Galaxy S users gobble more data than iPhone 4, says study

A series of studies conducted by a firm called Arieso have found that users with Android smartphones are particularly data hungry, with devices like Samsung's Galaxy S smartphones consuming much more data than even the iPhone 4.

Verizon Wireless apologizes for early morning web browser glitch

Apparently this morning between 1:40am and 5am EST, some Verizon Wireless users were unable to reach the internet through web browsers on their phones. Verizon Wireless has apologized for the temporary technical glitch. "Last night, during routine maintenance of our 3G network, a technical glitch hampered the ability of customers to reach the Internet through web browsers on their phones. This technical glitch lasted from approximately 1:40 am ? 5 am ET, and covered a large proportion of our regular network. 3G network coverage was never out, just this one particular service. Full capabilities were fully restored at approximately 5 am ET. We apologize to any and all affected customers," a spokesperson said.

RIM says QNX PlayBook OS will power BlackBerry smartphones in the future

Speaking during the AllThingsD D: Dive Into Mobile conference last night in San Francisco, RIM's co-CEO Mike Lazaridis spoke about his firm's plans for QNX, the operating system that powers its upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. He confirmed that the QNX operating system will eventually power smartphones across RIM's portfolio. "By focusing on the tablet market, we see an opportunity to free where the smartphone can go. When we have multi-core processors across the board, they'll all be running the PlayBook platform," Lazaridis said. Lazaridis didn't confirm exactly when multi-core processors would power RIM's smartphones across the board. The BlackBerry PlayBook is a 7-inch tablet that's expected to launch in Q1 2011 for under $500.

Orange launches Orange Partner Connect for developers

Today at the LeWeb event in Paris, Orange launched its Orange Partner Connect program, which will allow Android, BlackBerry, and Java developers to get their apps into the Orange App Shop in all of Orange's worldwide markets from one central portal. Consumers will also benefit from direct carrier billing.

Google partners with Verizon Wireless for Chrome OS netbook connectivity

Today Google announced that it has teamed up with Verizon Wireless to offer data connectivity on its upcoming Chrome OS powered netbook computers. During a Chrome conference demo today, Google said that Verizon will provide each netbook with 100MB of free data every month for 2 years. The Chrome OS netbooks will not require a contract, and data plans start at $9.99. There are also no activation, overage, or cancellation fees. Google did not go into detail about when the netbooks would launch, who makes them, or how much they would cost, but it did confirm that all Chrome netbooks will have data connections.

Amazon announces Kindle for Web

Today Amazon announced its Kindle for the Web website, which will compete directly with Google's eBookstore. Kindle for the Web will allow you to read your purchased e-books online directly in your browser. It also allows you to share book samples with friends via email or a social network, embed a book sample in your blog, and more. If you have purchased books for your Amazon Kindle, or for your mobile devices, those titles should also be available for reading in your browser. During Google's Chrome web store introduction today, Amazon demoed the product, which will be available in Chrome's web store, and said it will be available early next year.

LG Optimus U Android smartphone headed to U.S. Cellular

Today U.S. Cellular announced that it will offer the LG Optimus U on December 13. The Optimus U, U.S. Cellular's sixth Android device this year, is similar to the Optimus T on T-Mobile and the Optimus S on Sprint. It runs Android 2.2 Froyo and offers a 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen display. U.S. Cellular will bundle it with a 2GB microSD card and that can be expanded to 32GB. The Optimus U will be free with a new contract and after an $80 mail-in rebate.

Samsung 4G LTE personal hotspot device passes FCC

A new Samsung device that's described as a "portable wireless router with WLAN" has passed through the FCC. According to Phone Scoop, the device should offer similar functionality to today's MiFi personal hotspot products, but with 4G LTE connectivity in tow. The portable wireless router supports CDMA 850/1900MHz and LTE 700MHz bands as well as Wi-Fi. That should do just fine on Verizon Wireless, although it has not been announced.

Visa intros contactless microSD mobile payment solution for smartphones

Today Visa announced that its contactless microSD mobile payment solution is now commercially available to Visa card issuers. The solution works with a number of popular smartphones, including the iPhone, and was made possible through a partnership with DeviceFidelity.

RIM now accepting BlackBerry PlayBook apps for App World store

Today RIM announced that it has opened the BlackBerry App World vendor portal to start accepting apps created by developers for the BlackBerry PlayBook. Developers who submit apps, and have their applications approved for distribution on BlackBerry App World before the launch of the PlayBook in North America, are eligible to receive a free PlayBook. In November, RIM confirmed that the BlackBerry PlayBook, its 7-inch tablet, will launch in the first quarter of 2011 and that it will cost under $500.

LG, VMware partner to merge work and play on enterprise smartphones

Last night Foursquare announced that it has issued an update for its Android application. Through its official Twitter account, Foursquare said the update is snappier, offers a new Trophy Case, and lots of polish. We installed the update and like the new visual improvements. It's available now in the Android Market.

Google shows off prototype Motorola Android Honeycomb tablet

Last night during the D: Dive Into Mobile Conference, Google's Andy Rubin took the stage and showed off some new features of Google Maps 5.0 using a prototype Android tablet. While the exact size and name of the device is unknown, it's said to be made by Motorola and apparently runs Android 3.0 "Honeycomb."
