LG expected to unveil Android Honeycomb tablet at CES

Reports on the internet are saying that LG Electronics will officially take the wraps of its much rumored tablet at CES this week. The tablet is expected to run Google's Android 3.0 Honeycomb operating system. Sources are saying that LG will offer two tablet sizes: 8.9-inch and 10-inch, and will possibly be marketed under the Optimus Pad naming scheme. We'll know for sure later this week.

LG Quantum, Samsung Focus Windows Phone 7 smartphones drop to $100

AT&T has dropped the price on two of its Microsoft Windows Phone 7 smartphones, the LG Quantum and the Samsung Focus. Both handsets initially came with a $199.99 price tag but have now been lowered to $99.99. AT&T is also waiving activation fees and offering free shipping on both devices.

HTC EVO Shift 4G Android smartphone for Sprint revealed by Walmart

Walmart is now listing the unannounced HTC EVO Shift smartphone that looks to be exclusive to Sprint on its online phone store. The new smartphone appears to support 4G WiMAX connectivity and run Google's Android 2.2 Froyo operating system.

Today Opera announced that it will be launching a special version of its browser that's catered towards tablets and netbooks. A sample video shows its new browser running on the Android powered Samsung Galaxy Tab. We expect to hear more from Opera during CES this week.

Motorola split taking effect tomorrow

Tomorrow Motorola will split into Motorola Mobility and Motorola Solutions. Motorola Mobility will be responsible for smartphones and set-top boxes while Motorola Solutions will be the home for Enterprise Mobility Solutions and Motorola's networks divisions. Motorola announced the split last February and confirmed that the split would be completed on January 4 in late November. Motorola Solutions will be led by Greg Brown and Sanjay Jha will lead Motorola Mobility.

Sprint passes on Clearwire debt offer

Sprint has passed on buying debt from Clearwire, its partner in 4G WiMAX networks. "The deadline passed and Sprint did not exercise its preemptive rights to participate, Cristi Allen, a Sprint spokeswoman, told Bloomberg. Clearwire has said that it will run out of cash in 2011 if it doesn't raise more money. It offered to sell $1.1 billion in debt in November, and Sprint had a January 2 deadline to purchase the debt. Sprint has owned a majority stake of Clearwire since Clearwire merged with Sprint's Xohm WiMAX unit.

New data from Nielsen suggests that Android is continuing to creep up on Apple in U.S. smartphone market. While Apple maintains the most share overall, Android saw more growth during the month of November. Android also has the largest share among those who have purchased a new phone during the last 6 months.

Apple iPad 2 rumored to have SD or USB port, camera

Apple fan site 9to5 Mac recently posted drawings of a purported iPad 2 case that shows a slimmer back on the tablet as well as a rear facing camera and port. The port is thought to be either for mini-USB or an SD card slot. Since the original posting, 9to5 Mac has since been asked to remove the drawings and has complied.

Today MetroPCS announced new pricing for its 4G LTE-based network plans, including an unlimited talk, text, and web plan for only $40 per month - including taxes and fees. The company also announced plans to expand its 4G coverage into Atlanta and parts of Florida.

VIZIO announces VIA Plus system for its smartphone, tablet, and TV related devices

Today VIZIO officially announced its new VIA Plus application "ecosystem," which is meant to provide a consistent user interface across its Google TV based LCD TVs and Blu-ray players, as well as its newly announced smartphone and tablet products. VIZIO says that VIA Plus will provide for "unified on-demand content and application consumption across multiple consumer electronic devices including VIZIO HDTVs, Blu-ray players, SmartPhones and Tablets." The Android based VIA Phone and VIA Tablet will also support the Android Market and will be able to function as universal remote control devices.

Samsung sells 10 million Galaxy S Android smartphones

Today Samsung announced that it has sold 10 million of its Android powered Galaxy S smartphones. Samsung was able to hit this milestone just seven months after it released the device in June 2010. Samsung's president and head of mobile communications, JK Shin, said that the Galaxy S outperformed Samsung's expectations. "We will continue to meet this demand, delivering leading innovation and building smartphones that will maximize user experiences," Shin said. Samsung launched its Galaxy S smartphones on all four of the major U.S. carriers.

Toshiba Tegra 2 powered Android Honeycomb tablet spotted

Engadget has gotten its hands on an unannounced and unnamed Toshiba tablet. The device is sadi to be powered by NVIDIA's Tegra 2 dual-core chip. It has a 10.1-inch display with a 1280 x 800 resolution, a 3MP front-facing camera, and a 5MP rear camera. It even has HDMI and USB ports. The device will reportedly run Android 2.3 Honeycomb, which is designed for use on smartphones and on larger-screened tablets. Samsung Kies Air adds Galaxy S Wi-Fi sync support

Samsung is rolling out a new piece of software for its Galaxy S Android smartphone that will allow for Wi-Fi sync. Kies Air is an application that's available from the Samsung Apps store on the Galaxy S,a nd it will reportedly allow users to access the device over Wi-Fi to see their calls logs, sync music, videos, photos, bookmarks, and more. It looks like this is only supported by the i9000 Galaxy S for now, and not the various versions available in the United States.
