Facebook launches feature phone app

Last night Facebook announced that it's launching a special version of it's application that's designed for feature phones. It's called Facebook for Feature Phones and it works on more than 2,500 devices built by Nokia, Sony Ericsson, LG, and others. It provides contact sync, photo browsing, friend updates, and more. Facebook said it's also working with 14 mobile operators (none in the U.S.) so that its users can try to app without paying for data access for the first 90 days after they launch the app. Facebook for Feature Phones is available from m.fb.snaptu.com/f.

HTC Gratia Android smartphone headed to U.K. in February

Today HTC officially declared that the Gratia, an Android 2.2 Froyo powered smartphone that was launched in October 2010, will be available for purchase in the United Kingdom next month. It will be offered through Brightstar, an HTC distribution partner. Pricing for the Gratia has not yet been announced. /p>

HTC 7 Pro Windows Phone 7 smartphone launching in U.K.

Today HTC announced that the HTC 7 Pro, a Windows Phone 7 device, will launch in the United Kingdom. The HTC 7 Pro features a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a 3.6-inch display, and a 1GHz processor. It also offers Dolby Mobile and SRS WOW HD support for high quality audio. The HTC 7 Pro will be available in February through HTC"s distribution partners Brightpoint GB and Brightstar. Pricing for the device was not announced.

Nokia bails on X7 AT&T launch

Nokia has pulled plans to launch its Symbian^3 powered X7 smartphone on AT&T, The Wall Street Journal is reporting. The X7 had been leaked in a video back in November 2010 and more recently appeared in images with AT&T labeling. Nokia and AT&T reportedly had plans to launch the phone ahead of the Mobile World Congress show next month in Barcelona. Nokia decided against the launch because AT&T wasn't going to offer enough subsidies or marketing muscle in the United States. The move doesn't come as a huge surprise to us, given the poor user experience we saw with the Symbian^3 powered Nokia N8.

T-Mobile launches FamilyWhere child-tracking Android app

T-Mobile today announced that it's now offering a new Android application called FamilyWhere that will help parents keep track of their kids. Parents can check on a child's location and can receive optional location alerts via web, text message, or email. It also provides a history of locations and customizable alerts, which will help parents know if a child is home by their curfew or is showing up late for school. The application is available in the Android Market. T-Mobile says a subscription is required but did not list a price.

T-Mobile launches DriveSmart Android app for safe driving

Today T-Mobile announced that it's now offering a new Android application called DriveSmart that it hopes will spur safer driving. The app is available in two flavors: DriveSmart Basic and DriveSmart Plus. With the basic version, a driver can manually tell the app to go into "driving mode" which silences all incoming calls and texts and sends out custom texts alerting that the user is driving. If Bluetooth is on, calls will be routed through the Bluetooth headset. DriveSmart Plus automatically turns on "driving mode" when it suspects you're driving. It also includes a web interface that parents can monitor to see if a driver overrides the app. The app currently only supports the LG Optimus T, but more phones will be supported soon. T-Mobile Motorola CLIQ 2 Android smartphone now available

T-Mobile's latest Android smartphone, the Motorola CLIQ 2, is now available. The CLIQ 2 runs Android 2.2 and has a full QWERTY keyboard. Other features include a 5MP camera, a 1GHz processor, and support for T-Mobile's 3G/4G network. The CLIQ 2 is available for $99 after a $100 mail-in rebate and with a new 2-year T-Mobile contract.

Samsung announcing heir to Galaxy S throne on February 13

Samsung has created a new website that's teasing the successor to the Galaxy S Android smartphone. The website says "Join us to discover the next evolution in Samsung Mobile," and shows an unknown device sitting next to the Galaxy S. We assume this will be an Android powered device. Playboy launching on iPad in March

According to Hugh Hefner, Playboy will be available on the iPad beginning in March. New and old issues of the magazine will be accessible and the content will be uncensored. Oddly, the "uncensored" part seems to be against Apple's typical policy to not allow nude content in applications launched in its iTunes app store.

Apple COO says new tablets are "vapor"

During Apple's earnings conference call yesterday, chief operating officer Tim Cook took some time to jab a few competing tablet technologies. He believes tablets powered by Microsoft's Windows operating system are big and heavy, and said that tablets running a version of Android designed for smartphones are "bizarre."

Froyo now powering more than half of Android smartphones

According to new data from Android Developers, Android 2.2 Froyo is now installed on more than half of all Android smartphones (51.8 percent). Android 2.1 is installed on 35.2 percent of all Android smartphones, followed by version 1.6 (7.9 percent), and version 1.5 (4.7 percent). Google's latest version of the operating system, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, is installed on just 0.4 percent of Android powered devices. That low figure is because, besides the Nexus S, new handsets running that version have not yet been released.

Apple iPad drove tablet growth in 2010

According to a new report from IDC, Apple's iPad drove global tablet sales during the third quarter of 2010. The firm found that vendors shipped an estimated 4.8 million units during Q3, up from 3.3 million units shipped the quarter prior. IDC forecasts nearly 17 million tablet shipments in 2010 and expects 44.6 million tablets to ship in 2011.
