Google Play store gains 600 MGM movie titles for Android users

Looking for more variety in movies on your Android devices? Well Google just inked a deal with movie powerhouse MGM to bring more titles to your touchscreens. For starters, 600 new titles will be made available for rental with more on the way. Google Play is the renamed Android Market from Google that offers apps, songs, books, and movies to Android users.

ASUS has announced that its Transformer Pad 300 10-inch tablet will land stateside on April 22. The Pad 300 is a relative to the popular EE Pad Transformer tablet and offers the ability to "transform" the tablet into a laptop with an optional keyboard dock.

European regulators launch investigation into mobile payment joint venture

The European Commission has launched an investigation into the mobile payment joint venture started by Everything Everywhere, Vodafone, and O2. The joint venture plans to offer NFC-based mobile payment systems throughout Europe and was originally announced last June.

Twitter now lets advertisers target BlackBerry users with Promoted Tweets

Twitter has expanded its targeted advertising program with the ability for advertisers to target BlackBerry users. Advertisers on Twitter have been able to target Android and iOS users since last month, but now they can specifically send ads to the official Twitter app for BlackBerry smartphones. Twitter says that the targeted Promoted Tweets will appear at the top of timelines for users that follow a brand or have similar interests to a brand that is advertising with Twitter. Users will have the ability to dismiss the promoted tweets if they wish.

Google Galaxy Nexus 4G LTE smartphone hits Sprint on April 22

Sprint has finally announced the availability of the Google Galaxy Nexus smartphone that it first announced back at CES earlier this year. The carrier will offer the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich handset for $199.99 on April 22, with pre-orders starting today. Sprint's version of the Galaxy Nexus is nearly identical to the version offered by Verizon Wireless, but it officially supports the Google Wallet mobile payment service, whereas Verizon's Galaxy Nexus does not. The Galaxy Nexus will utilize Sprint's 4G LTE network that is due to go live in six markets by the middle of this year. Sprint will offer the phone in stores and online on its launch day, but anxious customers can place a pre-order now at www.sprint.com/nexus.

Apple's new iPad arrives in 12 more countries this Friday

Apple has revealed that its new iPad tablet will be available for purchase in 12 additional countries starting this Friday, April 20. Customers in Brunei, Croatia, Cyprus, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Malaysia, Panama, South Korea, St Maarten, Uruguay, and Venezuela will all be able to purchase the tablet on that date. On Friday, April 27, the new iPad will also be available in Colombia, Estonia, India, Israel, Latvia, Lithuania, Montenegro, South Africa, and Thailand.

Google, Oracle patent trial set to begin today

Since negotiations between Oracle and Google have fallen through, the next step in the patent battle between the two companies is to go trial, which is set to begin today. Oracle is accusing Google of infringing upon Oracle's patents covering Java technology with the Android operating system, and is looking for about $1 billion in copyright damages. Google argues that Android does not infringe upon Oracle's patents and that Oracle can't even copyright certain parts of the Java programming language. The trial will focus on two specific patents and is due to last eight weeks.

Samsung expected to launch Galaxy S III smartphone on May 3

This morning, Samsung sent out notices to the media inviting them to "meet the next Galaxy" at an event in London on May 3. Samsung is expected to launch the "Galaxy S III," the long-awaited successor to the wildly popular Galaxy S II line, at this event. Adding intrigue to the matter is Samsung's chosen date, May 3, or 5/3 when written in the U.S., which some have read to represent "S 3." Either way, we should find out for sure around 7 p.m. BST/2 p.m. EST on that date.
