1 million Samsung Galaxy Tabs sold globally Posted: 03 Dec 2010 05:30 AM PST Samsung has announced that it has sold over 1 million of its Galaxy Tab Android tablets globally. That figure is up from the 600,000 it reported sold as of November 22. Samsung first introduced the device in the United States on T-Mobile less than a month ago, on November 10. The Galaxy Tab is now available on five U.S. carriers including AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon Wireless, and U.S. Cellular. Samsung has upped its yearly sales predictions from 1 million units to 1.5 million Galaxy Tab units. Samsung may introduce a 10-inch version of the Galaxy Tab in mid-2011. Read the full story here. |
Motorola warns cell phone unit will post loss in Q1 Posted: 03 Dec 2010 05:21 AM PST Motorola has warned that its cell phone unit will post a loss during the first quarter of 2011, Reuters is reporting. Motorola's co-CEO Sanjay Jha said that Motorola's Q1 sales will include a greater number of cheaper phones on AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile, as opposed to the more expensive ones it has more recently sold on Verizon. Jha also hinted that it could face challenges against a Verizon Wireless iPhone. "We have an additional challenge potentially. At Verizon there is a competitive dynamic developing there that may have an impact," he said. Apple iPad now available subsidized from Three Posted: 03 Dec 2010 05:10 AM PST Three is now offering the iPad at subsidized prices. The 16GB Apple iPad costs GBP199 ($310), the 32GB is priced at GBP249 ($388), and you can buy the 64GB model for GBP349 ($544) with a minimum GBP25 ($39) monthly data contract. Best Buy kicks off free smartphone sale Posted: 03 Dec 2010 04:54 AM PST Best Buy announced that beginning today, and running through December, it will offer a minimum of four different smartphones for free with a new contract on their respective carrier. The deal will be available in all Best Buy big box stores, all 157 Best Buy Mobile specialty stores, and online at BestBuy.com/freesmartphones/. Best Buy wasn't specific on all of the phones that would be available for free this month, but it did give some examples and those include the HTC DROID Incredible, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, the LG Optimus S, and the LG Optimus T. FarmVille creator buys mobile game developer Newtoy Posted: 02 Dec 2010 12:14 PM PST Zynga has purchased the mobile game developer Newtoy, best known for its games such as "Words with Friends," and "Chess with Friends," two popular games that are available on the iPod touch, iPad, and iPhone which allow two players to game against one another. Newtoy will join Zynga as part of its "Zynga with Friends," studio where it will continue to work on games that connect people together. Zynga is best known for its FarmVille game, which first launched on Facebook and has since spread to the iPhone. Zynga has plans to launch titles on Android, too. Motorola CEO says 4G smartphones due in early 2011 Posted: 02 Dec 2010 11:37 AM PST Speaking during a Credit Suisse 2010 Technology Conference keynote yesterday, Motorola's co-CEO Sanjay Jha confirmed that his company will introduce 4G phones in early 2011. He wasn't specific on which network he would launch the phones on, but Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless all market 4G networks, and AT&T's is due to launch shortly. We suspect there will be multiple devices across various 4G networks. Jha also said Motorola will focus on high-end and mid-range smartphones as they have both sold better globally and in the United States. Motorola also has plans to release 10-inch and 7-inch tablets. Verizon confirms no-contract LTE pricing Posted: 02 Dec 2010 06:42 AM PST Today Verizon Wireless confirmed with PCMag's Sascha Segan that it will offer its 4G LTE products with a no-contract option. The new Pantech and LG 4G modems, for example, will retail for $249.99 without a contract instead of their subsidized $99 price. The 5GB and 10GB monthly data plans remain unchanged at $50 and $80 per month, respectively. Yesterday, Verizon Wireless announced that its 4G LTE network will light up on December 5 in 38 markets covering a total of 110 million people. It will first offer LTE modems, and said that it will discuss 4G phones during CES this year. Those are expected to land in mid-2011. Read the full story here. |

Clearwire trying to raise over $1.1 billion Posted: 02 Dec 2010 06:09 AM PST Today Clearwire announced its intentions to raise $1.1 billion through the offering of debt securities in private placement transactions. "Clearwire Communications is offering $175.0 million first-priority senior secured notes due 2015, $500 million of second-priority secured notes due 2017 and $500 million of exchangeable notes due 2040 and will grant the initial purchasers of the exchangeable notes an option to purchase up to an additional $100 million of exchangeable notes. Upon exchange, Clearwire Communications may deliver either shares of Class A Common Stock of Clearwire Corporation or cash," Clearwire said in a statement today. Read the full story here. |

Google: 83 percent of Android smartphones powered by Android 2.1 or newer Posted: 02 Dec 2010 05:37 AM PST According to Google's latest report on the spread of Android operating system versions, 83 percent of Android smartphones are now running Android 2.1 (39.6 percent) or Android 2.2 Froyo (43.4 percent). Just 6.3 percent of the phones in the survey were running Android 1., and 10.6 percent were powered by Android 1.6. Posted: 02 Dec 2010 05:27 AM PST Google has announced that its Google doodles, the cute drawings above the search space on desktop browsers, is now coming to mobile. I first noticed a doodle on Thanksgiving on my Android powered smartphone, and Google says the doodles will appear on Android 2.0+ devices and iOS 3+ devices. "In fact, almost all of the doodles we show on our desktop homepage will now have corresponding mobile versions on these phones," Google said.
