Verizon outs FiOS iPad app

Today Verizon announced its FiOS application for the Apple iPad. The app allows you to interact and control your FiOS equipped television. That means you can change channels, manage your DVR, schedule television shows, or search for on-demand content. According to PCWorld, the app requires a FiOS router provided by Verizon, a DVR, and an HD set-top box. The application requires iOS 3.2 or later and is available now.

Fox: HP may announce three webOS PalmPad tablets at CES

Sources speaking to Fox News claim that HP and Palm are set to release three new tablets at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. The devices will run Palm's new webOS operating system, and will feature some high-end features such as HDMI-out and both front and rear facing cameras. A fourth device, reportedly still in the works, may not be announced but will later target university students.

Sprint extends iDEN partnership with Motorola, will add two iDEN handsets in Q1

Today Sprint announced that it has agreed to extend Motorola's support for its iDEN network for three more years. In conjunction with that announcement, Sprint also said it that it will launch two new Motorola iDEN push-to-talk handsets during the first quarter of 2011. One is the Motorola i866, a rugged phone with the "first ever" side-sliding QWERTY keyboard and corporate e-mail on an iDEN phone. Motorola will also replace the Motorola i680 with the i686. The i686 can be immersed in a meter of water for up to 30 minutes. Sprint did not provide images or further details, including pricing or exact release dates, for either device.

Sprint offering Sanyo Zio Android smartphone for free with contract

The Sanyo Zio, an Android smartphone, is now available from Sprint for free. The Zio sports a 3.5-inch touchscreen display with a WVGA resolution, a 3.2MP camera, and runs Android 2.1. The device is on sale through January 8, 2011 and Sprint will provide a $100 mail-in rebate for the Zio when it's purchased from Sprint.com, making the device free with a new 2-year contract.

Facebook for WP7 updated with Places, photo tagging

Facebook has updated the native Windows Phone 7 application with a couple of new features. Version 1.1 now includes the Places service, which allows you to check-in to various locations nearby. It also adds the ability to tag your friends in photos directly from the application. Unfortunately, Facebook for WP7 still lacks Live Tile support and a number of other features, including Facebook chat. According to WMPoweruser, the update is being pushed out now.

Google extends free Gmail voice call service through 2011

Google has announced that its Google Gmail voice calling application, which uses your Google Voice number to place phone calls over your internet connection, will offer free calls through 2011. Originally Google said it would only offer the service for free through the end of 2010. Gmail's calling feature is only available to U.S. Gmail users.

Apple yanks WikiLeaks iPhone app from iTunes app store

Apple has reportedly removed a WikiLeaks iPhone application from its iTunes App Store. The application became available on December 17 and was priced at $1.99. One dollar from every sale was donated directly to WikiLeaks and "organizations that work to promote the future of online." The WIkiLeaks application linked users to a copy of the WikiLeaks website which provided users with access to "the world's most documented leakage of top secret memos and other confidential government documents." The developer, Igor Barinov, is not directly associated with WikiLeaks, according to PCMag. Apple pulled the application yesterday.

Sprint activating 4G WiMAX in San Francisco on December 28

Sprint has confirmed that it will activate its 4G WiMAX network in San Francisco on December 28, according to CNET. Sprint currently offers its 4G WiMAX network in 70 markets and most recently activated the network in Denver, Colorado and Bridgeport, Connecticut.

Instagram iPhone app surpasses 1 million users

Instagram, the popular iPhone photo filter application that doubles as a photo-sharing social network, announced today that it now has more than 1 million users. Instagram users upload an average of three photos a second and there have been "tens of millions of photos" shared already. Instagram is a free application available in the iTunes App Store. Microsoft: 1.5 million WP7 devices sold to carriers in first six weeks

Today Microsoft announced some figures in regards to Windows Phone sales results, a number that it has held close to the vest until now. Achim Berg, Microsoft's vice president, mobile communications business and marketing group, said that manufacturers sold 1.5 million phones in the first six weeks to mobile operators and retailers. This figure, which met Microsoft's expectations, doesn't represent the number of phones that were sold to consumers, however, and that number is still unknown. Microsoft also said it currently has 18,000 developers creating apps for its marketplace and that there are currently more than 4,000 apps available. Berg said Microsoft is planning to release the first of "several updates," in the next couple of months.

Palm Pre 2 smartphone now available from Rogers Wireless

Palm has announced that the Pre 2, the successor to its Pre smartphone, is now available in Canada with Rogers Wireless. The Pre 2 offers Palm's latest webOS 2.0 operating system, and a 3.1-inch glass touchscreen display with a slide-out keyboard similar to the original Pre, but also sports a speedy 1GHz processor under its hood. The Pre 2 also offers a 5 megapixel camera with an LED flash and video recording, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, and a plethora of social networking features. Vonage Mobile Facebook app for iPhone and iPad updated

Vonage has updated its Vonage Mobile for Facebook application for iOS devices. Version 1.2 allows users to invite their friends directly from their Apple device via SMS or email. Users can also make free mobile calls to all Facebook friends who are also using the application. This feature works over Wi-Fi and 3G networks. The application will run on the Apple iPad, iPhone, and the iPod touch. It should be available now in the iTunes App Store now.

Wal-Mart selling iPhone 4 for $197, tosses in $50 gift card

Wal-Mart has started selling the iPhone 4 for $197 and with a $50 gift card. The offer is part of Wal-Mart's holiday sale which runs from Saturday, December 18 through Saturday, December 25.
