RIM buying UI firm TAT for BlackBerry OS design

Today Research in Motion announced that it is buying a mobile user interface design firm called The Astonishing Tribe (TAT). RIM says it will be bringing TAT's talent to its BlackBerry PlayBook and smartphone platforms. TAT's user interfaces are currently included in many consumer electronics and automotive products. RIM did not disclose the price of the purchase.

Gap using Apple iOS point-of-sale system in Old Navy

Apple is reportedly working with Gap to provide its Old Navy stores with iPod touch units for a new point-of-sale system trial run. The units, equipped with barcode scanners and credit card readers, could help eliminate lengthy lines this holiday season.

Nokia's Ovi Maps beta updated to version 3.6

Today Nokia announced that it has updated its Ovi Maps beta to version 3.6 The new version includes the ability to download street maps directly to your device. My Position and Search are now integrated together in the map interface. Nokia has also improved the behaviors of transit line settings in the toolbox, among other new features. Ovi Maps is available now from Nokia's Beta Labs website.

Official Google Reader Android app now available

Today Google released a standalone Google Reader application for Android devices. The application syncs with your Google Reader account and provides a list of all items, starred items, or RSS feeds listed in alphabetical order by website. It's also possible to share stories with others via email or through Google Reader. The application is available in the Android Market for free now.

T-Mobile 8GB Dell Venue Pro available for $99

Dell recently began selling its Venue Pro Windows Phone 7 smartphone for $149.99 with a new 2-year T-Mobile contract. However, that was for the 16GB version, and Dell recently emailed us detailing a lower priced 8GB version that's available with a T-Mobile contract for just $99.99. The 8GB Venue Pro is also available for $449.99 without a contract. The Venue Pro is available directly from Microsoft's online store, or from Dell.

LG outs VL600 USB modem for Verizon 4G LTE network

Today LG and Verizon Wireless officially announced the LG VL600, a USB modem capable of running on Verizon Wireless' new 4G LTE network, as well as its 3G network. The VL600 will be available on December 5 for $99.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate and with a new two-year service agreement.

Sprint's Samsung Epic 4G now $180 at RadioShack

RadioShack is now selling the Sprint Samsung Epic 4G for $180 for both new and upgrading Sprint customers. That's a $70 savings off of Sprint's standard $249.99 pricing for the phone. Verizon: 4G phones available by mid-2011

Today Verizon Wireless announced that it is launching its 4G LTE network on December 5 in 38 markets across the United States. While it will initially deploy two USB modems capable of running on that network, Verizon Wireless also announced that consumer-oriented phones capable of running on the network will be available by mid-2011. Verizon did not provide any further details on those devices, but we hope to see a glimpse of what's to come at CES this year.

Verizon launching 4G LTE on December 5, pricing detailed

Verizon Wireless just confirmed that it will launch its 4G LTE network in 38 markets across the United States on December 5. Verizon says that should cover a total of 110 million U.S. residents. It will also offer two USB devices capable of running on the 4G network, the LG VL600 and the Pantech UML290. Each will cost $99.99 after a $50 mail-in-rebate and with a new two-year agreement. The devices are also backwards compatible with Verizon's 3G network. Verizon's plans include a $50 monthly access plan for 5GB of data, or an $80 plan for 10GB of data with a $10/GB overage charge. Verizon plans to offer 4G LTE coverage across its entire network by the end of 2013.

Verizon's 4G LTE website live now, shows two 4G USB modems

Today Verizon Wireless launched its 4G LTE website minutes ahead of its teleconference, which begins at 12pm EST. The website confirms what we already know: that Verizon's 4G LTE network will be available in 38 markets and 60 airports across the United States, covering a total of 110 million people. But it does allow consumers to see if they'll have coverage in their neighborhoods. It also lists two USB modems that will take advantage of the network, the Pantech UML290 and the LG VVL600. JPMorgan issuing iPads to employees

JPMorgan is providing its investment bankers with Apple iPads as an "additional mobile tool", Bloomberg is reporting today. "We believe there are real benefits in our working environment that can be realized using this device - as well as the personal productivity and enjoyment that come as part of the package," JPMorgan partners said in an email. While some industry analysts speaking to Bloomberg view the move as a threat to RIM, the email doesn't specify that JPMorgan is replacing its employee's more portable BlackBerry devices with the tablet. RIM is set to debut its own tablet, the 7-inch BlackBerry PlayBook, early next year.

Archos updates its Android tablets to Android 2.2 Froyo

Archos has announced that it is updating its Android powered tablets, which include the Archos 28, 32, 43, 70, and 101 models, to Android 2.2 Froyo. The update provides a number of enhancements. In addition to the benefits of Android 2.2, the update includes more accurate battery charge readings, enhanced performance, the ability to install third party apps, and more. FCC to intro new net neutrality proposal

The Federal Communications Commission's Chairman, Julius Genachowski, is expected to introduce a new proposal for net neutrality rules. The proposal will prohibit internet providers from favoring or discriminating against traffic that flows over their networks.

Samsung intros near-field communications chip

Today Samsung announced a new near-field communications (NFC) chip that offers embedded flash memory. The chip allows for short range (up to 4 inches) communications between devices, such as smartphones. It could be used to enable phones to act as contactless mobile payment solutions, too. Imagine using your cell phone to pay for a bus fare, or a coffee, for example. The chip can also read RFID tags for on-the-spot data access. Samsung says its chip is the first to adopt flash for embedded flash memory, which makes it easier to upgrade the software or firmware of the NFC chip. The chip is scheduled for mass production during the first quarter of 2011.

doubleTwist recently updated its software with a new AirSync feature for Android devices which allows users to sync their music, video, and photo collections wirelessly. doubleTwist is a free desktop client available on both Mac and PC which, if you haven't used it before, closely resembles iTunes. It allows you to drag and drop your media onto various devices, including Android smartphones. The AirSync application is available in the Android Market for $0.99 for the first 10,000 customers and $4.99 thereafter.

MetroPCS deploys 4G LTE network in San Francisco

Today MetroPCS announced that it has activated its 4G LTE network in the San Francisco Metropolitan area. Unlimited services using the network start at $55 per month and MetroPCS offers the Samsung Craft, which is capable of running on the data network, for $299 after a $50 mail-in rebate. MetroPCS is now available in six metropolitan areas including Dallas-Fort Worth, Detroit, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia.

New Angry Birds Seasons game launches on Android

Today Rovio Mobile announced its latest Angry Birds game for Android called "Angry Birds Seasons." The game includes 25 "Season's Greedings," daily surprises as fans count down to Christmas. It also packs in the 45-level Halloween special edition which launched on iOS devices. This edition is packaged as a separate "Trick or Treat" episode. Angry Birds Seasons is available now in the Android Market and on Get Jar for free.
