HTC Hub for WP7 update offers live tile weather support

HTC has reportedly updated its HTC Hub Windows Phone 7 application with support for live tiles. The HTC Weather application should now offer support for a live tile on your homescreen, and it will provide up-to-date weather information. If you're using an HTC Windows Phone 7 device, such as the Surround, we suggest updating your HTC Hub from the Marketplace to take advantage of the new features.

MetroPCS activates 4G LTE network in NYC, Boston, San Francisco

Today MetroPCS announced that it has activated its 4G LTE network in three new markets: New York City, Boston, and San Francisco. MetroPCS currently only offers one phone that can take advantage of this network, the Samsung Craft, and that can be paired with its $55 4G data plans. MetroPCS now offers 4G LTE in 9 markets including Boston, Dallas-Fort Worth, Detroit, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, Sacramento, and San Francisco.

Facebook for Android updated with push notifications and chat support

Facebook recently updated its Android application with a few new features. The app now includes support for Facebook chat, which allows you to chat with friends that are also signed online. Facebook will now provide push-notifications for Android users. Facebook for Android version 1.5.0 is available now for free from the Android Market.

Apple, Google may compete for Nortel 4G patents

According to a letter sent to its investors, JPMorgan believes that Apple, Google, Motorola, RIM, and Nokia may soon be competing over more than 4,000 patents that are currently being auctioned off by Nortel. Apple and Google are reportedly already bidding on some of the patents.

Google Voice Search updated with voice recognition

Today Google announced that its Google Voice Search aplication for Android smartphones now supports voice recognition. You can opt-in to personalized recognition in the application's settings. Once activated, Google will start to activate a speech model for your voice to improve the application's accuracy over time. Voice recognition currently works in the United States for English speakers only. Google says it plans to support other languages and countries in the future. The app requires Android 2.2 or higher and the latest version of Voice Search is available in the Android Market now.

Broadcom intros BCM2157 dual-core processor for Android smartphones

Today Broadcom announced the BCM2157 dual-core baseband processor for Android smartphones. Broadcom says it will be used to deliver high-end smartphone features on affordable 3G Android devices. The BCM2157 features a 3G modem for 7.2Mbps HSDPA connectivity, compatibility with HVGA multitouch displays, support for a 5MP camera, and 3G dual SIM/dual standby support. It also offers dual-core ARM processors for simultaneous applications processing and dedicated modem support. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, and NFC solutions are all also supported. Broadcom says the BCM2157 is sampling now and is expected to launch commercially in Q1 2011.

CNBC Pro app launched for BlackBerry

Today RIM and CNBC announced the availability of CNBC Pro, an app that provides a wealth of information for investors. CNBC Pro offers real-time global market data from 100+ exchanges around the world, custom real-time price and news alerts, live CNBC TV programming and on-demand access to more than 200,000 clips, charts and analytics, and an automatic mobile/desktop sync feature. CNBC Pro costs $24.99 or $269.99 per year and it requires BlackBerry smartphones running OS 4.5 or newer. CNBC said PRO will launch on the iPhone, iPad, Android smartphones, and Nokia phones in early 2011.

Skyfire for Android updated

Skyfire has updated its third party Android browser with a few minor tweaks. For phones running Android 2.2 Froyo or Android 2.3 Gingerbread, the update will now allow you to save the application to your SD card. It also allows uploading from inside hte browser. Downloads from the browser will also now occur in the background so as not to interrupt your browsing session. The upadte, verison 3.0.1, is available in the Android Market now.

Google Nexus S smartphone available from all Best Buy stores at 8am December 16

Best Buy has written to inform us that all of its Best Buy and Best Buy Mobile specialty stores will have Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread powered Nexus S smartphones available beginning on December 16 at 8am EST. Exact inventory will vary by store, and customers will be able to purchase just two phones each. Best Buy has started special employee training for the device, and Nexus S users will have a dedicated helpline to ensure customers understand the device. The Nexus S will retail for $199 with a new T-Mobile 2-year contract, or for $529 without a contract.

Nokia to layoff 800 employees in Finland

Today Nokia announced that it is planning to cut 800 jobs in Finland. The cuts will begin in January, and Nokia is reportedly offering severance packages with 5-15 months of pay, according to Reuters. Some employees may also be relocated elsewhere.

Vodafone UK is now pushing out Google's Android 2.2.1 Froyo operating system for owners of its HTC Magic smartphone. The update includes the ability to save apps directly to SD cards, USB tethering, enhancements to Bluetooth, and enhancements to the camera. Amazon MP3 store launches for BlackBerry smartphones

Today RIM and Amazon.com announced that the Amazon MP3 store is now available for BlackBerry smartphones. Amazon MP3 allows users to browse for new songs, deals, top albums and artists, and more. RIM even integrated Amazon MP3 into its Universal Search and Media Library, so you can find songs without launching the app. Amazon MP3 also allows you to listen to 30-second samples of songs before you download them. Tracks can be downloaded over 3G or Wi-Fi networks. Amazon MP3 is available in beta now for BlackBerry users in the U.S. It can also be downloaded frmo the BlackBerry App World Test Center.
