Bloomberg: Google working on NFC based mobile payment system

Bloomberg Businessweek is reporting that two sources have provided it with information on a new ~NFC based mobile payment system that Google is working on. The sources say that the service could launch this year. Google introduced NFC into its Android smartphone operating system with the Gingerbread 2.3 release that is currently available only on the Samsung built Nexus S, which we reviewed last month.

Walmart is now listing the Palm Pre 2 smartphone that looks to be exclusive to Verizon Wireless on its online phone store. The smartphone runs Palm's webOS operating system and sports a 5 megapixel camera with video recording.

Amazon to offer free Kindle apps for Android tablets

Amazon today confirmed that it is planning to release a wide assortment of Amazon's free "Buy Once, Read Everywhere" Kindle apps for Android-based tablet computers. The apps are expected to be free and will allow users to download books or continue reading books they've already purchased on their Kindle or other Kindle App enabled devices. The apps will be specific to each device, similar to how Kindle tailored its iPad application for that platform. Eye-Fi to add smartphone and tablet support to its photo sharing SD cards

Today connected SD memory card maker Eye-Fi announced that it will add new "Direct Mode" support to its camera cards that will allow smartphone and tablet users to automatically receive images shot with their cameras so that they can be easily shared via email or posted on social networks. The new Direct Mode feature will be a free upgrade to existing X2 branded Eye-Fi memory cards, and will be available later in the year.

Motorola to offer a range of different sized Android tablets

Motorola Mobility's CEO, Sanjay Jha, hinted today at the New York Stock Exchange that Motorola will offer Android based tablet computers that range in size from 7 to 11 inches, according to the Financial Times. Motorola plans to unveil its first tablet product this week at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show, and that tablet is expected to be the first Android Honeycomb device to hit the market.

California Supreme Court says police can search arrestee's phones without warrant

The California Supreme Court has ruled that it is legal for police to search the contents of cell phones posessed by those they arrest as suspects in a crime without the need for a warrant. The Ohio Supreme Court reached the opposite conclusion just over a year ago, which suggests that the federal court system might become involved eventually. In any case, this is a pretty good reason to put a password lock on your own phone.

HP to host Palm webOS announcement event on February 9

We just received an invitation to an event hosted by HP that is to take place on February 9, 2011 in San Francisco. The invitation says that the event is for "an exciting webOS announcement." No further details were provided. This seems to suggest that we will not see much from HP and Palm at CES this week.

Samsung launches SH100 Wi-Fi camera with remote control smartphone app

Today Samsung launched its new SH100 Wi-Fi enabled digital point and shoot camera. Why do we care, you ask? Because it can be remotely controlled with a Samsung Galaxy S class smartphone. Remote users will have access to preview images, zooming control, and, of course, the ability to take phones - all from their Samsung Galaxy S smartphone. The camera is also capable of other connected features, such as posting images to Facebook, sharing videos on YouTube, or backing up images to a desktop computer. The Samsung SH100 camera will be available for $199 starting in March.

The HTC EVO Shift 4G, a new Android smartphone that offers users a slide-out physical QWERTY keyboard, is now available for pre-order from Best Buy. The EVO Shift 4G offers the obvious support for Sprint's 4G WiMAX network, as well as Google's Android 2.2 Froyo OS, a 5mp autofocus camera with 720p HD video recording, Bluetooth, and more. Customers can visit Best Buy stores or go online to order the smartphone. The HTC EVO Shift 4G retails for $149.99 with new two-year service agreement with Sprint and will be available next week.
