India wants corporate BlackBerry access

Posted: 06 Dec 2010 05:17 AM PST

India, still wanting access to RIM's secure data in its country, is now asking specific companies, that use BlackBerry smartphones, for access to their secure communications. India's Home Secretary G.K. Pillai has said that rumors India would block BlackBerry devices on January 31 are "overblown" and that the date was more of "target date" for RIM and India to reach their goals. RIM has already given access to its secure BlackBerry Messenger client, and has said it is working with India to provide access to data while respecting the privacy concerns of companies. RIM has said it is confident India's security concerns will be addressed. Read our earlier reports for an in-depth background on the RIM/India situation.

New advertisement fliers spotted by 9to5Mac state that the white iPhone 4 will be available during Spring of next year. The white iPhone 4 was announced at the same time as the black one but it never hit the market. In July we reported that the white version was delayed until later this year after it was deemed "more challenging to manufacture." Fring video calling for Android and iPhone gets dynamic video quality

Posted: 05 Dec 2010 12:21 PM PST

Video chat provider fring has announced that it has added what it calls Dynamic Video Quality (DVQ) to its video chat applications for Apple iOS and Android smartphones. What the system does, in brief, is dynamically adjust the inbound and outbound video stream quality to match the abilities of both users' data connections. So if one or both participants in a fring video call see degraded data connection speeds for some reason (walking indoors, for example), the application will adjust down the video stream bitrates and framerates on both ends to keep the video stream going smoothly and ensure that high audio quality is maintained. DVQ-enabled versions of the fring application are currently available in the Android Market and the iPhone App Store.

It appears that the official Android 2.2 Froyo update for Sprint's Samsung Epic 4G is starting to roll out - though Sprint has not yet officially acknowledged that. Users supposedly can expect to receive the update directly pushed to their handset by the end of the month, but BriefMobile.com also has posted some instructions for manually obtaining and applying the update. The process is not intended for novices, though, so be warned. When asked for an official comment on the supposed update, a Sprint rep told us "We have not shared specific timing in the release of Android 2.2 for Samsung Epic 4G. We will share specific details when they are available."
