.0. The latest iteration of the application adds the ability to share pictures view pictures other people have posted at various venues. It also allows you to comment on your friends' check-ins. Foursquare says the latest version also has user interface tweaks and bug fixes. It should be available for download now.

NYC lawmaker proposes ban on cell phone use while crossing streets

Karl Kruger, a New York State Senator, has proposed a new law that would ban people from using cell phones or MP3 players while crossing streets. Kruger said distracted walkers are "literally dying in the street." "The proposal was triggered by accidents like a woman tripping into a fountain while texting," CBS News said. If the law passes, violators could face a $100 fine. Some people believe such a law would be too intrusive of the government, but Kruger sees it differently. "When people are doing things that are detrimental to their own well being, then government should step in," he said.

Obama promises more wireless to "connect America to the digital age"

During his State of the Union speech last night, President Obama took a few moments to discuss the state of technology in the United States. He said he wants to connect "every part of America to the digital age," and that he wants 98 percent of Americans to have access to the wireless internet within 5 years.

Small survey claims 1 in 4 have not heard of Windows Phone 7

According to a survey of just 158 smartphone users by Strategy Analytics, one in four people have not heard of Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 smartphone operating system. The survey was conducted last week.

Unlimited data for AT&T iPhone still possible

We've just confirmed with an AT&T customer support representative that it's still possible to have an unlimited data plan (as opposed to the 2GB tiered one) with your iPhone. This option is available to older AT&T customers that, before AT&T introduced tiered pricing, had an unlimited data plan.

According to a new report from Gartner, global mobile application store revenue is expected to hit $15.1 billion this year. Similarly, Gartner predicts that 17.7 billion mobile applications will be downloaded in 2011.

Google buys SayNow, a social voice service

Today SayNow announced that it has been acquired by Google. SayNow launched in 2005 and, through products such as SawNow Broadcast, has allowed celebrities to broadcast voice messages to their fans. It also allows celebs to chat with fans-one-on-one or send voice messages back. SayNow can be directly integrated with Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, as well as with Android and iPhone applications. SayNow says it has no specific product plans to announce as it integrates with Google, but we expect this will be something Google integrates with its Google Voice product in the future.

O2 UK to offer free public Wi-Fi service

UK carrier O2, which is owned by Telefonica, today announced that it is launching a new freely accessible public Wi-Fi network across the the United Kingdom. To be called O2 Wifi, the network will be usable and free to both O2 and non-O2 subscribers, and the carrier said that it will start the network by converting its 450 existing Cloud hotspots in its retail and office spaces to free, premium O2 Wifi hotspots. O2 hopes to have a network that is twice the size of BT Openzone and The Cloud, combined, by 2013.

FCC to grant LightSquared's request for wireless use of satellite spectrum

According to The Wall Street Journal, the FCC is expected to allow satellite phone startup LightSquared to use its satellite spectrum with traditional mobile phones that have no satellite communications capabilities. This would effectively free the company to lease its spectrum to traditional wireless carriers like T-Mobile. Some carriers have expressed concern over this because satellite spectrum is available at a much more affordable price than the normal terrestrial spectrum that the carriers have been forced to purchase in the past. GPS manufacturers have also expressed concern that phones using satellite spectrum could cause interference with their products.

Facebook buys mobile ad firm Rel8tion

Facebook has purchased a small start-up mobile advertising company called Rel8tion. There's not a whole lot of information about Rel8tion available, other than it was working on some sort of location-based advertising service. Perhaps it's something Facebook will tie-in with its Places check-in service.

Giorgio Armani Samsung Galaxy S smartphone now available in UK

The Giorgio Armani Samsung Galaxy S smartphone, which is basically a re-branded Samsung Captivate for AT&T, is now available in the UK from retailer Phones4U. Apart from the Android 2.2 Froyo operating system that is powering the Armani edition and the Giorgio Armani name on the front, little appears to have been changed from the original Samsung Captivate that we reviewed last year. The phone can be had for free on some plans from Vodafone.

HTC revealing a Facebook device next month? We doubt it

There's a rumor floating around that HTC could announce a Facebook-branded phone next month that runs a customized Android operating system. We're not so sure it will happen, though, given Facebook's denial of any such project being in the works and the source's seeming lack of knowledge of the industry.

UK pricing for unlocked Sony Ericsson Xperia arc revealed

It appears that UK retailer Play has published pricing for the new, and gorgeous, Sony Ericsson Xperia arc Android smartphone. The site has the arc listed as going for 459.99 GBP for an unlocked model with free delivery. The Xperia arc is the first Sony Ericcson smartphone to make use of Sony's Bravia engine, which should improve image quality on its 4.2-inch WVGA resolution display. The Xperia arc runs on Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system and is expected to start shipping in the first quarter of 2011.

Adobe updates Photoshop Express for Apple iOS devices

Adobe has updated its Photoshop Express app for iOS devices including the iPhone. The new update offers Retina Display support for better quality images as well as adding overall improvements to the app like multitasking and background upload support. Adobe Photoshop Express is free but does require iOS 4.2 or greater.

Three UK to offer Samsung Galaxy Ace next month

Three UK has announced that the newly launched Samsung Galaxy Ace, and Android 2.2 powered smartphone, will be available to its UK based customers in February. Three has yet to announce pricing for the new handset, which features a 3.5-inch touchscreen display and a 5 megapixel camera, but has said that it will be available on its The One Plan, which offers all you can eat data for unlimited browsing and unlimited use of its 3G Wi-Fi hotspot sharing feature.

AAA Roadside Assistance app now available from the Android Market

AAA is now offering a Android version of its mobile application for users on the go. AAA Roadside allows its members to request roadside assistance direct from the app and uses the phone's GPS to transmit their location directly to AAA. The AAA Roadside app is part the company's free mobile suite and is available now free from the Android Market.

Amazon.co.uk announced the immediate release of its mobile shopping application for Android users. The new Amazon app for Android lets users access existing accounts and offers users Amazon's 1-Click ordering, tracking and modification of orders, recommendations, reviews, and access to Wish Lists. The Amazon app for Android is available now free from Google's Android Market.

Verizon iPhone 4 Personal Hotspot to cost $20

Verizon Wireless has confirmed that the Personal Hotspot feature on its iPhone 4 will cost $20 per month on top of an unlimited monthly data plan. The Persoanl Hotspot option will allow a user to share the iPhone 4's 3G connection with up to five other Wi-Fi enabled devices. It's perfect for using your iPhone's connection on the road to stay connected on your laptop, for example. The iPhone 4 is launching on Verizon Wireless on February 10.
