BlackBerry 6 hits Verizon Bold 9650 and Curve 3G phones

Today Verizon Wireless said that owners of the BlackBerry Bold 9650 and the BlackBerry Curve 3G will receive a software update at 8pm tonight that will upgrade their devices to the newest BlackBerry 6 operating system. BlackBerry 6 provides a revamped user interface, universal search, social feeds, and more. At 8PM EST Verizon says customers can visit www.blackberry.com/updates to download the software. There will also be an over-the-air (OTA) option, and that can be activated by choosing Options > Advanced Options > Wireless Update. Verizon adding Mac support to 4G LTE modems in February

According to a Verizon Wireless spokesperson who spoke to Phone Scoop, Verizon will issue an update to its software in February that will allow users of its 4G LTE USB modems to connect to its 4G network from Mac computers. It's unclear when in February the update will be pushed out, but we'll keep you in the loop.

Verizon issues LG VL600 4G LTE modem update

Today Verizon Wireless announced that an update is available for the LG VL600, a 4G LTE USB modem. After the software update is applied, VZAccess Manager should display more accurate network connection status. It should also scan Verizon's network more frequently to ensure a better connection. Facebook says mobile is its primary focus this year

During the Inside Social Apps conference in San Francisco today, Facebook's chief technology officer, Bret Taylor, said that Facebook will focus on mobile development this year. He said that Facebook is "putting a huge amount of investment" in HTML this year, noting that 125 million of its mobile users are already devices capable of running HTML 5, such as Android smartphones and the iPhone. That's more than half of its 200 million+ mobile users. "Taylor said Facebook is likely to create its own "high-quality social location database," which could compete with the likes of SimpleGeo," AllThingsD said.

MetroPCS files lawsuit against FCC over net neutrality rules

Today MetroPCS followed in Verizon Wireless' footsteps by filing a lawsuit against the Federal Communication Commission over its net neutrality rules. "MetroPCS' concerns regarding the jurisdictional basis for the net neutrality rules, the recent appeal filed by Verizon, and challenges raised by some proponents of net neutrality to MetroPCS' recent 4G rate plans, have caused Metro PCS to appeal the FCC's net neutrality order to ensure that the concerns of competitive wireless carriers, like MetroPCS, are addressed," Roger Linquist, MetroPCS' CEO, said. The FCC's net neutrality rules would prevent wireless operators from blocking competing services on their networks.

Kodak loses preliminary ruling against Apple and RIM

In a preliminary ruling, the U.S. International Trade Commission said that it did not find Research In Motion or Apple in violation of Kodak's patents involving camera technology in smartphones. Kodak still believes that the case will eventually conclude in its favor.

Verizon will only offer $30 iPhone 4 unlimited data plan for "limited time"

Earlier today Verizon Wireless said that it will offer a $30 monthly unlimited data plan for iPhone 4 users. That's attractive, especially given that AT&T caps its plan at 2GB and then charges for each additional 1GB used. Now Verizon says that it's only going to offer the plan "for a limited time," but didn't clarify on exactly how long that would last. The iPhone 4 will be available on February 10, and pre-orders for existing customers begin on February 3.

Google I/O registration opening February 7

Registration for the 2011 Google I/O event will open up on February 7, according to Google's vice president of Engineering, Vic Gundotra. The event is to be held May 10 and 11 in San Francisco's Moscone Center, and will feature sessions on all of Google's technologies, including its Android smartphone operating system. The early bird pricing for the event will be $450 (good through mid April). In years past, paying attendees have received a Google Android phone as part of the event package.

Google Voice number porting now available to everyone for $20

Today Google announced that its Google Voice users can now take advantage of its new Number Porting feature. That means you can use the mobile number you've had for years as your Google Voice number, should you choose to. The feature costs $20 and Google says it typically takes about 24 hours for the number porting process to complete. Porting your mobile number will cancel your existing mobile service plan, so you may be subject to early termination fees. Since you'll lose your mobile service plan, you'll need to create a new one and get a new mobile number, too. Samsung Vibrant Android smartphone now free on T-Mobile

T-Mobile is now offering the Samsung Vibrant, a Galaxy S Android smartphone, for free with a new two-year T-Mobile agreement. The Vibrant offers a 1GHz Samsung Hummingbird processor and a large 4-inch Super AMOLED display. The deal is likely because T-Mobile will soon launch the Samsung Galaxy S 4G, which is widely believed to be nearly identical to the Vibrant, save for the added 4G HSPA+ connectivity. But hey, if you're looking to save a few bucks while still picking up a solid Android smartphone, the Vibrant is still an honorable choice.

Murdoch: The Daily for iPad to cost $0.99 per week, will launch within two weeks

According to Rupert Murdoch, who spoke during the DLD Media Conference in Munich today, News Corp will launch its digital newspaper for the iPad, titled The Daily, within the next two weeks. The digital newspaper was supposed to launch on January 19 but was delayed for unknown reasons. The Daily will cost $0.99 per week when it launches.

Huawei wins temporary court order against Motorola

Huawei has won a temporary court order against Motorola in a pending intellectual property infringement case. Huawei has asked Motorola to assure that it won't reveal confidential Huawei information to Nokia Siemens Networks when it sells a part of its business that Huawei worked closely with. Huawei claims that Motorola has failed to provide those assurances. "In her order dated Monday, U.S. District Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman in Chicago ordered Huawei and the Motorola defendants to propose a protective order within 24 hours," Reuters said.

Verizon CEO confirms iPhone 4 $30 unlimited data plan

Today Verizon Wireless' CEO, Lowell McAdam, confirmed to The Wall Street Journal that Verizon will offer a $30 unlimited data plan for its iPhone 4 owners. "I'm not going to shoot myself in the foot," he said, noting that not offering such a plan might deter users that want to move off of AT&T's 2GB tiered pricing plans. McAdam also said that anticipation for the iPhone launch had an effect on Verizon's Q4 2010 sales and that the sales weren't as good as he hoped they would be.

According to some leaked materials, Verizon may soon get rid of its $15 150MB plan and instead offer 3G smartphone and feature phone owners with just a $30 unlimited option. This suggests that future 4G LTE smarphone owners won't be able to take advantage of the $30 unlimited plan.

MetroPCS expands 4G LTE network to 4 new cities

Today MetroPCS announced that it is expanding its 4G LTE network to four new markets. The new areas include Atlanta, Jacksonville, Miami, and Orlando. MetroPCS customers can use the Samsung Craft, a 4G LTE device, to take advantage of the data speeds where available. Service plans range from $40 to $60 a month. With the new markets, MetroPCS 4G LTE is now offered in a total of 13 markets.

Verizon Q4 2010 earnings report shows solid subscriber growth
