Skyfire for iPad now available for $4.99

Skyfire has launched its Apple iPad web browser. Skyfire for iPad offers a number of features, including the ability to watch Flash video content within the web browser. Other features include a Popular Content Skybar button for viewing shared stories from Facebook, Skyfire's Fireplace Feed Reader for RSS feeds, and more. The application is available now for $4.99 in the iTunes App Store.

Skype fixing service outage

Today Skype announced that it's still working to fix a technical issue that has prevented its users from placing Skype calls or even logging in. Skype said that its engineers were working on "mega-supernodes," and that could mean it will be a few hours before the site is back up to normal. "Thanks for your continued patience while we get everyone back online -- sorry especially to those of you who are still waiting," Skype said via Twitter. Skype has created a blog entry which details the downtime to keep its customers up to date.

HTC making 4G announcement on January 6

HTC has launched a teaser website that shows a device under a black cloak. Next to the phone is the text "The first to 4G, again." We suspect this is HTC's Incredible HD, which would be the first 4G LTE device on Verizon. Images of the Incredible HD have been leaked regularly, some by HTC/Verizon PR teams, so we're putting our money on that being the announcement. Last year HTC announced the first 4G WiMAX phone for Sprint, the HTC EVO 4G. We'll keep you up to date on January 6 when HTC breaks the news.

Instagram headed to Android smartphones

Instagram, the popular photo sharing, photo filter, and social-network style application on iPhone, is headed to Android smartphones in the future. Kevin Systrom, in an interview with Tech Crunch, said that an API will likely be available first, followed by An Android application. Sadly, Systrom didn't provide any sort of timing for when the application will be available. "Android is really important to us, and we know it's important to lots of people too," Systrom said. Yesterday, Instagram announced that it now has 1 million users.

MetroPCS to pre-install Boingo Wi-Fi app on Android smartphones

Today MetroPCS announced a new partnership with Boingo. It will begin preinstalling the Boingo Mobile application on its Android smartphones. The application will allow users to sign up for Boingo Mobile, which provides unlimited Wi-Fi in more than 200,000 locations globally. The app will initially launch on the LG Optimus M and the Huawei Ascend. Boingo Mobile costs $7.95 per month.

Facebook for webOS updated with Places

Facebook has updated its webOS client with support for Facebook's Places. Places allows users to check-in to various locations, much like one with would Foursquare, and you can also tag friends that are hanging out with you. According to PreCentral, Palm is also working on bringing support for Facebook Chat through its messaging application. It's unclear when that update will be issued.

Rhapsody for BlackBerry leaves beta

The full version of Rhapsody's BlackBerry client is now available for download from BlackBerry App World. Rhapsody provides access to 10 million songs via Wi-Fi or 3G for a $10 monthly subscription. Motorola buys start-up to boost MOTOBLUR experience

Today Motorola announced that it has purchased Zecter, a firm that provides cloud-based sync and multimedia streaming solutions. Motorola said that it will use Zecter's resources to further enhance its MOTOBLUR service, which is offered on Motorola's Android smartphones. It will use Zecter's wireless syncing, desktop integration, video transcoding, and thin-file retrieval technologies to help users more easily access their content. Motorola will still provide updates for current ZumoCast customers and Zecter's ZumoDrive solution will not be affected. Motorola did not disclose financial details of the purchase.

HTC EVO Shift 4G for Sprint leaked in images

Images of Sprint's upcoming Android smartphone, the HTC EVO Shift 4G, have been leaked in a series of images obtained by PhoneArena. The shots show a slide-out 4-row full QWERTY keyboard, a camera, and what appears to be a xenon flash. The EVO Shift 4G, which is rumored to have an 800MHz processor and run Android 2.3 Gingerbread, may be announced at CES next month. As its name implies, it will run on Sprint's 4G WiMAX network. Motorola announcing Verizon 4G LTE phone at CES

According to sources speaking to Bloomberg, Motorola will announce a new smartphone during the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next month that will be capable of running on Verizon's 4G LTE network. Verizon has said that it plans to begin selling 4G phones in mid-2011. We'll be on the show floor during the first week of January, so stay tuned for more news

Photos of the HTC Incredible HD were leaked, apparently by Verizon or HTC, to a number of blogs yesterday. The unannounced device, likely an Android smartphone, offers a camera with dual-LED flash, a front-facing cam for video chat, and more. Details are still slim.

Navigon updates Android GPS app

Navigon's Android app, which provides GPS based turn-by-turn directions, has been updated to version 3.5.3. The latest update allows users to navigate to addresses in any other app with address export support. It also features GSM Map Downloads, a reality scanner switch, and performance enhancements. The app is on sale for the holidays for $39.99, a $20 discount.
