Google Currents updated with background syncing, international availability Posted: 11 Apr 2012 11:58 AM PDT Google has updated Currents, its Flipboard competitor for Android and iOS, to version 1.1, adding performance enhancements and availability for users across the world. The new version features baked-in support for Google Translate, and can translate content to one of 38 languages. It also features background syncing of articles, as well as offline storage. Netflix for Windows Phone sees version 2.0 update, expanded availability Posted: 11 Apr 2012 11:30 AM PDT Netflix has released an update to its app for Windows Phone smartphones that quashes some bugs, improves performance, and offers expanded availability to more countries. Version 2.0 of Netflix for Windows Phone can be downloaded in 47 countries in Latin America, as well as in the UK and Ireland. The updated app now supports subtitles, closed captions, and an alternate audio option. Netflix 2.0 for Windows Phone requires Windows Phone 7.5 Mango or higher, and can be downloaded for free from the Windows Phone Marketplace now. Read the full story here. |

Verizon to release maintenance update for HTC Rhyme smartphone soon Posted: 11 Apr 2012 08:32 AM PDT Though it doesn't get the marketing attention of other smartphones, Verizon Wireless hasn't completely forgotten about the charm-laden HTC Rhyme. The carrier has just announced a software update for the Rhyme that will address a number of bugs and performance issues. No, it is not Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, but the update does offer things like a new five-bar signal indicator and a bunch of new features to the Rhyme's dock mode. T-Mobile hosting press event for HTC One S next week Posted: 11 Apr 2012 08:21 AM PDT T-Mobile announced long ago that it would be carrying the HTC One S smartphone, but it still hasn't revealed an official release date. That could be changing soon, however, as the carrier has sent out media invites to a press event scheduled for next week for the launch of the phone. Rumors have pegged an April 25 release date for the One S on T-Mobile, and that would fall exactly one week after the press event. We'll be there on April 18 to get proper hands-on with T-Mobile's version of the One S and hopefully learn the actual launch date, but in the meantime, be sure to check out our full review of the international version of the One S. Verizon to hit upgraders with $30 fee starting April 22 Posted: 11 Apr 2012 07:10 AM PDT Verizon Wireless has announced that starting April 22, any customer that is upgrading their current line of service and purchasing a new device at a discounted price will be subject to a $30 fee. The carrier says that the fee enables it to "continue to provide customers with the level of service and support they have come to expect which includes Wireless Workshops, online educational tools, and consultations with experts who provide advice and guidance on devices that are more sophisticated than ever." Other carriers, such as Sprint and AT&T, have charged upgrade fees of various amounts for some time already. Read the full story here. |

Instagram for Android updated with support for Tegra 3 smartphones Posted: 11 Apr 2012 06:15 AM PDT The updates to Instagram for Android are still coming fast and furious, and the latest build finally adds support for smartphones with the NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor. Which at this point basically means the HTC One X. Additionally, Instagram says that there are bug fixes for tablet users in the update, and issues with geo-tagging have been addressed. AT&T lights up 4G LTE service in Staten Island, St. Louis Posted: 11 Apr 2012 05:24 AM PDT AT&T is continuing its deployment of its new 4G LTE network today, as it has activated the faster data service in Staten Island, New York and St. Louis, Missouri. This follows the markets in Texas and Indiana that were activated on Monday of this week. AT&T claims that its 4G LTE network offers data speeds of up to 10 times that of 3G networks. The carrier offers multiple smartphones that can take advantage of it, including the new Nokia Lumia 900 and HTC Titan II Windows Phone smartphones. Read the full story here. |
