Nokia Lumia 900 software update now available for AT&T users

The promised software update for the Nokia Lumia 900 that addresses a network connectivity problem with AT&T is now available for users to download and install. Nokia had originally promised that the update would be available April 16, but the company has made the update available a full three days earlier than scheduled. Users will have to use the Zune software on a PC or the Windows Phone 7 Connector software on a Mac to install the update. Nokia also notes that the previously announced $100 bill credit for AT&T users is still availabel through April 21.

Sony starts upgrading Xperia smartphones to Android 4.0 ICS

Sony has announced the roll-out of the promised Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade for its like of 2011 Xperia smartphones. Owners of the Xperia arc S, Xperia neo V, and Xperia ray in Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, Finland, and Norway will see the update first, with the roll-out occurring over the next four to six weeks. Other regions will get the upgrade following that, and the Xperia arc, Xperia PLAY, Xperia neo, Xperia mini, Xperia mini pro, Xperia pro, Xperia active, and Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman are due to be upgraded in late May/early June. Users will get a notification on their handsets when the upgrade is ready to be downloaded and installed, and they will have to then use their PC or Mac and Sony's software to complete the installation.

Ting to use Sprint's 4G LTE network when it launches

Ting, an MVNO launched earlier this year that uses Sprint's 3G CDMA and 4G WiMAX networks, has announced plans to offer services on Sprint's forth-coming 4G LTE network when it is available later this year. Ting executive Ken Schafer says that "We have several LTE devices including data sticks, mobile hotspots and some pretty spiffy smartphones in-bound to coincide with the launch of the LTE network." Ting differentiates itself from other carriers by not charging overage fees, but instead bumping users up into higher tier plans should they go over their allotted usage. The carrier also will credit users for leftover minutes if they don't make full use of their plan in a given month.

Samsung Galaxy Y entry-level smartphone now available from Three UK

Samsung's Galaxy Y smartphone, an entry-level Android 2.3 Gingerbread device, is now available from Three UK. The Galaxy Y has a 3-inch, QVGA (320 x 240 pixel) display, is powered by an 832MHz processor, and features a 2 megapixel camera. Three UK is offering it for 79.99 GBP on a pay-as-you-go plan.

Samsung launches ChatON messaging app for BlackBerry smartphones

Following the launch of ChatON for Bada, Android, and iOS, Samsung is now bringing its cross-platform messaging service to BlackBerry smartphones. ChatON for BlackBerry lets users send text, images, and video clips to other ChatON users regardless of which platform they are on. Samsung has also committed to launching a version of the app for Windows Phone, but it has not indicated as to when it plans to do so. ChatON for BlackBerry is free and available in the BlackBerry App World now.

Sprint plans to switch 800MHz spectrum to LTE by 2014

According to a report from Fierce Wireless, Sprint plans to convert its 800MHz spectrum from iDEN to 4G LTE services by 2014. Sprint has already received 3GPP certification to use its 800MHz spectrum for LTE, but it is still awaiting approval from the Federal Communications Commission. Sprint currently uses its 800MHz spectrum for iDEN push-to-talk users, which it is migrating over to its newer, CDMA-based push-to-talk service. The carrier says that its deployment of LTE on 800MHz depends on how quickly it can migrate iDEN customers to other services. Sprint will initially launch 4G LTE service on its 1900MHz spectrum in a handful of markets by the middle of this year.

Apple responds to DoJ e-book lawsuit, says it broke Amazon's "monopolistic grip"

Apple has responded to the U.S. Department of Justice's lawsuit against the company over alleged e-book price fixing in the iTunes Store. Apple says that the accusations are false and that it actually helped the industry by "breaking Amazon's monopolistic grip on the publishing industry."

Verizon stretches 4G LTE coverage in nine markets

Verizon Wireless has announced the expansion of its 4G LTE network in nine markets. Bakersfield, Fresno, Modesto, Monterey, Sacramento, Salinas, and San Francisco Bay area, Calif.; and Reno, Nev. will all see expanded 4G LTE coverage in the upcoming weeks. Additionally, Verizon announced the launch of 4G LTE service in Salisbury, Md., starting April 19.

Google+ for Android gains web snippet sharing, hashtag support

Google has released an update to its Google+ app for Android devices that adds smart website snipping when sharing websites from the browser. Now, when you share a website to Google+ using Android's native share function, the headline and a preview of the link are added to the post, much in the way sharing links in the desktop version of Google+ works. Additionally, the mobile app now supports hashtags in the stream, and Google says there are various performance enhancements and bug fixes included in the update. Google+ for Android is free and available in the Google Play Store now.

HTC One V smartphone now available for pre-order in the UK

HTC has already launched the higher-end One X and One S smartphones in the UK, but now it is time for the low-end One V to make a splash. The One V is now available for pre-order from UK retailer Carphone Warehouse, with delivery expected for the week of April 23. Buyers can get the One V on O2, Orange, and Vodafone, and it is available for free with a 20.50 GBP per month two-year contract.
