Sudden Verizon NYC event on January 11 smacks of iPhone

Earlier today we received an invitation to an event in New York City on January 11 to be hosted by Lowell McAdam, president of Verizon Communications and former CEO of Verizon Wireless. No information beyond time and address is provided, but the fact that it takes place mere days after CES wraps up seems very odd. While Verizon has made no such indication, the fact that McAdam is presiding and that the event didn't take place at CES certainly has people thinking Apple. Certainly seems like a good time to announce an Apple iPhone for Verizon....

Sony Ericsson: No Android OS updates for Xperia X10 devices

Our friends over at Android Community have gotten confirmation that Sony Ericsson will not provide Android OS updates beyond 2.1 Eclair for its X10 line of smartphones, which includes the Xperia X10, X10 mini, and the X10 mini pro. The company said, "We believe that the current Xperia range on Android 2.1 coupled with Sony Ericsson's proprietary upgrades and unique hardware delivers a user experience that is on par with, and in many cases better than, a vanilla installation of Android 2.2."

Video: HTC Thunderbolt for Verizon video preview

The HTC ThunderBolt is a new Android 2.2 powered 4G LTE smartphone for Verizon Wireless. It features a large 4.3-inch display and offers a kickstand on the rear cover, as well as dual cameras - including an 8MP main unit.

Simultaneous 10MP photo and 1080p video sensor launched by OmniVision

Today OmniVision launched the OV10810p, a new camera sensor that can simultaneously record 10 megapixel still images and 1080p HD video. The sensor is intended for use in smartphones and similar devices.

Apple iTunes accounts hacked for online sale in China

According to China's Global Times, Apple's iTunes has been hacked, allowing over 50,000 accounts to be sold illegally through online store taobao.com in China. The iTunes accounts are being sold for as little as 200yuan (US$30) and are linked to active credit cards from hacked iTunes customers allowing buyers access to an assortment of movies, music, and apps.

Sony Ericsson Xperia PlayStation smartphone previewed

New photos have surfaced from China showing Sony Ericsson's upcoming PlayStation phone. The new photos offer a bit more detail and show a sliding gamepad and a SE Xperia logo around back. The phone is rumored to offer a large 4.1-inch display screen and a 5 megapixel camera with flash, and is expected to run on a fast 1GHz processor with the Android 2.2 operating system.
