Google had plans to subsidize data for Android smartphones

According to slides presented during the Oracle v. Google trial today, Google had originally planned for subsidized data plans when it initially pitched Android devices to T-Mobile back in 2006. The subsidized data plans would have only cost the consumer $9.99 per month for unlimited data usage, which sounds like the stuff that dreams are made of today.

Klout, the dubious social network influence scoring service, has released its first mobile app for the iOS platform. Klout for iPhone lets Klout users instantly check their influence scores and get notifications for when they receive recommendations from other users.

T-Mobile gets FCC approval for breakup spectrum transfer from AT&T

T-Mobile USA has announced that the FCC has approved a transfer of spectrum from AT&T to T-Mobile as part of the breakup fee for the failed AT&T acquisition of T-Mobile.

Get up to $200 credit from T-Mobile's new cellphone trade-in program

T-Mobile has announced a new trade-in program whereby customers can bring in their old cell phones for credit towards new device. The carrier is guaranteeing $50 in credit for any working cellphone, but those with higher-end smartphones, such as an iPhone, can see up to $200 in credit. The program is available now through May 8, and the credits are issued to customers in the form of a rebate card. Customers must be eligible for and sign up for a new two-year contract when they purchase a new phone in order to qualify for the trade-in credit.

Nokia confirms magenta version of Lumia 900 will arrive at some point

Nokia's Lumia 900 is already available in black, cyan, and white color options, but the company has confirmed that a magenta version will also be available at some point in the future. Following various leaks of the magenta version by European retailers, Nokia confirmed to The Verge that the magenta Lumia 900 is indeed real. The company did not say when it would be available or what markets would get the magenta option, but it seems to be a lock for the Finnish market for now. The new color option for the Lumia 900 doesn't come as too much of a surprise, as the Lumia 800 has been available in all four color options for some time now.

IPCom patent complaint against Nokia overturned by EU

The European Patent Office has invalidated a claim against Nokia that was awarded to IPCom last year. The patent claim related to 3G technologies used in the defunct N96 smartphone, which has been off of the market since 2009. "We are pleased that the European Patent Office has confirmed that this IPCom patent is invalid," said Nokia on the matter. "So far, of 62 IPCom patents that have come to judgment, none has been found valid as granted. IPCom needs to recognize its position and end its unrealistic demands for what remains of this significantly diminished portfolio." IPCom recently won another ruling against Nokia in Germany, but that too relates to devices that Nokia no longer produces, so no injunction came as a result of the ruling.

HTC One S smartphone now available from T-Mobile

HTC's first One-series smartphone for the U.S., the One S, is now available for purchase from T-Mobile. The One S features a 4.3-inch, qHD Super AMOLED display and is powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor. It runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and has HTC's new Sense 4.0 interface. The One S is also HTC's thinnest smartphone ever, at a mere 7.95mm thick. Buyers can pick one up from T-Mobile stores or online for $199.99 with a new two-year contract. Microsoft changes Marketplace app access, encourages users to upgrade to Windows Phone 7.5

Microsoft has announced a few changes to the way Windows Phone users will be able to browse and install apps from the Windows Phone Marketplace, and it looks like those that are still holding on to Windows Phone 7 devices will need to upgrade to Windows Phone 7.5 in order to use the Marketplace going forward.

Apple to host 2012 WWDC June 11-15 in San Francisco

Apple has announced the dates of its 2012 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). The company will host WWDC on June 11 through June 15 of this year at the Moscone West convention center in San Francisco. WWDC is typically when Apple announces new features for the iOS platform, though it has used the conference to launch new devices in the past, as well.

LG Mobile sees more profit, better smartphone performance in Q1 2012

LG's mobile division appears to be continuing its trend of actually turning a profit that it started last quarter, as the company's Q1 2012 financial results show an even greater profit than it saw in Q4 2011.

Sprint to bring 4G WiMAX services to Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile prepaid brands

During a conference call for investors this morning, Sprint CEO Dan Hesse announced that the carrier would bring 4G WiMAX services to its Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile prepaid brands later this year. Hesse said that more information would be revealed as the carrier gets closer to launching the 4G service on the prepaid brands. No new devices have been revealed as of yet.

Sprint adds 1.1 million subs in Q1 2012, still loses $863 million

Sprint has released its Q1 2012 financial report, and while it was able to move a lot of iPhones and saw subscriber additions in each category, the company still posted a loss for the quarter.
