RIM providing Indian authorities access to consumer email, messages

RIM will provide India's government agencies with access to consumer BlackBerry Messenger messages and email services, the AFP is reporting today. RIM is not providing access to corporate emails, however. RIM had until January 31 to provide Indian authorities with a solution that allowed them to monitor messages flowing across BlackBerry devices in the country. RIM believes the solution "meets the standard required by the government of India for all consumer messaging services."

Verizon kills "New Every Two" program, restricts early upgrades

It appears that Verizon Wireless is killing its "New Every Two" upgrade program in anticipation of throngs of new customers signing up because of the arrival of the Apple iPhone 4, which the carrier will start offering on February 10.

Apple releases iOS 4.3 beta 1 to developers

Apple has just released the initial beta version of iOS 4.3, which is thought to possibly introduce the connection sharing "Personal Hotspot" feature found on Verizon's upcoming iPhone 4 model to other iOS devices. The beta release of iOS 4.3 is available to registered developers through Apple's developer portal.

Sprint making big "industry first" announcement on February 7

U.S. Cellular offering Android BOGO deals, free messaging phones

Today U.S. Cellular announced that it is starting a new buy-on get-one promotion on its Android devices, including the Samsung Galaxy Tab and the Samsung Mesmerize. The Galaxy Tab requires a $54.99 5GB monthly Belief Plan for each device. Other Android devices include the $99 HTC Desire, the $29.99 LG Optimus U, the $49.99 Samsung Acclaim, and the $49.99 LG Apex, after rebates. Customers who add smartphone lines to their existing Belief Plans will receive a $100 smartphone activation credit. Similarly, it is offering all of its messaging phones for free after a $50 mail-in rebate. The sale lasts through February 17.

Sprint drops Samsung Galaxy Tab price to $299

A Sprint spokeswoman has confirmed via Twitter that Sprint will lower the price of its Samsung Galaxy Tab Android tablet to $299 with a new 2-year Sprint agreement. The device is also available for $499.99 without a contract.

Google Translate for Android now offering Spanish Conversation Mode

Google has updated its Google Translate for Android application with a number of new features, the most noteworthy of which is its new Conversation Mode. Conversation Mode currently supports translations between English and Spanish. You simply need to press the microphone for your language, start speaking, and it will translate into text and hear the translation spoken back to you. This feature is still in alpha mode, so regional accents, rapid speech, and background noise can alter the performance. Google Translate is available for free and is supported on devices running Android 2.1 and above.

Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 Marketplace now offers over 6,000 apps to its users. The Marketplace has an array of apps for WP7 smartphone users and is growing at very nice clip. It has already passed the number of apps available in Palm's App Catalog and is sneaking up on BlackBerry's App World.

Virgin Mobile to throttle Broadband2Go "unlimited" data plan speeds

Virgin Mobile has decided to change its truly unlimited $40 monthly Broadband2Go data plan. The carrier will implement a 5GB cap on the service, and while you'll be able to download more data past 5GB, download speeds will be slower for the remainder of the month. Virgin said it decided to take this route to "implement network controls to ensure optimal experience," for its customers. The changes will start to take effect on February 15.

T-Mobile UK backs down, exempts existing customers from new data restrictions

T-Mobile UK has backed down a bit on its recently changed mobile internet fair use policy, which saw data limits for uses other than email or browsing, such as streaming media, cut from as much as 3GB per month for some customers to an across the board 500MB for all customers.

Google Places with Hotspot launches for iPhone

Today Google announced and launched its Google Places with Hotspot application for the iPhone. The app personalizes your search results and helps you find places based on your previous ratings. The app also allows you to add your favorite searches. Ratings are based on a five star system and you can also rate the food, service, atmosphere, and more of a specific destination. Google Places is available in the App Store now and is available for all iOS devices. Google says it's available in English only now but that more languages, and features, are on the way.

Microsoft challenges Apple's App Store trademark

Microsoft has filed an appeal with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's Trademark Trial and Appeal Board to prevent Apple from exclusively using the term "app store." Microsoft believes "app store," is generic and feels competitors should also be allowed to use the term.

40 percent of Twitter posts derived from mobile devices

According to Twitter CEO Dick Costolo, 40 percent of tweets come from mobile phones. Just a year ago 25 percent of Twitter's tweets were coming from mobile devices. Costolo attributes the boost to Twitter's official client launches on Apple iOS, Android, and BlackBerry.

Android 2.4 Ice Cream could launch in May

According to sources speaking to Pocket-Lint, Google will launch the next iteration of its Android operating system, version 2.4, during the Google IO conference in May. The new version is rumored to be called Ice Cream, which follows the Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, and Honeycomb versions of Android. Similarly, Tech Crunch says it has confirmed that Google's Andy Rubin said the next version will be called "Ice Cream Sandwich." Looks like we'll have to wait until Google's IO conference to find out for sure.

Personal Hotspot may hit AT&T iPhones in iOS 4.3 update

According to Boy Genius Report, Apple will add the Personal Hotspot feature found in Verizon's CDMA iPhone 4 to other iPhones in an iOS 4.3 update. The new iOS may not hit until later this spring, though.
