Samsung Galaxy S II Android 4.0 ICS update now available from Vodafone UK

According to Vodafone UK, owners of the Samsung Galaxy S II smartphone should be able to update their handsets to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich starting today. The update is available to install through Samsung's KIES desktop software now, and an over-the-air rollout is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, April 17. O2 and Three UK have already released the update for their users, but those on T-Mobile and Orange are still waiting for it to arrive. Samsung has said that it is waiting for all of the carriers to approve the update before it makes it available to unlocked handsets in the UK.

Apple, RIM hit with lawsuit over touchscreen patents

Apple and RIM are facing a new lawsuit from the creatively-named patent holding company Touchscreen Gestures. Touchscreen Gestures claims that the smartphone makers have infringed upon its patents covering scrolling, dragging on-screen objects, double-tapping, and selecting on-screen objects. The patents were originally issued in 2007 and 2008 to a Taiwanese company that produced touchpads for laptops, and were since transferred to Touchscreen Gestures. The lawsuit names the iPhone, iPad, and BlackBerry PlayBook as infringing. Touchscreen Gestures also has a similar lawsuit against Samsung. The suit against Apple and RIM was filed in the United States District Court in the Eastern District of Texas.

Nokia outs Belle FP1 update for 701, 700, 603 smartphones

Nokia has begun rolling out the Belle Feature Pack 1 update to three of its Symbian smartphones. The Nokia 701, 700, and 603 will all get the update over-the-air in the coming days. The update bumps the clock speed of the processor in all three phones from 1GHz to 1.3GHz, adds new homescreen widgets, adds a new browser, improves the notification bar, improves multitasking, and adds Dolby Digital Plus functionality to media playback. Users should get a notification on their handsets when the update is ready to be downloaded and installed.

LG Viper 4G LTE smartphone hits Sprint on April 22, pre-orders start today

Sprint has announced that the LG Viper 4G LTE, one of the carrier's first 4G LTE smartphones, will hit shelves on April 22. The Viper 4G LTE runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread and features a 4-inch WVGA NOVA display and a 1.2GHz dual-core processor. It also has built-in NFC features and will support Google Wallet out of the box. Sprint will sell the Viper 4G LTE for $99.99 with a new two-year contract. Customers are able to place pre-orders for the new smartphone online at www.sprint.com/viper starting today. Sprint says that those that pre-order the Viper 4G LTE will begin receiving it on Friday, April 20, two days before it will be available in stores.

Google Goggles for Android updated with speed improvements, better continuous mode

Google Goggles, the company's barcode/image/object scanning app for Android smartphones, has been updated to version 1.8. The new version of Goggles offers barcode recognition that is twice as fast as older editions, and it is now possible to save recognized objects from the continuous scanning mode to the search history. Unfortunately, the new version doesn't make it any easier to say "Google Goggles" ten times fast. Google Goggles for Android is free and can be downloaded from the Google Play Store now.
