Microsoft reiterates copy paste, CDMA coming to Windows Phone 7

During its keynote speech at CES in Las Vegas tonight, Microsoft restated that copy and paste functionality is soon to come to its Windows Phone 7 smartphones. The company also said that Windows Phone 7 has 100 new applications every 24 hours, on average, and that its platform will hit CDMA carriers like Sprint and Verizon the first half of this year.

T-Mobile announces the 4G-enabled LG G-Slate, an Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet

In a very brief and detail-light press release issued hot on the heels of Motorola's XOOM tablet announcement, LG and T-Mobile USA have officially announced the pending availability of their own Android 3.0 Honeycomb powered tablet computer: the LG G-Slate. T-Mobile expects to offer the tablet in "the coming months" and it will work on T-Mobile's 4G HSPA+ powered data network. No additional details or pricing information have been provided at this time, though we suspect we will learn more at T-Mobile's press event tomorrow at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Motorola and Verizon Wireless have launched the Motorola XOOM, the first Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet. The XOOM features a 10.1-inch display, is capable of 1080p HD video playback, and sports a dual-core processor. It will be a 3G device at launch, but will receive a 4G LTE update in Q2 of 2011.

Samsung introduces wireless printing for Android and Apple iOS

Today Samsung announced the Samsung MobilePrint application for Android and Apple iOS powered smartphones at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The application will allow users to print email messages, web pages, maps, photos, and documents directly from a compatible smartphone to a Samsung wireless printer. The application will be available for free this winter and will be built into 2011 Galaxy tab tablets.

This comes on the heels of Samsung announcing a new Wi-Fi only version of its Galaxy Tab computer that is expected to hit store shelves later this quarter.

LG demos WiFi DIRECT connectivity for smartphones

Barnes & Noble debuts Nook kids app for Apple iPad

Barnes&Noble has announced a new iPad app specifically targeted for children, the Nook kids app. The new app for Apple's iPad offers a kid-friendly e-reader with enhanced storybook reading options that include full text to speech capability. NVIDIA demos Skype HD video calling; is working with Netflix on Android

Today NVIDIA announced some of the partners it is working with to take advantage of the power in its Tegra 2 dual-core processor chipset. Skype HD video calling was demonstrated on a prototype Android tablet, for example. NVIDIA used the SkypeKit API to develop it. The company is also working with streaming movie firm Netflix, which said that it was working with Tegra "to bring the Netflix experience to Android"

NVIDIA introduces app store for Tegra 2 powered Android phones

Chipset maker NVIDIA announced a new app store for Android phones that features applications that take advantage of its dual-core Tegra 2 processor. The new store will be called Tegra Zone and will offer users the ability to find and download high quality games that are not found on Google's existing Android's app store. The dual-core based Tegra 2 is the first of its kind and offers lower power consumption on devices as well as faster imaging and hardware acceleration. NVIDIA's Tegra Zone will offer approximately five to ten titles on launch, including Dungeon Defender, Monster Madness, Fruit Ninja, Backbreaker THD, and Galaxy on Fire. The LG Optimus 2X and the Motorola ATRIX 4G smartphones use NVIDIA's Tegra 2 processor. /p>

Comcast app to deliver live TV to iPad

Comcast will soon launch a new iPad application that will allow Comcast customers to stream on-demand television on their tablet. The app will first allow on-demand content only, Reuters is reporting, but Comcast also plans to allow users to watch live real-time content, such as television programs, in the future. The service will launch with 3,000 hours of viewable content at first and should be available in the next few weeks. Reuters also hinted that an Android application is in the works for tablets running that operating system. It's reported that the live streaming service will only work in a user's home when it launches.

LG shows new glasses-free 3D mobile display

Today LG unveiled a new 3D display for mobile phones that requires no special glasses to use. The display measures 4.3-inches in size and offers 480 x 800 pixel resolution, and LG says that the display is both bright and flicker free. LG states that the the slits used to ensure that each eye sees the different images required for the 3D effect are more precisely positioned on its new 3D mobile display than on previous displays based on similar technology.

Casio shows Bluetooth Low Energy watch that connects to smartphones

During CES in Las Vegas, Casio took the wraps off of a Bluetooth Low Energy watch. The watch, which is just a prototype for now, allows users to connect via Bluetooth to their mobile phones to keep atop of emails and phone calls. The BLE enabled watch uses the new low power consumption version of Bluetooth short-range wireless connectivity that is not currently supported by any shipping phones.

During its press conference at CES in Las Vegas, AT&T stated that along with its official announcement of the HTC Freestyle BREW Mobile Platform enabled phone, it would announce five other BREW MP quick messaging phones on its network. The BREW Mobile Platform still allows user to have access to apps even if their device is not considered a smartphone. AT&T also stated that Rogers in Canada and America Movil have also committed to Qualcomm's BREW MP platform.

AT&T to launch 12 Android, 20 4G devices this year

During AT&T's press conference at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this morning, AT&T's Ralph de La Vega took the stage. He announced that AT&T will launch 20 new 4G devices this year and that it will deploy its 4G LTE network starting mid-2011. That includes Android and Windows Phone devices, as well as devices from Apple. AT&T will also launch 12 new Android smartphones this year.The first phones that will run on its 4G network include the Motorola Atrix, an Android powered smartphone, and the Android-powered HTC Inspire 4G.

Qualcomm to buy Wi-Fi chip maker Atheros

Today mobile chip maker Qualcomm announced that it has entered into an agreement to buy Atheros, a company known best for its Wi-Fi and other wireless related technologies. Qualcomm says that the purchase will help it expand beyond its core mobile technology markets. Qualcomm has agreed to pay $3.1 billion for Atheros, and expects the acquisition to be finalized in the first half of 2011.

Rolling Stone is running an HTC advertisement showing off the company's latest smartphones, including the oft-rumored HTC ThunderBolt. This unannounced HTC smartphone features Verizon Wireless branding and appears to be running Google's Android OS. It is expected, of course, to support Verizon's newly launched 4G LTE network. We expect to see an official announcement this week at CES in Las Vegas.
